Grim Fandango resurrected.

Grim Fandango Remastered marks the return of gaming's most recognisable, and notoriously unavailable, cult classic - now on Windows, Mac, and Linux. This upcoming release got everybody so excited, Tim Schafer even prepared a special trailer all about how you can pre-order Grim Fandango Remastered (and why that’s a fine idea) right now, exclusively on GOG.com for the first week!

Grim Fandango is by far the single most wishlisted game by the GOG.com community with an overwhelming 45,000 votes. It's a unique blend of Mexican folklore with film noir stylings, and has been critically praised for its art direction, writing, and memorable characters.

Grim Fandango Remastered refreshes, refines, and remasters the award winning title and Tim Schafer's last hurrah as LucasArts' adventure-gaming-extraordinaire. The remaster modernizes the game's presentation and gameplay with completely repainted textures, widescreen support, and quite possibly best of all: modern controls. You can now say goodbye to unwieldy tank controls, a staple of the early 3D era, and enjoy a fully point-and-click interface - but only if you want! The option to play the game as originally envisioned is always there.

Have you missed Grim Fandango the first time around? Now's your chance to experience gaming history like never before, or if you have played it in its heyday - you're probably long overdue for another go anyway. You can pre-order Grim Fandango Remastered right now on GOG.com!
The pre-order will last until Tuesday, January 27, when the game is expected to launch on GOG.com.

It took a lot to bring this classic back to life. If you’d like to learn more about the remaster, Double Fine and 2 Player Productions have just released the newest episode of The Making of Grim Fandango Remastered - a recommended watch.

I'm so very happy you guys are bringing this title to us!! It's a fantastic game, and maybe this time I'll get all the way through it. I'll be ready to download it on the 27th for sure!

darthspudius: If this version plays absolutely fine, there will be absolutely no need for the original. If people are that desperate for it I'm sure they can go buy the original disc copy like I did.
for example, the majority of monkey island fans prefer the original over the remastered versions. I think we will understand whether or not there is any need only after the game is released
Awesome news! :D Will definitely get after release.

Is there any obvious reason to pre-order this and not just wait for it to release first?

Nope, it seems no pre-order bonus or so, preordering it is really pointless.
I´m not so sure yet about the quality of the remake itself.
BUT I like these two points, a lot:

1. Classic score re-recorded with a full live orchestra
2. Over 2 hours of exclusive developer commentary

Great!

Question: Will the soundtrack be downloadable too?
It has to be! Seriously!
high rated
YES! This is incredibly great news. I guess Tim is indeed aware of how much people want this game here on GOG and that is why we're getting it on day one. This is a pleasant surprise really because Costume Quest 2 and Hack n' Slash for example are still not on GOG yet or even DRM Free elsewhere for that matter. Thank you very much GOG and Double Fine for finally bringing this gem back from the dead (no pun intended).

We are arguably getting the most wanted game here on GOG which hasn't been available for purchase anywhere for well over a decade now yet the level of cynicism in this thread is just mind boggling. As PaetorianWolfe posted above, nothing in the game is being changed because it is a remaster not a remake. Furthermore, it will also include the option of switching back to the original version of the game with a press of a button (EDIT: Not confirmed but I remember something like this in one of the making of videos, will only know for sure when the game is out.)

Think of it as a Criterion version of the game (Tim's words) where they are going to make it the best looking and sounding version of the game possible. They even kept the same aspect ratio as the original to preserve Peter Chan's intent with art style for the 4:3 format. The best thing about this version is that we are finally going to get improved PnC controls along with the much maligned tank controls of the original game. Apart from the higher system requirements I really don't understand why people would want to play the game using ResidualVM emulator instead of natively on modern systems.

All that being said, having an exclusive pre-order period of one week is kind of ridiculous as its not like buyers on GOG are going to get the game any sooner then January 27. I guess we all just have to wait till the game is released to really believe that it is the definitive version of Grim Fandango.

The only reason I see is to send a message and show support for gog ;)
Now my original disc version is in perfect working condition but this is damn tempting...
This can't be possible ... the day has come!
Well, I'm glad it's coming here at launch, for all those platforms, and about Tim's stance that copy protection is for suckers. But I could be more excited, especially since this seems to bury all hopes of getting the old version here.

In general I'm against remakes where the game was fine just as it was. Did they at least remake the backgrounds in widescreen? I recall someone had such a project already somewhen, but the screenshots made me think not. I also fear that the re-recorded music will be a letdown and that I'll miss the old tracks. Has happened with plenty of titles so far.

But fortunately for me, I already have the original. Tried it out in ResidualVM some time back, didn't play for long but it seemed to be working just fine. They list compatibility as 'Good'.

I still might get this, I'll have to think about it.
Whaaaaatrg ?
Re: Grim Fandango's engine. It was called GRIME (Grim Engine). LucasArts also used this for Monkey Island 4 (Escape from Monkey Island).

I am pretty sure that there was an interview or a video where someone from Double Fine (possibly Tim) mentioned that they were aware about projects like ResidualVM (which is open source) and Grim Fandango deluxe. Maybe they were able to work with people from those projects (and also not remove the Grim Engine).

Re: switching to the original version in-game. I think that you can only switch to the classic control scheme for Manny (tank controls, as opposed to point and click). you can't switch to the classic version of the game (like you could in the MI Special Editions).

As an offtopic note, I've been trying to reply to a post for almost an hour, getting the message "please wait... processing" and waiting forever. Seriously gog, why is this forum so user-unfriendly?

It's not the forum rather we are slightly swamped with Grim Fandango pre-order purchases :)
