Grargar: I can already imagine thousands of lawyers' eyes creepily turning towards the direction of Steam, their hands furiously typing on their keyboards, as they prepare their next Cease and Desist templates.
Lawers being so dumb that they have to type furiously to prepare for templates aren't really good lawyers. If anything, a good layer already has templates prepared for any situation so they can just wait until someone makes a mistake to click on them once to get those out en-masse. Good metajoke.

Sueing with only a click now this is podlawyering!

Wow, you mean how I can use the single worst emulator user interface ever made AND have DRM? What a deal!

Seriously, the Retroarch GUi is anti-user-friendly to the point of feeling hostile.

totally agree. on my 5:4 screen (for old games) it puts "add games" + sign out of the screen so it is completely useless thing, and interface is indeed awful, haven't seen such bad UI ever.

steamDB lists retroarch as free. I wonder what is going on :)

Probably that it'll... you know, be free when it launches.

* It will be free. No DRM, no restrictions.

TheMonkofDestiny:
that means they have no plans to ship ROMs via steam, only empty tool to load your local ROMs. it won't help you to purchase ROMs via steam I guess?

There's a thread where at least one of the people involved with Retroarch comments on whether they could sell ROMs at some point. The answer is basically what you may expect - if they can work out deals with relevant companies/etc. then they can hopefully make things happen.

Otherwise, it's basically only good for stuff you already have - disc loading for supported systems included.

Well, but also there are a number of ROM-based games already sold on Steam, and for most of them user reviews and guides strongly recommend using a third party emulator for better results.

For instance, if I recall correctly, Sega Mega Drive & Genesis Classics (Sonic, Toejam etc.), Atari Vault (asteroids, breakout etc), etc.

Whenever one buys a game that comes with ROM that is usable with a third party emulator, as far as I know, there is no DRM to be concerned about.
Is retroarch the annoying emulator that forces you to download extra parts through its own program?

I realize I didn't write it all out but my "what you already have" was meant as a blanket statement toward games purchased or otherwise - sold through Steam or any other storefront or acquired through however you might have acquired them (I'm not the fuzz, I don't judge).

The remainder of the response was on point with what was asked and that's if, beyond the normal use of Retroarch, would the people behind it be able to sell ROMs and as someone from their collective stated - always a possibility if they can work out the details.

For me personally, I wouldn't hold out hope for this to mean some gigantic wave of ROMs from different companies is suddenly going wash up for sale on Steam or anywhere else. At best, this is Retroarch trying to expand their brand with the future adoption of Steam features (again, all this is outlined by representatives for Retroarch in the Steam forums).

It would certainly be nice to see companies get on board and start selling ROMs of titles though.

Oh, I agree with all of that.

I thought it was worth a footnote, is all.

DadJoke007: I foresee tons of lazy roms getting "ported" with some achievements and cloud save slapped onto them.
Well, I kinda want to add more rom websites being closed by You-Know-Who...

Hope it doens't get popular, I can imagine EA releasing FIFA 95 with surprise mechanics on it...
Now that I think about it, Roms are popular on handheld devices and no one seem to get them in play store so far.

It probably make sense to anyone but totally agrre, is so anti-intuitive.

I installed launchbox on my nephews pc and is so easy to setup and works great. All his games on one single place.

this topic influenced me to play Fatal Labyrinth from Sega Mega Drive pack. This game is still awesome :) Sega made very lame emulator for their games in that pack, I use mendafen to play it. Feels so great with save/load state, I can't imagine playing these old games and start over and over like it was in the old times.
I'm glad RetroArch makes an attempt to revive old games, maybe it will encourage youngsters to check games from their parent's basement :)
"We want to grow our base and as of this month we have been putting a heavy focus into making sure that RetroArch can run originally bought content on game discs. There are further announcements to follow in the coming weeks, and we are open to dialogue with game developers/publishers that have the rights to original IP who want to bring their games over to Steam through the use of RetroArch*.

This could be BIG, but to eventually bring old roms legally for a few bucks I believe the Steam Workshop cannot make the pass, or else... Too much resources lost in moderating the mess.

I guess that would still be better than the current situation of few ROMs available for legal purchase, though.
YAY!!!!!!

Wait.............seriously??? Paid ROMS via GOG, I could get behind that. But buying them on Steam??? Oh hell no
