I love the retro-pixel style graphics of this game. I know some people don't, judging by some of the posts in this thread--everyone has their personal preferences, which is fine--but I love this game's style, and the gameplay looks fun too (hope it works well with a controller)! I'll be picking up this title sometime in the near future.
Graphics are never a concern for me in evaluating video games. Gameplay and story are by far the most important things for me. It also helps to have a good sound track. In the looks department, as long as the interface and visuals are polished, I don't care if it looks like it was made in 1987 or now. However, I just want to say that using the term "immersive" to describe a game that is as pixellated as this one is a bit odd. I've never played it, and will probably buy it and play it at some point, but I unless the story is so incredibly captivating (like Planescape Torment), a super pixellated top-down action RPG is not likely to be immersive in my book. I hope I'm wrong.

astroclay: I know it's unlikely, but does anyone know if Hyper Light Drifter will include the soundtrack as an extra freebie?
The OST was included with the $40 or higher plegdes during the Kickstarter while also being available as a $5 addon, so GOG can't really sell the OST any cheaper here without a backlash for the devs.

gamesfreak64: It has its own charm i guess.
i myself dont fancy these games, i am not that happy with all those games that are to blocky.
With blocky (dos) games you can run it in a smaller dos box windows this way i looks a little better.
Sometime if its to blocky i just run it in a small window, this way it looks better.

Crosmando: Graphics are pretty low on my list of priorities, but when the graphics actually obscure your vision and make it difficult to play the game I draw the line.
well , graphics can play a fair part in games.
i cant play 3d games, fpp games and games with too much lighing and lightning effects so i have to avoid these games.
Also games that tend to be rotating around (like most new games seem to be doing) pineapple game is one of these , i watched some videos and it was to much motion for me.
So ebcause of my (game)motion sickness and photosensitivity i have to be very strict and carefull in the games i can play and thus can buy.
plus side is that i wont loose much cash spending games, downside is also that my collection is at least 50% smaller then other ones collections because i cant just play every game.
So usually on every 50 games that arrive i will be able to buy 5 or maybe 7 games at most, cause most popular and released games are fpp. 3d, or have to many motions (turning around 360 degrees maps, zooming in and out , weather effects and so on)
Good thing hoewever is the fact that old lcikc and point style games are still being made, i have all old wadjet eye games, i have the old zak mckrakken, old moneky island and every old school game without the 3d, fpp and rotating stuff.
I have annas quest , thats a nice adventure, i have edna and harvey (2 games) and shardlight seems to be playable for me as far as i have seen the preview videos.
But i do want to buy more games, but they do have to be available, so thats why i turned to the casual games 7 years ago cause these have 1000s of games i like and can play thus will buy.
i have 400 tot 500 casual games drm free retail cd/dvd. plus 100 or so digital (drm free).
Anyway with luck 1 of 10 releases is a game i can buy, from the last 40 releases i bought 3 new games.

Well that's certainly disappointing, albeit not unexpected. These days artists tend to retain the rights to sell their music on their personal websites.

While I can live without the soundtrack, I sure miss the good old days when games were packaged with free goodies.
Saw the Overlord play this on Geek & Sundry Twitch last year. Looked lots of fun, although difficult battles. I'm sold. :)

'immersive' is subjective... I personally become more 'immersed' (i.e absorbed, sucked into, playing from dusk til dawn while the time flys by etc) by simpler/8-16bit/retro etcetc graphics... for what ever reasons *shrugs* Secret of Mana2 (the one not released outside Japan) is gorgeous

e- so in your case 'immersive' sounds like itll require lengthy, well written dialogue/lore to absorb into...

People always suggest PlanscapeT as a point of reference... Yes, it was bloody well written but 'magical' as it just clicked and even the devs involved with that title fall flat on their faces nowadays tehehehe.

Sometimes less is more.

This looks interesting though... one things a disliked about secret of Mana series was the combat became bland quickly and was kinda slow. plus had no side quests to indulge into (it played like FF, main story unfolds). I would like to see more combat orientated trailers and will probs pick up in a 25-50% sale if it seems itll provide me satisfaction. Though the game world looks abosrbing (even if a lil too simple...) but would also like more info on RPG elemts such as side - fetch quests/conversing with locals etcetc, sure fetch quests suck in the millions but fleshing out each town/village can go a long way if implementd thoughtfully...

It[this game] has cats too.

e- or its a jackel/hyena... i saw a kitty, becuz the main character has kitty ears on his hat :/

Niggles: Anyone who backed this during the KS know whether we have option of receiving a GOG key on release?
avatar
expopower: In their latest Kickstarter update, they mentioned:

"We'll be sending out the remaining surveys this month, so please be on the look out. This means you get to select your platform(s) and provide us relevant info on your tier and rewards."

So perhaps we'll have the chance to choose that option in the near future?
Surveys just went out. DRM free is only option. Nothing about GOG. Oddly nothing about Steam either.
No idea how the game will be supplied to KS backers :(

Yes, jerk. Oh, well. How about no. I'd suggest you may be the jerk for even responding. And not even comprehending the entire post.

You seem to feel you can tell me what to do so I say unto you: At least register the entire comment before posting. I sense you are looking for a flame war. The other responders to this section choose the right thing to do and to just ignore.

Its a long story as to why I responded in such a way, I shant bore you with it. You could have taken note of the edit I added and shrugged it off. This could just go round in cirlces so lets leave it at that, yes? It seems we both succumbed to impulse posts. *shrugs* tis the way of the internet at times. read a post, respond to half of it or a singular word from it etc.

I may check the link out sometime. I was more interested in this game though...

Asked dev about gogkeys for backers :

"Hi Alex
Happy for the release of the game.
However id like to you ask you this. Can backers have a choice of getting a GOGkey instead of a Steam key or humble drm free?. Understand Humble is the chosen distributor however there is a good number of people who would prefer to have this game via gog.com platform (which the game is now available on). Other Kickstarted games have provided this option, can you?."

Response i got :

"Heart Machine

I'm sorry, no, we cannot distribute keys through GOG as an alternative to Humble Bundle; Humble Bundle is our distribution partner, and GOG was an add-on late in the process for other platforms. Thanks for your understanding!"

way to go customer service. not.
