What possible harm can one crazy, mutant tentacle do?

Day of the Tentacle, the grand return of the grandest adventure of all, is available for pre-order now, only on GOG.com with a 10% discount for the first two weeks!

A crazy mutant tentacle is on the loose, plotting to take over the world. How you ask? That's not important right now! We need to be thinking about the how, just how are we going to fix this? Super simply, by going back to yesterday!

Alongside Grim Fandango, Monkey Island, Sam & Max, and Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle sits without question among the legendary golden-era adventures. Now, straight from the early '90s, Day of the Tentacle arrives in our dystopian future of 2016 — back for a blast from the past for those who missed it, and a shot of nostalgia for those who just miss it.

Day of the Tentacle Remastered is all the adventure you may remember with an optional layer of sweet improvements on top. You can mix and match between the unmistakably 1990s pixely art and a fresh high-res coat of paint, remastered audio, and an all new interface. There are extra goodies in the Remastered release as well, including in-game developer commentary and a fully playable version of the original Maniac Mansion. Your pre-order also comes with three exclusive Day of the Tentacle wallpapers, available right away to fuel your anticipation.

But don't take our word for it. Take it from the guy behind it all:

Welcome back to the Day of the Tentacle, available for pre-order now, exclusively on GOG.com! The pre-order discount will last for two weeks, until March 22, 8:59 PM GMT.

I never played this game, looks like fun especially the remastered edition. Wishlisted!

wvpr: Like I said earlier in the thread, one probable reason for complaints is the loss of perceived detail when you go from low-res pixel art to high-res line art. The low-res art implies extra detail. The high-res art makes it obvious there's no extra detail. It's a subtle difference, but the lack of implied detail can make high-res art look sterile and simplistic even though all the shapes and colors are the same.

I think they made the right choice here of flawlessly smoothing out the art without altering the original intent. They could have added extra detail and taken more liberties with the layout, but that guarantees it will look different from the original and risks turning out worse. Just like voice acting and music, art direction was an important part of classic point-and-click adventures. Tampering too much with anything that isn't broken risks breaking it.
The last sentence basically hints that the remastered version doesn't add much value, maybe even was not necessary at all. I mean that if you want to add value you have to tamper with something, otherwise you cannot hope to achieve anything. Of course there are risks but you have to take them.

For me, I had hoped for more detail in the graphics instead of just more smooth edges. Already with some smart filtering and upscaling of the original graphics one can achieve similar effects. More details would have been much more pleasant for the eye.

And in case I don't like it I could have switched back. So the risk of more detail would habe been somewhat limited.

Although this is an amazing game, I must say, no Linux Version, no buy from me. Sadly

greams: Nope!
I don't want to judge but this look like they've taken some HQ filter from SCUMMVM and just use it adding few brushes here and there... I'm gonna pass on those 15$
Here's why - SCUMMVM screenshot:
I have the feeling I miss something obvious... but what has the screenshot you linked to do with the remaster? That are the remastered graphics: http://images-3.gog.com/87da9ba4f3b46cd95ce48778715bf185df55a48dc7d5b1fba3a4463d8719f110.jpg or not?

eiii: Because keeping the DOS or SCUMMVM version of a game available is the best way to ensure that future generations will still be able to enjoy the game, even in 20 or more years.
Maybe that's what they want : Sell a new remaster every 20 years. So burying the original version is the best.
After watching the twitch stream I can say I'm a fan of the remastered graphics. Good job Doublefine.

But I would also like an original version of Day of the Tentacle as an extra. Let the fans decide whats essential Disney, my nostalgia knows no limits.
Konala just confirmed that the french version will be available. Maniac Mansion remains english only.

OlausPetrus: While I would love to play this, I have to pass this opportunity. Besides Labyrinth the original Maniac Mansion games are the only LucasArts adventures which I don't own. And I haven't been able to find copies of those games yet.

Unfortunately I don't buy adventure games unless I can buy the entire series, because besides playing I like collecting things. For me playing the game inside a game in a classic mode isn't the same thing as playing the original version 1987 version of the Maniac Mansion.

Wishbone: You don't have to. You can play the Maniac Mansion included in the original DOTT in ScummVM. It's in the game files. So if you have a copy of the original DOTT, you also have a standalone copy of Maniac Mansion.
To do that, I would need to find the original DOTT. I said original Maniac Mansion games in plural, because I don't own either game of the series.

Ah, sorry, I misunderstood you then. Even though DOTT is of course the actual Maniac Mansion 2, I've never heard anyone refer to it as such.

At any rate, since the original Maniac Mansion is included in the original DOTT, you can just buy DOTT if you can find it. Unless of course you insist on having original boxes and manuals as well.

While I understand the collector mentality, not buying anything unless you can get all of it at once seems counter-productive and severely limiting.
No Linux support and no DOS version? Pass!

No Tux! No Bucks!

According to Tim, "The original games are intact and playable inside the remastered game."

Facepalm....
What does this mean: original files are intact inside remastered edition files and Scummvm will recognize & run them? Can't we just get a clear answer in the subject from DF/GOG? They want us to preorder or not? Shit!

ReynardFox: Does anyone else find the redrawn graphics in this really cheap and gross looking?

Given this promises a toggle between original and remastered mode though means I'll snap this up when it arrives.
I do. The graphics look really cheap for me.They chose this cheap weird filtered semi-vector type of deal for this, same as in Monkey Island remakes.

In any case I promised myself to never buy a remake or an hd edition of anything after I bought Monkey Islands, Another World and Chaos Engine remasters. All of them have either major drawbacks or are unplayable.

foxworks: Indeed, this is how it was with the original release. Doesn't appear they will change it. Shame.
avatar
tikeno: You could play Maniac Mansion independently of DOTT in the old version; it was its own folder under the DOTT directory, with its own executable. Don't know how they're handling it here.
That, I did not know. I'll have to to take a look. Cheers!

I don't think I was ever aware of this! I still have my big boxed copy of DotT so if I dig it up I may have to locate that game. I've always wanted to play it.

I'd still love to see the original Maniac Mansion and DotT games/files included with this game and not just be able to "switch back and forth" with the graphics. :)
