fables22: I'm really not sure how much of a difference that would make.
The difference would be that you wouldn't find a mess that ran its course completely unmoderated for 3 days. People here are learning fast. They know that there's no moderation on the weekends.

Well, I guess if someone keeps breaking the rules they won't just keep getting warnings or 24 hour bans, but will get more and more severe punishments, including a permanent ban. So it's not like this is going to go on forever in a weekly cycle.
Good stuff. You don;t have to watch, but listening in the background is awesome.

I guess we are getting ahead of ourselves here.
That's ok... Playtonic doesn't deserve his dulcet tones, nor my money!

dtgreene: Actually, in this case, efficient use of resources means targeting crime prevention efforts at the areas where crime has actually occurred more often.
avatar
Starmaker: That's racist. Even the dumb data science for babbies book got it right. No one knows where crime actually occurred more often, there's only data on arrests / charges / convictions. There's no other data to extrapolate from. If the system is racist, disadvantaged people are arrested, charged AND convicted more often, which means more policing. Meanwhile, because resources are finite, cops harass other people less, which means less crime.

Efficient use of resources means doing things which provably reduce future damage from crime. With corruption and racism and sadistic perverts everywhere, this is difficult to assess.

Bookwyrm627: Charging more for insurance: This is all about identifying where the payouts are more likely to occur (or larger).
avatar
Starmaker: Then, what insurance is even for? If companies are allowed to subdivide pools to hypothetically pinpointing my payouts with perfect accuracy, why do I even need a middleman grifter between me and the payment recipient?
Exactly! Insurance pools were originally intended for the benefit of society, not to make vultures and parasites into a pseudo-elite "royalty" that thinks it's earned the right to rule with absolute authority.

As for policing, cops are just gun-toting goons who serve the corrupt politicians who write their paychecks, meaning they serve the aforementioned scum that own the politicians, paid for with the wealth they've leeched from those who actually produce.

So what type of person allows theirself to be robbed in this fashion? A slave, and not just any slave -- a willing slave. A person born and raised to serve unquestioningly that which has not the tiniest shred of decency or legitimacy: something that is so rotten at it's core that it is only technically a human being, having long since mortgaged it's humanity so that it could obtain something that no true human being desires to have -- power over others.

Of course, maybe they aren't learning. :P
Obviously some people don't want to wait for the weekend.

The problem with local police is that they're primarily accountable to outside authorities. Law enforcement should be accountable to the community they work in. It makes sense to reserve the right to use force for only a few of the community members to avoid a chaotic stupid free-for-all, but the obligations those people have to take on to balance out the extra rights should be to the community they're authorized to use the force in. Citizens are not subjects.

(Note: this is not a dig at GOG moderation. We can choose not to use GOG's private forum and not suffer for it much because it's small. People, especially those suffering from totalitarian police, can't choose to move somewhere better -- "better" is in higher demand and therefore more expensive.)

(Note 2: but this is a critique of Facebook, because at this point it's essentially an utility. People shouldn't be denied running water because they said a naughty word, even if they signed a "yes, you can deny me running water if I say a naughty word" contract.)

It may surprise you, but it's actually fully possible, and in fact easy and in no way inconvenient to live without facebook. Shocking, I know. Hope you were sitting down :D

Totally agree with you on this. At present, UOF guidelines are precisely what you'd expect to find in authoritarian states.

Maybe in Poland. Here in the USA not having Facebook means no job. No job means no food. No food means you die. It drives me nuts that I'm required to have a Facebook account as a condition of employment - not officially mind you but not having one apparently means you're hiding something. I have one - I just don't post anything on it. I'm nice and boring thank you.

I will go on a limb and say you have a job in PR or a job that deals with the public in some sort of news/journalism/media capacity tor a job in sales/marketing or a job in some capacity that is used to generate interest or reach customers. I don't have any social media accounts and I am not required to have any.

No it doesn't. :P

I run a wildly successful B&B. Prior to that I was a manager of a bookstore.

I have never and will never have Facebook.

I also don't have a cell phone so let me stop anyone from bringing that up right now. XD
