Haven't seen Rogue One yet. The prequels do not exist for me.

Ugh.. we did grasp its point, but also its horrible realization.
(RO minor SPOILERS)
I would have frankly preferred another Darth Maul-like Sith, instead of that angry powerful teen (what an underwhelming lame twist).

Teenage Angsty Emo-Darth?

Clue me in: What am I missing? What is the point of that character?

Yeah, I thought Krennic on RO was a bit of a sniveling shit as well but still managed to be menacing enough, as opposed to Kylo Ren. Of course they couldn't make Kylo Ren too much of a bastard because that would ruin his redemption arc in Episodes VIII - IX, if everyone hated him.

Having the sequels a bit too much in mind I think was a bit of the problem with The Force Awakens, and I put the blame squarely on JJ Abrams. Have you ever seen his "Mystery Box" TED Talk? He speaks of crafting stories like a mystery box, to always leave people guessing about stuff. It's the same thing he did with Lost, and in a way it works, it's great for driving up audience engagement, but it's a tool for creating hype, not good stories.

I see this mostly with Rey. She does come off as a Mary Sue in the film, in that she is more skilled in the force, lightsabers, etc, than anyone else for no apparent reason. I imagine there is a reason for her to be like that, we know almost nothing about her past after all, but because Abrams decided to leave that a mystery to be trickled to the audience in later installments, it hurt the character in this movie.

That he's not supposed to be a cool, menacing supervillain like Vader, but a teenage, angsty Emo who is TRYING to appear like a cool menacing supervillain. If the producer would have tried to make a Vader-like character, they only could have failed, because Vader is one of the most iconic characters in movie history. So instead of trying to follow that up with another very dark, serious and threatening villain, that would be compared to Vader, they went in the completely other direction.
That why sentences like "He was so cool until he took of his mask" annoy me so much. He's not supposed to be cool.

I once heard him described as "Prequel-Anakin done right" and I totally agree with that.

The director at the beginning wanted to make Kylo look cool.
Remember the laser scene? I was so hyped about him.
Then the crappy "plot twist" happened.

The mask should have been Kylo's trick to appear cool, but.. what's cooler than being able to use the force like that?
He would have never needed it. Someone isn't respecting you? Just force-kill him. Tadaa.. respect (by fear) immediately gained like Vader.
The mask basically became just a gimmick to deliver the initial twist to the audience.

I think that the director totally screwed up the character.
You can't make a Vader-wannabe, if you give him more powers than the original!

The fact that he is supposed be lame doesn't really help the fact that he is lame :P

Movies like this desperately need effective villains. If not having one was the idea, than it was stupid-ass idea.

I mean for fuck's sake, the movie openly plays him for laughs. There's that scene where throws a hissy fit and two troopers sort of look at each other and go the other way. The TR-8R stormtrooper was more menacing than him. I don't care if it was intentional or not - without a villain worth a damn, when the audience laugh out loud at his scenes (and they did, both times I saw it) there is no tention.

Maybe I'm the only one... but I like Anakin past, and the final battle between him and Obi-Wan Kenobi is awesome.
I agree that the old trilogy is better but I think the new trilogy deserve some love... it's original compared to episode VII and it is not that bad.

Agreed. And I disagree with Disney totally ignoring the prequels even exist.

Whatever gave the idea they are doing that? There is plenty of prequel era leftovers in Rebels (Darth Maul, battle droids, clone troopers), Saw Guerrera from Rouge One is actually a character from the Clone Wars show, they have published comics with prequel era Obi-Wan and Anakin...

Since Disney bought it? I didn't know about Rebels as I don't watch the show, but last I heard they were trying to get the supposed "bad taste" the prequels left out of people's mouths. I just know that from what they've said it's highly unlikely they'll make any movies or games from the Clone Wars era or before.

Yes, in the new Disney canon. Darth "it's just a flesh wound" Maul is even one of the two big villains in the current third season of Rebels. There may be no plans for more movies in the prequel era or games (they barely make any Star Wars games now anyway :P) but, for good or ill, the prequels are still very much canon.

Oh, and while on the subject of Rebels check out this trailer. Even if one does not watch the show, I think it's still a pretty awesome trailer anyway.

Nice! I need to watch Rebels. I watched some of The Clone Wars a while back and liked it. They are planning a lot more games in the future, though more than likely not prequel era. There was a petition a while back to bring The Old Republic to Netflix, similar to what Disney's doing with The Defenders stuff, so maybe...
