No Man's Sky a science-fiction game set in an infinite procedurally generated galaxy, is available to pre-order now — DRM-free on GOG.com

Intergalactic travel changes the notion of time. Unimaginable speeds connect impossibly distant worlds, dilating lifetimes, blending generations. A round-trip may find your world aged and unrecognizable, separated from your loved ones, irrevocably alien. In an intergalactic society, only the few set off towards the stars — explorers, those unafraid and with nothing to lose. They set off never to come back as far as our lifetimes are concerned. And thus, we still look up at an infinite sky, now within our reach, yet still untouched — a no man's land, a No Man's Sky.

No Man's Sky promises discovery of an infinite, uncharted universe. Its billions of stars, planets, unknown living creatures, breathtaking sights and lonely wastelands — all seamlessly connected — populated with explorers drawn to the distant mysteries of the horizon, eager to leave a permanent mark in their wake.
The frontier is merciless and dangerous. Exposed to a universe of extremities in your fragile suit and ship, you'll need resources and upgrades to get far — as well as the means stand your ground in fight.
Whether you journey to the center of it all or seek out the farthest reaches of existence, the trip will not be simple or dull. You'll catalogue things unseen, discover alien artifacts and reveal mysteries of the universe. If you survive.

The pre-order incentive for No Man's Sky includes the Horizon Omega ship — faster engines, better guns, all to kickstart your trip and help you survive longer on the interstellar journey.

Reach out and touch the No Man's Sky, available for pre-orders now, DRM-free on GOG.com! The game is scheduled to be released on June 21st in North America, June 22nd in Europe and Australia, and June 24th in the UK and Rest of World.

Magmarock: It has single player. Says it right there.
avatar
Tallima: It does, but the MP component has been advertised pretty big.

From the game page:
Share your journey - The galaxy is a living, breathing place. Trade convoys travel between stars, factions vie for territory, pirates hunt the unwary, and the police are ever watching. Every other player lives in the same galaxy, and you can choose to share your discoveries with them on a map that spans known space. Perhaps you will see the results of their actions as well as your own...

I don't know exactly what that means. But I thought you'd be able to fly with and against others.
Maybe you can who knows. Most of the adds I've been seeing are from youtube, but there will most defiantly be a single player. I think this is good thing, because turning this into another MMO thing will just ad to a list of boring MMO's that go nowhere.

SirPrimalform: Surely there's only a region-free price if it doesn't have regional pricing? If one territory is paying more than another, then by definition it has at least two regions...
Well, you could call it the base price out of which all the rest of the regions derive.
avatar
SirPrimalform: I think I get what you're saying though. You mean the 'base' (US) price?
More or less.
I really want to get this game, but the pre order incentive is complete bogus. A pre order discount is really the only good incentive I've seen. By giving me a better ship that messes up the balance of the game. I want to know what it feels like to start with game with next to nothing and build a better ship as I go. The pre order bonus just messes that up.
This is BRILLIANT news that you managed to convince a studio to release their first big 60$ blockbuster title DRM-free! I would immediately support this decision IF the developer had explained how their online/offline thing would work.
Can I enjoy all features offline (minus the shared discovery database obviously)?
I rarely ever spend more than $20 for a game these days (thanks to GoG), but this is the one game I would consider spending full retail price on. I love the adventure hiking gameplay, like Morrowind Overhaul, so this is up my alley. It's a good way of stress reduction for me.

The preorder bonus definitely doesn't seem compelling.

Konrad: Yup, the DRM-free release is going to feature the full set of online features and all, but you'll also be able to play it offline. :)

Doesn't really make it clear. :P

neurasthenya: - Price is completely fine. Watch this.
The price is high enough that I wouldn't be willing to consider a game at that price unless it is exactly my favorite type of game. Basically, unless the game is a gameplay-focused turn-based RPG, I am not willing to spend this kind of money.

By pricing the game this high, it causes many people who might be interested in trying a game, but for whom it isn't their favorite type of game, to be priced out of buying it.

There are other issues, like the fact that the game is Windows only (so it would be a gamble if it works in WINE; if it doesn't, I'm out $60), the fact that it requires 8GB of RAM (so no playing it on a cheap laptop), and has only a Nvidia graphics card listed (say goodbye to playing this game on a system with integrated graphics).

