This really gets my blood boiling, because I cannot understand how hard it can be to fix, after so much time.

Every time the Galaxy client updates, the 'Folders' settings gets reverted to the default.... i don't wanna the download to go there, i want to set my own folders ONCE and be done with it

This has going on since forever, but apparently the latest version is even worse: settings are not persisted when closing the client, and not even when closing the bloody window (the last textbox specifically)... already tried running it with and without administrator rights, checked the config.json file, browsed all the SQLite databases... nothing

Seriously, why?! what so hard about that?
low rated
yep it also cannot be that hard to fix their games and their forum, but gog likes to fuck its customer

As a software developer myself, i would never assume THAT much... forum isses and especially games issues can be problematic, so without knowing all the intricacies, I will always give them the benefit of the doubt.

But here I'm talking about 3 simple text settings in some simple configuration file, so even without knowledge of the Galaxy source code, I can safely assume it can't be that hard...

It doesnt do this here, but stays with the folders I set ... for ages now and on all my machines.

The difficult code here should already be written. As in the code to make sure that the folder it's writing to is appropriate. As long as they're properly validating the folder, they shouldn't need to do anything more than a possible confirmation dialog upon update that you want to use a non-default folder.

I also never had Galaxy reset the folders, unless I manually deleted everything Galaxy related. I'd suggest filing a bug report over at mantis.gog.com, though bug 4779 seems similar to yours.

From what I recall, the settings should be saved in the registry, could it be that something is messing with that, thus why it reverts to the default settings?

Scanned the whole registry, but i didn't find any key with the related values there, so they should be stored elsewhere...

If using 64-bit Windows, the key is
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\GOG.com\GalaxyClient\settings
If using 32-bit Windows, the key should be
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\GOG.com\GalaxyClient\settings
If the parent key (GalaxyClient) isn't there, then check to see if your registry permissions have been messed up somehow.

Tell me if you want screenshots.

I tried reinstalling the client from scratch (uninstall+manual delete), using a different installation folder altogether, and now the keys are there

I still don't understand why that should not be the case before, given that it was the same machine, the same user logged and the same hard disk partition... I don't know, maybe it didn't like the way the folder were too deeply nested, while this time I went for a simpler "E:\GOG Galaxy"

... let's see what happens with the next update, now

Beeing using since launch and I only need to set folder if i do an complete uninstall/reinstall. For me all instalation is default...

If I had to venture a guess, it sounds like you are a borked user account and cant edit the registry strings in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\GOG.com\GalaxyClient\settings

Try launch galaxy as an administrator and set them again then check the key... or rebuild your user account.. maybe you have a virus? If neither work I would reinstall windows because your system is having issues writing and maintaining registry settings... and that's a far deeper issue you don't want to mess with.

The download folder setting was the first thing I changed after install as I dont want things installed on my smaller Windows 10 C:\ partition except for drivers. I just went and checked to be sure. Its as I left it: D:\User\Programs\GOG Galaxy.

I do however have a problem with Windows 10 reverting some of my settings back to default after an update... buts thats a whole other thread topic right there.

No, user account is fine; i have full access to the registry, and a complete reinstall under the same user was able to write the keys just fine; problem is elsewere... previous Galaxy versions also saved the settings just fine and they stayed there, so again they were written fine, but they were reverted every time the auto-update kicked in
