Grim Fandango resurrected.

Grim Fandango Remastered marks the return of gaming's most recognisable, and notoriously unavailable, cult classic - now on Windows, Mac, and Linux. This upcoming release got everybody so excited, Tim Schafer even prepared a special trailer all about how you can pre-order Grim Fandango Remastered (and why that’s a fine idea) right now, exclusively on GOG.com for the first week!

Grim Fandango is by far the single most wishlisted game by the GOG.com community with an overwhelming 45,000 votes. It's a unique blend of Mexican folklore with film noir stylings, and has been critically praised for its art direction, writing, and memorable characters.

Grim Fandango Remastered refreshes, refines, and remasters the award winning title and Tim Schafer's last hurrah as LucasArts' adventure-gaming-extraordinaire. The remaster modernizes the game's presentation and gameplay with completely repainted textures, widescreen support, and quite possibly best of all: modern controls. You can now say goodbye to unwieldy tank controls, a staple of the early 3D era, and enjoy a fully point-and-click interface - but only if you want! The option to play the game as originally envisioned is always there.

Have you missed Grim Fandango the first time around? Now's your chance to experience gaming history like never before, or if you have played it in its heyday - you're probably long overdue for another go anyway. You can pre-order Grim Fandango Remastered right now on GOG.com!
The pre-order will last until Tuesday, January 27, when the game is expected to launch on GOG.com.

It took a lot to bring this classic back to life. If you’d like to learn more about the remaster, Double Fine and 2 Player Productions have just released the newest episode of The Making of Grim Fandango Remastered - a recommended watch.

I'm cautiously excited about this, but will be waiting for user reviews before buying, partly because I'm a little suspicious whether GoG "gets" the subtle differences between versions of games (for example, their release of every version of TIE Fighter except the best one... still waiting for that 1995 version, guys) and is correctly listing ALL the differences between this and the original, and partly because the last "remastered" game I got (Gabriel Knight 20th Anniversary) was somewhat disappointing compared to the original. The screenshots look great, though, and I'm definitely not against updated graphics when that essentially amounts to a higher-resolution texture pack instead of redoing the art completely. I have high hopes, and it would be wonderful to play this classic again at long last.

Also, congrats to GoG for managing to score both LucasArts games AND Grim Fandango (formerly LucasArts, but not anymore) so close to one another! This is the sort of thing your customers have been dreaming about for years.

Kunovski: well, Schafer is an idiot who burnt money from one of the biggest kickstarter campaigns, so I'm really not sure we should feed him more money...

but I really want to play this game :/

dilemma...

deonast: Well if it helps you aren't just feeding him, you are feeding his employees who worked on this, and their families who they support.
well, I'm pretty sure he didn't spent those 3,3 million dollars all by himself... :)

TotalBiscuit has been officially against pre-orders in general for a year now and a lot of recent AAA disasters prove him right. His tweet was hinting at exactly that.

Basically this.

I believe his main gripe was the review embargo in conjunction with the pre-orders. And he has a point. I also think he would not include Grim Fandango in that sentence, if he and other youtube *ahem* reviewers (he himself doesn't claim that he properly reviews stuff - and he doesn't, he just offers his own opinion) were given review copies in advance. But that's pointless as a hypothetical.

I really don't get why one should pre-order things that close to their release (it's another thing if it is done to back the game in some crowd funding platform or via a pre-order early in the development - understanding the risks involved).

Garrett24601: I hate to pre-order games, but I will have to make an exception this time.
I have the old disc copy and it doesn't want to install on a 64 bit machine so this is a wonderful compromise.
I think there are at least two options to fix that.

Either use the ResidualVM to run the game:

http://www.gog.com/forum/general/grim_fardango_now_fully_compatible_with_residualvm/page1

Or use this 3rd party setup/launcher for the game:

I've yet to test either though.

Given how Double Fine handlede Spacebase DF9 and Broken Age.
Given how we still do not have DOS collectors for X-Wing and Tie Fighter.

I will wait for the reviews.

I really hope it will be a good port. More bonus would also be great.

Why on earth they do that. I order stuff frequently or at least semi-frequently from Gamersgate and I haven't noticed that community there is hostile towards GOG or Double Fine. And Gamersgate hasn't promised Grim Fandango pre-orders, so there's no real reason to be angry.

Because preorders are bad for publicity when it comes out that the game is not what is expected to be by the majority of users. Also Double Fine has made its share of enemies by in the last time cashing in on Spacebase DF-9 and then releasing half of the promised game and this is just last of their stunts. A lot of people basically hate them now.

Actually from what I've seen the hashtag used is #GamerGate.
Yeah... it makes sense (to anyone familiar with that can of worms).

PraetorianWolfie: This is correct, but it still is not 100% crash proof or bug proof (compatibility support is tagged as "good" not "excellent"). ResidualVM is still under development and they haven't reached an 1.0 build yet. To be fair they have released stable versions (most recent is the 0.2.0, a few days ago on Dec 31) where they added support for Myst III.
That's good to know. I have myst3 still on CD, one day I might give that a go if there hasn't been a digital fixed release or remaster in the mean time.

GamerGate, not the store GamersGate. Yes, it is different. No, it hasn't stopped people from confusing each other.

Magmarock: GOG Staff, I would like to know how many people are preodring this. I bet it's a lot.

Ciris: As you might imagine, we can't give away numbers of sales. :( However, if you take a look at the length of this thread and at social media, It seems like quite a popular title!

Plus, as mobutu said, our catalogue also gives a hint.
Holy shit, it already outsold Jack Keane!

JACK KEANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post I quoted talked about Gamersgate and not about Gamergate, so I assumed that he was referring to Gamersgate community and not to Gamergate community. Gamergate makes more sense.
