Grim Fandango resurrected.

Grim Fandango Remastered marks the return of gaming's most recognisable, and notoriously unavailable, cult classic - now on Windows, Mac, and Linux. This upcoming release got everybody so excited, Tim Schafer even prepared a special trailer all about how you can pre-order Grim Fandango Remastered (and why that’s a fine idea) right now, exclusively on GOG.com for the first week!

Grim Fandango is by far the single most wishlisted game by the GOG.com community with an overwhelming 45,000 votes. It's a unique blend of Mexican folklore with film noir stylings, and has been critically praised for its art direction, writing, and memorable characters.

Grim Fandango Remastered refreshes, refines, and remasters the award winning title and Tim Schafer's last hurrah as LucasArts' adventure-gaming-extraordinaire. The remaster modernizes the game's presentation and gameplay with completely repainted textures, widescreen support, and quite possibly best of all: modern controls. You can now say goodbye to unwieldy tank controls, a staple of the early 3D era, and enjoy a fully point-and-click interface - but only if you want! The option to play the game as originally envisioned is always there.

Have you missed Grim Fandango the first time around? Now's your chance to experience gaming history like never before, or if you have played it in its heyday - you're probably long overdue for another go anyway. You can pre-order Grim Fandango Remastered right now on GOG.com!
The pre-order will last until Tuesday, January 27, when the game is expected to launch on GOG.com.

It took a lot to bring this classic back to life. If you’d like to learn more about the remaster, Double Fine and 2 Player Productions have just released the newest episode of The Making of Grim Fandango Remastered - a recommended watch.

Elatis: Yeah Tim is a thief and a liar. He'll never see another dime from me again.
I wouldn't say so much of a thief as a bad business manager. When you are a dev in charge of both your finances and development there isn't another party to pull you in line when deliverables aren't being met. Traditional funding does at least have that part though even with AAA there are some projects that experience feature creep or flounder.

---
You'll have to tell your friends to shutup if the game is good and they are playing it. Nothing worse than standing on your principles while everyone rubs your face in it.

deonast: I'll wait until release and see some reviews before I dive in. Though this is a different case to Broken Age

Wait and see, that'd be me.
I really want to play Grim Fandango but I too may wait since I have already played some of it before the first time it came out eons ago. On your broken age point I really want to play it but I'm waiting until it is either.
1. Finished
2. Cheap enough I don't mind (as much) that i'd be getting half a game.

I backed the game on Kickstarter (Broken Age) that is. So I'm waiting for the second part to come out before I play. Since I have a huge backlog of games I'm in no particular hurry. I should have access to the making of documentaries, which I could watch in the meantime (that sort of stuff always interests me) just lost track of where the project is at. I have a huge back log of emails so I'm sure there are status updates in there somewhere.

To all who don't go to back and finance a game to be completed I'd never recommend buying before complete no matter who it is. You back games based on maybe never getting a product but funding to hope it is finalised. If you buy a game, then you want the whole thing (hopefully not pre-order) and you get a chance to see what reviewers think of it.

So with Broken Age I'd say wait until it is out in full and there are a few reviews.

JudasIscariot: Sooo any Linux fans excited about the Linux version of Grim Fandango Remastered? I for one can't wait to try it out on my home install :D
Sure, I have troubles deciding though with Avernum 2 coming, and Dark Side (both work in Wine), but since GF is Linux native and DRM-free on day one I think that takes the cake ;)

Impaler26: What about the original version? I'm not interested in a remake.

Ciris: I don't know anything about the old version coming up - but in this one, you can switch to the classic controls & graphics from the remastered version, but it's not fully like switching to the old one entirely.

It's enough to get a feel of how the game looked, but music and some other stuff stays in the remastered version throughout.
Do you know if the minimum system requirements are lower if one chooses the classic graphics & controls, or does it still have the same system requirements as the GOG game-card says to get the game to run?
I don't pre-order anything, but I'll definitely be keeping my eye on this. If it turns out to be a solid port, then count me in for a purchase!!
well, Schafer is an idiot who burnt money from one of the biggest kickstarter campaigns, so I'm really not sure we should feed him more money...

but I really want to play this game :/

dilemma...

Silverhawk170485: Could it be that this is GOG exclusive? No Preorder or any mention of it on Steam, Gamersgate or anywhere else. GOG bashed Steam? :D
avatar
Matruchus: Well its seems gog is the only one getting a preorder period.
From what I understood the preorder exclusivity on gog is only for this week, starting next week one could preorder it also on ssteam.

Ah, ok. Basically this is then meant to bring sales to gog first and then steam later not that it makes a big difference really. 9/10 of people will still buy on steam.

Garrett24601: I hate to pre-order games, but I will have to make an exception this time.
I have the old disc copy and it doesn't want to install on a 64 bit machine so this is a wonderful compromise.

zaine-h: You can run the data files in . There is even a [url=http://kotaku.com/hooray-someone-finally-fixed-grim-fandango-1529330636]point-and-click mod that gets you the same control scheme so you don't have to wait until the remaster comes out.
This is correct, but it still is not 100% crash proof or bug proof (compatibility support is tagged as "good" not "excellent"). ResidualVM is still under development and they haven't reached an 1.0 build yet. To be fair they have released stable versions (most recent is the 0.2.0, a few days ago on Dec 31) where they added support for Myst III.

But if the developers are not comfortable/confident enough to get to a 1.x release, then it is doubtful that GOG or another party will choose to use this method (like they did with scummvm or dosbox) to package and distribute a playable original version of GF (on top of it being largely redundant based on what the remastered offers).

Also note, that I was able to run GF without ResidualVM in Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7 (i think 32bit, haven't tried 64 bits). I did encounter crashes and glitches and had to set the CPU affinity and also use the software render, but eventually I played it to the end (with all the known bugs that remained after or caused by the last official patch).

I do agree though, that there will definately be reviews that compare pure original with both remastered version and the classic mode within the remastered. These will probably help everyone get a better idea about how much they really need to play the pure original version, when the remastered is already available.

Last note, about the wishlist thing. I also had voted before the remastered version was even thing. As things are now and from what I know and seen about the remastered version and the people who worked on it, I do consider that my wish is fullfilled, and I will be getting the game (not preordering though). I am just saying that maybe the title change in the entry is in the spirit that we are getting the only playable and faithful version of Grim Fandango (and then some) that there will be (probably forever) - something already noted by a gog staff in that entry. Maybe not all who voted think that GOG cheated there (for what purpose exactly?) and that this sets a bad precendent of tampering with community votes...
GOG Staff, I would like to know how many people are preodring this. I bet it's a lot.

Well if it helps you aren't just feeding him, you are feeding his employees who worked on this, and their families who they support.

they won't reveal this figure to us but the close you can get is checking how's the game doing on the best ever sold games on gog: currently is on page 12 (from 19) on the position 565.
tis pretty good for a game/preorder that started selling 21 hours ago ;)

As you might imagine, we can't give away numbers of sales. :( However, if you take a look at the length of this thread and at social media, It seems like quite a popular title!

Plus, as mobutu said, our catalogue also gives a hint.