In other words, the game's price and system requirements make it a non-option for anyone who isn't a serious gamer and who already likes that specific type of game.

Edit: Another thing: I have never heard of the company that made this game, so I have no idea whether this developer is a good developer, or whether it tends to put out buggy games, or games that are incomplete or have serious design flaws.

Exactly.

As I've said in this thread, it should be perfectly optimized and have the maximum of compatibility for this price.
Of course I still wouldn't buy it because of the arbitrary massive regional pricing.
No, I don't earn more than Americans, not even more than average Russians and certainly not 5 times as much.
This nationalistic discrimination shouldn't be supported.

I was pretty hyped when I saw the trailer for the first time.
The hype is now completely destroyed.

Preorder for Super Duper Mega Better Ship?

I don't know what this dumb game is, but I know this much:
This incentive has no soul. -> The makers have no soul. -> The game has no soul.
Well not fond of the regional pricing or the staggered release date or the preorder incentive ugh .......but the game looks interesting and I'm trying to keep an open mind.
Definitely not going to preorder but will check it out when it's released and the Reviews come in.

Question though maybe I'm just blind but for the offline mode I basically would never need to connect to the Internet right ?(Well except for downloading :P) The net seems a bit ambigious about this.

Nice to see this on GOG. I'm impressed (and surprised) that the dev has this much faith in the PC gaming community, to release it DRM free... although I strongly suspect only one outcome as a result of this decision sadly. Very possible that the servers would be able to contain the "less legit" versions that are inevitably going to be in abundance. I do think that they should have gone with a lower price, especially after the backlash that The Witness got over pricing. This is going to be a hard-sell to anyone who wasn't already waiting for this... I think it has a definite niche audience... of which I am definitely one of.

I'd like to get this on the PC, but my PS4 is connected to a 95" HD projector, Marantz AV Receiver and some big Kef 5.1 speakers in my living room, and I suspect this game will be glorious on that. I definitely see this as a chill-out game and relaxing on my sofa fits the bill. It'll cost me £10 more for that experience, but it does get me a physical disc-in-a-box too... and that's important for me personally.

The game has great ambitions and it sounds like my ideal game, I just hope they've managed to pull it off... looking forward to the 24th June, will be watching my letter box very closely.
i like the idea. lonely travelling and exploring gameworld(s) is introvert aproach to gaming i tend to.
on the other hand, the animals look like combinations of our planet's fauna - head from a sea horse, body from brontosaurus and so on. not much fantasy of considerably different conditions and elements of chance of evolutions on the distant worlds.

why i nitpick? so, price... higher than for example witcher 3 have ever been.

for such price it should be really very very unrepetitive.. is it likely to?

i dont know. but i consider interesting my need to speak up about this game although i play only old games and even dont own modern pc usable for such new games so far..
well i saw the game, its 3d but the graphics look wonderfull....
about the list price 60 bucks ? wow thats expensive, there are many expensive games but usually these are welknown games or at least made by welknown companies and or developers.

Take Farcry thats a known title that is also 55 or 60 bucks, still expensive but somehow the price seems less expensive because the game is known.

But to ask 60 euros for a game unknown and the company doesnt ring a bell aswell, seems like a unknown company .
I been buying games retail since my 12 (thats almost 40 years) and back then with microsoft games and atari games the prices were some how 'okay' because these guys been around so long, but nowaday the prices are so high
for games that still have to prove they are good, and the company also has to prove they deliver good games.

So if devs make their first game why not start with lower prices? if you cant swim and still have to learn it you dont jump in the deep on your first lesson ? :D
Anyway, it is much easier to buy a game developed by welknowm companies and or devs, ofcourse this does not and will never guarantee the game will be good, but it is much more of an assurance that chances will be very high you will get a decent or excellent product.

The animals are procedurally generated like everything in this game. The devs have stated a few times that everyone starts near the edge of the galaxy and here the animals are more earth like... as you move closer to the center they become more exotic and strange.

They've also stated that in most media they've been trying to not show anything that people wouldn't understand so again... more earth like creatures so as not to confuse people. I don't agree with it, but there it is.

I don't think you'll have anything to worry about when searching for odd creatures.

They're a known dev and this is their third game, but admittedly they're better known on consoles and this is a departure from their first two games.
