Grim Fandango resurrected.

Grim Fandango Remastered marks the return of gaming's most recognisable, and notoriously unavailable, cult classic - now on Windows, Mac, and Linux. This upcoming release got everybody so excited, Tim Schafer even prepared a special trailer all about how you can pre-order Grim Fandango Remastered (and why that’s a fine idea) right now, exclusively on GOG.com for the first week!

Grim Fandango is by far the single most wishlisted game by the GOG.com community with an overwhelming 45,000 votes. It's a unique blend of Mexican folklore with film noir stylings, and has been critically praised for its art direction, writing, and memorable characters.

Grim Fandango Remastered refreshes, refines, and remasters the award winning title and Tim Schafer's last hurrah as LucasArts' adventure-gaming-extraordinaire. The remaster modernizes the game's presentation and gameplay with completely repainted textures, widescreen support, and quite possibly best of all: modern controls. You can now say goodbye to unwieldy tank controls, a staple of the early 3D era, and enjoy a fully point-and-click interface - but only if you want! The option to play the game as originally envisioned is always there.

Have you missed Grim Fandango the first time around? Now's your chance to experience gaming history like never before, or if you have played it in its heyday - you're probably long overdue for another go anyway. You can pre-order Grim Fandango Remastered right now on GOG.com!
The pre-order will last until Tuesday, January 27, when the game is expected to launch on GOG.com.

It took a lot to bring this classic back to life. If you’d like to learn more about the remaster, Double Fine and 2 Player Productions have just released the newest episode of The Making of Grim Fandango Remastered - a recommended watch.

Sold.

I have played a pirated version years after its release when it was nowhere to be found here. One of my favorites. And rebuilt controls sounds awesome, I might actuallz be tempted to replay it :)

marsrunner: It really is amazing we get releases like this at all with all the whining the vocal minority engages in. I'm doubly surprised they are releasing it on GoG.
you could say it's... doubly fine.

"puts on shades"

YYYYYYEEEEEEAAAAAHHHHHHH!
Now I just need Full Throttle and The Curse of Monkey Island and my adventure fix is satisfied for months... or with my gaming rate lately for years.

I wanted to play Grim Fandango ever since it was released. I played the demo, but life got in the way (and other games), and I sort of forgot about it.

It's unfortunate to see so many GoG customers are upset by this announcement, although it seems like a lot of exaggeration. Let me say however that I do understand how important nostalgia can be for some, and how satisfying it can be to replay an old game with all of it's faults intact. And not all of us have or can access true original copies, nor do all of us have old computers lying around for a truly original, old-school experience. Which, in my mind, is what you really want if you're that serious about a perfect nostalgia trip.

But I for one can't complain about improved controls, revised graphical presentation, and a re-recorded soundtrack that can utilize the power of modern sound systems. A classic game, with it's story intact, and controls that won't give me a headache? Sign me up!

Thanks GoG for giving me a chance to finally play this damn game.

Well said, cheers to you and I hope you remain mistaken for a corpse for all eternity!
I don't often pre-order, but when I do, I get a classic game remake that also includes the genre-defining original.

Keep playing, my friends.

JudasIscariot: Sooo any Linux fans excited about the Linux version of Grim Fandango Remastered? I for one can't wait to try it out on my home install :D
YEEAAAH.

Hell yeah, I loved this game when I was younger. So good to see we're getting a remastered edition.

Woohoo, I'll be spending the next 2 weeks jumping around happily.

synfresh: I 100% agree with you, they shouldn't have did that if that was the case. I don't think it precludes them from selling this in the store though if they did nothing to the wishlist, no matter how many votes there was.

Matruchus: This is the point that most flamers screaming at us don't understand. What we are saying is that gog should not take our votes and just unilaterally change them to something else. That is the issue and nobody from us has anything against the released game. That's why I made the wishlist for gog not to change the wishes. If they just confirmed the remastered version without fusing our votes from the original version into it nobody would say anything. Ok some would still grumble which is normal. What gog did is not right and is a breach of trust and that's all what most of us is trying to say.
I can understand your concerns - something similar happened with the installers and Linux fans, which is now being resolved nicely.

On the other hand:
" You can now say goodbye to unwieldy tank controls, a staple of the early 3D era, and enjoy a fully point-and-click interface - but only if you want! The option to play the game as originally envisioned is always there. "

So it really sounds like they're including the original. Maybe hold off on the pitchforks for a bit?

As I said before im not raising the pitchforks just hate what they did with the wishlist. The remake will have a kind off retro switch option like some other games had that is true but if that will be the whole original game with original soundtrack, original controls, original textures, etc. that remains to be seen :) As said I have nothing against this release.

Matruchus: Anybody wanting to remind gog not to manipulate the community wishlist for its own designs in future can vote here:

http://www.gog.com/wishlist/site/gog_stop_manipulating_community_wishlist
Cheers for that, voted.

I encourage everyone to read Eli's comment in the linked wishlist entry, it sums up the situation pretty well.
Wishlist entries should not be manipulated for any reason, less so for marketing and PR reasons, as it shakes our trust in the system.

It's really cool this is coming here! <3

But I can't help but agree with those unhappy about the wishlist-votes-switcheroo. Silently taking one's vote and putting it elswhere is just not cool, no matter how trivial the context is. Personally I'm very happy about the remastered version, because the controls really weren't all that great when I gave the game a try back then, but that's not the point. This should've been handled more elegantly and openly at least.

Stormwalker: *When it's released on GOG, I'm going to give it one star because I prefer the original no matter how long people have been waiting for it to be released on here.*
I got that impression.
However, talking of things "flying over heads" Why do you think I first opened an account on GOG? And why do you think Double Fine felt the need to remaster this game?

Irony. Now that's something that's stratospheric above your own head.
Refuse to pre-order unless they throw every single bonus at us, old music score, new music score, wallpapers, artbook, concept drawings and whatever else can be done via digital
so GOG...
Thank you so much for releasing this!!! I am looking forward to playing through it again. This was one of the the highlight games from my childhood. So glad the chance to try it again is finally a reality!!!

A remastered version is totally fine by me. I get that purists want the original version, but it seems like it's going to be easy to switch back and forth between remastered content and mostly original content. It's not as though they totally remade the content or took something out or added something to the gameplay itself that differs from the original. The controls are modernized but if you can switch back to the original control scheme at will I have a hard time understanding why some seem so upset.

I don't see how better graphics and remastered audio will break the experience of the original game, especially when they are optional. Is it really such a horrible thing? I get that people voted for the original and not a remastered version. But it seems at this point you can play in a mode that is pretty darn close to the original version. Agreed that GOG should not have switched the votes on the wishlist though.

Anyhow, having any form of the game with store support that I also don't have to spend a bunch of time patching and editing to run on modern systems is awesome. It's better then hunting down the original CD's on ebay and paying more then I did for them the first time around.

although...yeah. the pre-order incentive is kind of ridiculous. A wallpaper. 1 wallpaper. But pre-orders in general are kind of ridiculous to begin with so I guess it's nothing out of the ordinary.

I never said the quote you've attributed to me, or anything close to it. Nice strawman, bro. As for your rambling series of rhetorical questions, what do they have to do with what I brought up? I'm beginning to think you either lack the necessary skill for reading comprehension, or you just want an excuse to say that I'm wrong about something. Come back when you've gained some maturity.
