Grim Fandango resurrected.

Grim Fandango Remastered marks the return of gaming's most recognisable, and notoriously unavailable, cult classic - now on Windows, Mac, and Linux. This upcoming release got everybody so excited, Tim Schafer even prepared a special trailer all about how you can pre-order Grim Fandango Remastered (and why that’s a fine idea) right now, exclusively on GOG.com for the first week!

Grim Fandango is by far the single most wishlisted game by the GOG.com community with an overwhelming 45,000 votes. It's a unique blend of Mexican folklore with film noir stylings, and has been critically praised for its art direction, writing, and memorable characters.

Grim Fandango Remastered refreshes, refines, and remasters the award winning title and Tim Schafer's last hurrah as LucasArts' adventure-gaming-extraordinaire. The remaster modernizes the game's presentation and gameplay with completely repainted textures, widescreen support, and quite possibly best of all: modern controls. You can now say goodbye to unwieldy tank controls, a staple of the early 3D era, and enjoy a fully point-and-click interface - but only if you want! The option to play the game as originally envisioned is always there.

Have you missed Grim Fandango the first time around? Now's your chance to experience gaming history like never before, or if you have played it in its heyday - you're probably long overdue for another go anyway. You can pre-order Grim Fandango Remastered right now on GOG.com!
The pre-order will last until Tuesday, January 27, when the game is expected to launch on GOG.com.

It took a lot to bring this classic back to life. If you’d like to learn more about the remaster, Double Fine and 2 Player Productions have just released the newest episode of The Making of Grim Fandango Remastered - a recommended watch.

Lifthrasil: I don't understand this. How is getting extra content 'manipulating the wishlist'? You DO get the original version that everybody wished for with this release. You just get ALSO a version with better graphics. You can switch back and forth between these. So where exactly do you see this as 'manipulation'?
He took the voting for an original release to mean getting exactly that when it's finally put out to the store and to not have the remastered version to be considered 1:1 identical enough to warrant the conglomeration of votes. Technically, he's right and I can't blame him, even though I know they include modes to make the game appear as originally released. It's not *exactly* the same thing. It's a purist viewpoint.

PaterAlf: The problem is that GOG took about 40 000 votes for the original game and changed the wishlist entry to "Grim Fandango (HD Remastered)". The remastered version may be fine (we can't know by now, because none of us played it), but it's not the original game (for example the original music is missing) and not what the voters originally voted for (even if many might be content with the remastered version). No one should take votes from a ballot and change them into something else. It's jut not right.
I 100% agree with you, they shouldn't have did that if that was the case. I don't think it precludes them from selling this in the store though if they did nothing to the wishlist, no matter how many votes there was.
just wanted to chime in....
This is FINALLY Happening!

PraetorianWolfie: If you are at all interested in playing the better version of this game, please try and watch the making of videos and the discussion panel at Pax Prime about the people involved and the process for the remastered version.

You use strong words that are very disconnected from (and unfair to) what we are getting with the remaster.

We are actually getting more, way more, and not less. And in playable form.

Ofcourse you can totally keep whatever rushed opinion you have formed and not buy this. No harm there either.

drealmer7: What you consider more/better, I consider bastardized. I'm not saying it's not more, I'm saying I don't want the more. It's utterly frustrating that it is hard for so many people to understand, which is why I use the E.T. example, I thought it would shine a little light on my perspective. Spielberg was all about the remastering of E.T., that doesn't mean I'm okay with it.

AndywinXp: @drealmer7:

No, the problem is that you're getting the game with the ability to switch from a classic to a remastered mode at no extra price (because the original one would still cost around 10 euros), and you're whining about having an extra for free. Grim Remastered was going to be released here with or without the wishlist. If you can't sleep at night because of this, there's still Amazon.

drealmer7: You don't even know what you're talking about. Where is the original score? The original startup screen? The original EXPERIENCE?!
Look at this fucking Asberger's case.

This is the point that most flamers screaming at us don't understand. What we are saying is that gog should not take our votes and just unilaterally change them to something else. That is the issue and nobody from us has anything against the released game. That's why I made the wishlist for gog not to change the wishes. If they just confirmed the remastered version without fusing our votes from the original version into it nobody would say anything. Ok some would still grumble which is normal. What gog did is not right and is a breach of trust and that's all what most of us is trying to say.

RottenRotz: Meh..gonna wait for original

zeffyr: It's not possible to release the original Grim Fandango on GOG. Please read the info from the wishlist:

1. The aim of the Wishlist is to let you vote on games that we will be able to release. With the release of Grim Fandango Remastered (with its functionality to return some of the old version's style with changing to old controls/graphics), it's highly unlikely (if not a complete 0%) that we'll ever publish Grim Fandango in its original. 2. We do not have any way to access Grim Fandango in its original to test, publish and sell/distribute on GOG. 3. There are virtually no plot differences between the original and the remastered version, characters and motives remain the same - making it further unlikely that we'll have the original on the site. 4. The original wish also referred to including the old version with the new, which is something we, in a way, fulfilled by the remastered version allowing for changes to old graphics+controls & not changing the plot and feel of the game.

C'mon guys, don't whine! The game is coming! :)
Well now..thats a plot twist

skeecher: This game has been community wishlisted since GOG started and now that it's coming out we still get people whinging about "Neuurgh! I prefer the clunky original?"
How is someone's preference considered "whinging"? I get that you're so self-absorbed that you can't see why someone could have a different opinion than yours, but at least get it through your thick skull that they have a right to express their thoughts, even if you disagree with them.

I for one think that it would be cool to see the original on GOG, for a number of reasons. Sometimes people like to experience games as they were originally, even if that version is technically "inferior" or "clunky". Sometimes nostalgia and historical preservation count for people. Clearly that concept flew right over your head.

avatar
skeecher: And anyone who DOESN'T like this game (whether original or remastered) knows absolutely fuck all about games, and should piss off to ShitSteam where they belong. It was a classic that all others are measured by.
Well I'm glad we have the final word on what games we should like and where we should go if we don't like them. Seriously, who made you the expert on classic games? You're just another big mouth behind a keyboard, ranting as though your opinions matter more than the next guy. Calm your ass down, bro.

I thought 14 pages in this thread came from people celebrating that this classic is finally getting a proper re-release.Nop just a whole lot of unjustified bitching.

Cool!

Just to be sure: There is zero incentive to pre-order right? Sooooo what's the point...for all we now it's as bad as AC unity...
Glad to see this here.
Pre-ordered and that should make it the fourth game I bought with no discount.
Wishlisted for now. Since Czech crown weakened in last days, I've to postpone buying of it. Hope that rate gets better within several months.
A solution would be to also release the original, just like with Rise of the Triad.
There are also 2 versions of that game; the original and the remastered version from 2013.
And i thought same happened with Baldur's Gate. Also 2 versions here. So come on, GoG. Give the people what they want and also release the original grim fandango, just what the people were asking for.

topfgun: Question: Will the soundtrack be downloadable too?
I really want to know this, too. I'm not that big on game soundtracks in general, but this is one that I dearly want.

ixbt25i: There should be a digital store that actually specialises in provinding classic games, making them run on modern systems as they were originally meant to be played.
But there is such store: gog.com
