I see Resident Evil: Code Veronica X has been added onto the wishlist and it one of the highest voted suggestions. RE:CV never had a native PC port so I am a little perplexed on how GOG would get a PC port like this; same with some other games.

I understand it is possible but I thought Gog's purposes was fixing older windows ports of PC titles and making them playable on modern machines. Don't get me wrong, I would love for RE:CV to be ported but wouldn't it be a bigger task porting from console ports? or would they be able to use emulation tools. Have there been any examples of this?

Frankly this is one of my biggest questions, especially seeing as it's one of GOG's staff picks for the dreamlist. If Capcom said yes, can GOG really bring a game like that here?

It's a Capcom game and Capcom has already made ports of their games to the PC and has already released such games on GOG, so why not trying convincing them to add more PC ports ?

Emulation maybe?

Many possible options for doing this:

- Capcom could make a port from the source data if they still have it or convert a port from the XBox 360 or Gamecube.

- Emulate one of the current console ports (this would be rather lazy though)

- GOG may be offering to port the game over themselves if they have it as a top pick (very unrealistic though it depends on how hard it would be to convert an existing port).

Again I'm just throwing stuff out there.

I find it weird to see it was a GOG Staff pick for the dreamlist since they never ported console games to PC before.

If they are doing console emulation i'm pretty sure they need to get the approval from console makers first to avoid legal issues.

It does seem weird to highlight a console game if there's no ability or desire to actually port the game over. Porting the game wouldn't be massively expensive, but they'd obviously need to go with the right team to actually do the port and deliver something that's meaningfully better than the other available options.

My gut is that between the clear success of the RE ports, the demand for CV: X on PC, and the fact that they're kinda sorta teasing it... this one is in the pipeline already. GOG's really digging into the whole "game preservation" shtick, so this feels like it'd be a huge marketing win for them.

I wouldn't have batted an eyelid if GOG just put console games on the Dreamlist. But, launching Dino Crisis 1+2 alongside the Dreamlist, putting Resident Evil: Code Veronica X at the second spot and marked it as "Our Pick"? Seems a bit too coincidental.

How would they go about it?

1) Most likely, Capcom would release it as part of a Resident Evil Retro Collection, similar to what they did with Ace Attorney, Marvel vs Capcom and Mega Man.
2) Alternatively, they could emulate either the Gamecube version (provided it doesn't piss off Nintendo), or the PS2 version (provided they can find a way around the BIOS).
3) The other possibility is that Capcom itself is doing the port standalone, which doesn't seem to fly with their current M.O (Capcom would either release the game as part of a collection, or remake it).
4) The other, other possibility is that GOG itself is doing the port, but they aren't port developers (to my knowledge) for this scenario to be believable.

A dreamlist is just that - a dream list. it is just what your dream would be, does not mean it is realistic

Saints Row 2 was infamously ported to PC by some branch of CD Projekt or another I recall. Which doesn't exactly inspire confidence in more ports given the state that game was left in on PC. But hey, that was years ago and if they're personally highlighting a game like that it must mean they have some idea of how they'd want to approach it if they got the go ahead. Will be curious to see how things turn out.

In a similar vein, Modern Vintage Gamer did an interesting video about Rockstar selling pirated versions of their titles. Relying on the pirates after gimping their own content. I thought it was humorous.

Sure, things like Ship of [Redacted] and [Redacted] decomps exist, but that's because emulating the games is a pain in the bum. (MIPS do be a different beast than x86.)

As to the matter of the Dreamlist, consider also how long we've had Black & White as a wish, which as far as anyone can tell is a rights and coding disaster with no source port in sight.

Lessee, Lionhead was dissolved into the Microsoft Blob Factory, Stinky Pete wants nothing to do with legitimate games, the game had multiple publishers including Electronic Arts, the middleware was obtained by Epic Games in 2021, and I'm sure others could list a few small problems as well.
