SultanOfSuave: They sell well; one metric of determining popularity is the number of wishlists, and one of the offending games is in the top 5 for the past 30 days.
Or two in top 6.

You waggish fellow!
This is the email in question (images attached). I don't know if I got this email for playing a couple of NSFW games or if everyone got it. Personally I'm not too bothered since they've rarely sent me games like this. But it does kind of look like a porn ad (technically is).

Those promotional emails are sent en masse without discrimination. The text at the top of the email (If you are underage, please leave without proceeding) would indicate that there are no checks to confirm the age of the users account.

CarChris: I also don't have a problem deleting unwanted e-mails. I just wish if GOG could send e-mails with exclusive discounts (the kind that it sends once or twice a week) only for games that one has got in his/her wishlist. I think that this method would have more success in people actually using the discount code (which is usually cheaper than when that game gets discounted in the normal discount periods) and get that game (to me at least).
In that case you would miss any offer you did not about even though you might have put it on your wishlist if you knew about it. Seems far from perfect for me.

Mechthorian: How ever would they figure out what games I'm interested in? It's a mystery. Clearly they just don't have this kind of data.

I go to the site for a lot of reasons. I spend my money on this site for a lot of reasons. Game preservation, offline backups, excellent deals, that kind of stuff.

I don't go here to beat my meat. I don't care if they want to keep these sorts of low effort games on their store, but putting them in marketing emails gives the wrong impression to customers.
It gives the impression to customers that they are selling all kind of games. You can call them "low effort games" but they are still games and GOG still can not know if you are one of the people who are interested in it or not. You might be surprised but there are GOG customers who are buying these games so again there's no way for GOG to know if you might be one of them or not. My personal advice: delete the mail and be done with it.

There's no reason to check the age in the mails since you are not allowed to have an account on GOG if you are underage and the mail adress is linked to your account.

What do you mean? If a guardian approves it, a user can have an account from the age of 16.

Okay, you have a point here but in this very special case it would mean that a parent approves that the content GOG is selling and of course also advertizing is suitable for the 16 or 17 year old - so I still don't see any problem.

How on earth should GOG know which kind of games you like or dislike?
how about the same way the most successful online store in the world does

Or here's an idea - maybe some people need to just put their big boy pants on and stop being weird about lady parts.

The whole "girls are scary and bad" mentality only makes the people doing it look like they're 12... maybe younger. Whatever age males are when they think all girls have cooties - that age. Are young children even allowed to have GOG accounts on their own? Maybe Mom or Dad needs to take over the account for them and curate the games they're allowed to have to play entirely offline until they're old enough to have the account themselves. This isn't unreasonable. Little kids shouldn't be online buying things unsupervised even if they have access to their parent's credit card.

No, please don't waste your time telling me that you're an adult man. I seriously won't believe it if you at like a child.

Cat... you know I like you, right? So please... come on. How many times do I need to say this? Can we please stop villifying people who just don't want porn games and ask for simple solutions that won't detract from anyone elses experience? Is wanting to be able to open your mail at work and asking for an optional filter really deserving of mockery?

This topic would be better discussed if it wasn't porn games, instead simply (type of) game I have no interest in purchasing. Would the connotations surrounding it vanish, and the discussion more measured? Probably. Unfortunately, the title of the thread is porn games. The good fellow who made the thread chose not to make that distinction, and demonstrated his displeasure for these games in particular, rather than addressing the broader issue. So Catventure's rebuke is warranted in my eyes.

It shouldn't be the OP's obligation to strategically avoid mentioning the particular kind of games because some other people can't stop themselves from personal attacks on the subject. That's complete upside down logic. It's like telling someone they shouldn't mention Star Wars because some people lose their shit over it.

Breja, please. Let's look at it objectively.

For example - Leanna's Slice of Life
https://www.gog.com/en/game/leannas_slice_of_life

You play as Leanna, an innocent and kindhearted girl, who is married to a piece of trash named Kain that racked up a lot of debts. This is essentially an abusive situation where a young lady is being exploited by a greedy man, especially since one of the jobs that you can get is prostitute.

Financial abuse is one of the most common and pervasive forms of domestic abuse. It doesn't help things that women continue to be paid less than men if doing the same exact job - essentially society fails us and makes it easier for us to be exploited in our household on the basis that we typically earn less.

When people railed against this game specifically, it was...
90% EWWW! Female parts are scary and bad!!!!!
10% Wow! The art really does achieve all new levels of suck.
0% The girl is in an abusive situation. Why are games like this even okay?

Similar can be said of Dungeon Tavern, which involves two heroes that have been kidnapped and are being made to work as prostitutes at a monster brothel.
https://www.gog.com/en/game/dungeon_tavern

That's the thing with complaints about porn games. It's entirely about the girl's body. It's never about the fact that quite a few of these games are really just games about abuse and exploitation.
What about X-Rated games for the ladies featuring DDG lads equipped like stallions strutting their stuff? We shouldn't neglect their prurient interests. Fair is fair after all. That's what the mag Playgirl was all about.

Of course. Someone shouldn't have to tip-toe around the matter. He should be free to bring up the topic without fear of personal attacks, and to disregard anyone that does. But not everyone is so gracious enough to oblige. I would expect most people to realise the potential for flames when stoking a fire, and consider a neutralising action in advance, when launching words for any unknown person to respond to that are likely to provoke a divisive response.

Why would potential customers complain about that? It's one of the reasons a customer may purchase a game like that. To engage in the breaking of social taboos in a fictional setting. It allows the player to "enjoy" power and agency that they would not otherwise. It would be like a war game without being allowed to kill; to have direct control over the lives of other men; whether they live or die. I would anticipate the opposite, customers complaining that it's too tame instead of too depraved. Other users may care little for the moral implications of the story. The visuals make or break these sorts of games, after all!

But perhaps you mean the criticism from the general public; users of this forum; people receiving them as email adverts. I'm also not sure why this group of people would concern themselves with the details of the plot. If they know, do you think it should concern them? If they glance at the images and judge the quality based on that alone, should they be interested with the potential immorality and exploitation involved within? I am typically of the opinion that they should not, so I would be interested to hear the reason you think otherwise, should you do so.
