Regarding technology becoming dangerous... yeah, I'm not buying it. The whole Pokemon Go/AR freakout is indistinguishable from every other time people start wringing their hands over some development in technology or culture in general. With tech, it's usually some variant on "this is unnatural"; never mind that technology is unnatural by its very nature, yet I don't think anyone is going to make the argument that we should have never used tools as a species. The bit about new technology being dangerous is not necessarily invalid; technical developments such as the atomic bomb, the white phosphorous incendiary shell, and the NSA's Skynet program are nothing short of nightmare fuel. Pokemon Go is neither of those things. It's a smartphone app that doesn't get people hurt in ways different than they already do for similar reasons. Kids are dumbasses with impaired senses of self preservation who require parental supervision to make sure they don't drink bleach or some shit; if a kid gets hurt while playing outside, the real concern is where the fuck was their guardian, as it has always been before Pokemon Go was a thing. Same for people dicking around on their phones while driving; the problem isn't that they were dicking around with a particular app, the problem is that some idiot thought that looking at their tiny handheld computer was more important than focusing on the road.

They need to call it Pokemon STOP!

I saw one of those on the tracking screen once; unfortunately, this was during the first week of the app's launch, so the servers were shitting a hole straight through the bed (more than usual, I mean), and it was gone by the time I could log back in. Lost a perfectly good starting incense in the bargain -_-

Anyhoe, I stuck the game on phone, it finally worked & there were three critter-things surrounding where I was.
One out back, didn't even have to go outside, just pointed camera in that direction, clicked ball. Caught wtf it was.

The three critter-things surrounding you were Charmander, Bulbasaur and Squirtle. They are what are known as "Starter Pokémon", a Pokémon given to you for free at the beginning of the game to get you started on your adventure. Everyone who starts a new game of Pokémon Go will get the same three critter-things, but you only get to choose one. Of course, through playing the game, you can eventually catch the other two.

At this point, your task is to travel around, visit PokéStops (shows as blue circles on your map) and Pokémon Gyms (shown as red, blue, yellow or grey square-shaped buildings), and catch the various Pokémon that you come across along the way. For every Stop you visit and every critter you catch, you will gain experience points and level up, allowing you to catch new and stronger Pokémon. Additionally, once you reach level 5, you can start battling the Pokémon you have caught at Gyms. You will be required to choose one of three teams; Team Mystic (blue/water), Team Valor (red/fire) or Team Impulse (yellow/electricity).
