Grim Fandango resurrected.

Grim Fandango Remastered marks the return of gaming's most recognisable, and notoriously unavailable, cult classic - now on Windows, Mac, and Linux. This upcoming release got everybody so excited, Tim Schafer even prepared a special trailer all about how you can pre-order Grim Fandango Remastered (and why that’s a fine idea) right now, exclusively on GOG.com for the first week!

Grim Fandango is by far the single most wishlisted game by the GOG.com community with an overwhelming 45,000 votes. It's a unique blend of Mexican folklore with film noir stylings, and has been critically praised for its art direction, writing, and memorable characters.

Grim Fandango Remastered refreshes, refines, and remasters the award winning title and Tim Schafer's last hurrah as LucasArts' adventure-gaming-extraordinaire. The remaster modernizes the game's presentation and gameplay with completely repainted textures, widescreen support, and quite possibly best of all: modern controls. You can now say goodbye to unwieldy tank controls, a staple of the early 3D era, and enjoy a fully point-and-click interface - but only if you want! The option to play the game as originally envisioned is always there.

Have you missed Grim Fandango the first time around? Now's your chance to experience gaming history like never before, or if you have played it in its heyday - you're probably long overdue for another go anyway. You can pre-order Grim Fandango Remastered right now on GOG.com!
The pre-order will last until Tuesday, January 27, when the game is expected to launch on GOG.com.

It took a lot to bring this classic back to life. If you’d like to learn more about the remaster, Double Fine and 2 Player Productions have just released the newest episode of The Making of Grim Fandango Remastered - a recommended watch.

Djungelurban: Getting a remake when you want the original also isn't a solution.
That's absurd. It's clearly stated that you they aren't able to bring the original one, so isn't it better to have the opportunity to purchase the HD version rather than none of them?

You don't have to buy it, you know. It's up to you. And I'm grateful to GOG that they made it come here eventually :-)

fr33kSh0w2012: and even then There is STILL PROBLEMS!

Invisible Characters!

https://github.com/residualvm/residualvm/issues/552

Yeah It happened to me too Invisible characters in Hardware accelerated version had to play in software Mode!
That bug report was closed two years ago though, and it was software rendering that was broken, so if it still happens you may want to file a new one.
This seems relevent:

JudasIscariot: OK, folks, the languages have been confirmed for Grim Fandango Remastered so please check the game card :)
Check the game card!? Are you crazy!?!?

Rixasha: There's a number of game re-releases that have "new and improved" music that then turns out to be quite the disappointment for everyone who heard the original first.
Care to provide an example?

I can only think of Monkey Island's 2 case; the original music was still there when you switched to the classic version but they had to drop the iMuse seamless transitions system).

And I am pretty sure that if you manage to run the classic version included in the MI remake(s) with scummvm (it required a bit of simple hacking from the user side) you are playing the exact original version (minus the pirate protection intro test I guess).
high rated
I just want to go against the grain in this thread and thank Double Fine for *not* including pre-order exclusive content.
Some people are never happy. Seriously, there is little to no point in releasing the original version. If you really must have it, buy the discs from Amazon or eBay and use one of the custom installers off the net, or better yet, ResidualVM. There, problem solved.

Day one purchase for me, especially at that low price point.

Then no hablamos espanol (yes, I know there's a tilde missing in "espanol") as far as Grim Fandango is concerned :P

I've made a note that you and only you are to receive only the English version of the game as punishment for not checking the game card :P
low rated
Easily and by far the most overrated LucasArts game.
Are they really making Portuguese audio? Oh man, that's so cool. It was already cool with Witcher 3 but I can't ever run Witcher 3 on this machine.

LynetteC: but there are many of us who have not been as fortunate and would still like to experience this classic the way it was originally envisioned by the developers.

PraetorianWolfie: *snip*
I guess I believe that if you play through the remastered version, you are still playing the exact same game the way its developers envisioned it - and then some, as they had the time to refresh and tweak it a bit- and there will be no reason to seek out the original anymore.
Indeed, it was a very ambitious game at the time it was released and I am sure many compromises were made due to limitations of technology. The developer commentary included in the game would probably highlight all the issues they had during the development cycle of the original game as well. Its not like some third party studio remastered the classic game, the original trio of Tim Schaffer, Peter Chan and Peter Peter McConnell were involved in making this the best version possible for fans old and new.

However, I clearly remember from the making of videos that they were able to switch between the original and the improved graphics on the fly when demonstrating the earlier builds of the game. So I would very much appreciate it if Double Fine took a page from the Monkey Island special editions and have the original graphics version as well. If only to highlight the various improvements made to the visuals while maintaining the original aesthetic. Also the folks that are really nostalgic would be more understanding of GOG not being able to release the original version.

Well, they did manage to get System Shock 2 working, and that was a way more unruly beast to tackle, so I hardly think the obstacle is a technical one... And if the problem is a legal one? That's a problem of will power, not inability. Not saying that makes it easy to solve, since that would potentially require 3 different parties (GOG, Disney and DoubleFine) all pulling in the same direction... Legally speaking... And people may be stubborn, but it's hardly insurmountable...

And I'm not saying I don't want the HD version to be released... I'm fine with that, I'm just against it taking the place of the original. And thus yes, I will not buy it... I wasn't itching that hard to sit down and play it, would mostly just be a bit of gaming history on my virtual shelf but it could have been interesting in a time capsule kind of sense... The remake doesn't even have that going for it though and thus I have no interest.

And why would I be grateful to GOG? I mean, first of all they haven't given me what I wanted and second of all, I don't owe them anything. They're a store and I'm a customer of that store. In a sense I guess it's kinda like a symbiosis but really, they need me a hell of a lot more than I need them. If anything they owe me since I'm staying loyal to them. Doesn't mean that I'm really entitled to anything of course but since you started throwing around words like "grateful"...

Oh, well, it could be worse, you could have locked me to a Polish version or something XD

moonshineshadow: English only? Meh... I'll stick to my ancient pc and original disk. For me nostalgic games are a no go without the language I originally played them with.
Check again. It's now in German, too.

Well, it is getting replaced, if we want it or not. I don't believe the original version will ever be released by Disney or someone else as it wouldn't make any sense financially.
I think it's futile to keep pestering GOG for releasing the original version as I see no way this could happen in the future. The remastered version is the best we'll get.
