Why not PS1? :P

PookaMustard: The current state of PS2 emulation on the PC is sad. Like, very sad. Here I am with a Core i7 and a Nvidia GTX840m and what, I can't run GTA Liberty City Stories at the framerate the game was designed to run at, even at the indented resolution?
Oh, I don't know if it's as bad as all that. PCSX2 has run everything I've tried just fine. Emulators can always be improved and fine-tuned, though. I just wish someone would get a freaking Xbox emulator working at all. Now that would be something...

When you can't emulate a game at the proper framerate in the regular resolution of the console on what would be top hardware, it must be very sad to think of emulation.

Ironically, the same system has little troubles running Wii games besides Sonic Unleashed.
Their Artisan-mentality toward business are killing themselves, so now they are scrambling to cover their a$$es. But on the other hand they haven't completely given up on their ways of thinking yet, so we get these sort of stop-gap compromises for now.

Will it work? We'll see. v=_=v

...do you add Backwards compaibility to PS2 and NOT PS3 games :P

And now that whole HD updating of PS2 games for PS3 was all for naught :P
Let's hope ps2 games work flawlessly which is probably not going to happen. Expect ps3 emulation in 20 years.
Emulation =/= backwards compatibility. For that you'd need to be able to put PS2 discs in your PS4 and run them as if they were native. This is more like a GOG-esque emulator-enabled downloadable.

If anything, this might somehow get the PS4 another selling point, is that its backwards compatible with these PS2 games, and properly. As for, err PS3 games, guess we'll have to wait. But I've got a PS2 so there's nothing to be gained here for me.
Hmmm... With that setup, and PCSX2, this game and almost any really should run at 100% speed easily, at x4 native for 1080p too!

On topic, this seems to announce... PS Store Ps2 Classics will soon carry over to the Ps4, as they are currently only playable on Ps3.

Still, original, outdated Ps2 resolution is a mess on HDTV, but nice new feature incoming.

I doubt anyone's playing a PS2 game on 1080p at 100% speed. I could believe that happening with the Wii, but not the PS2. Hell, even my dual-core mid-ranger runs Wii games at full speed at the native resolution, while it can't run a PS2 game properly. I'd chalk it up to the emulator, which is PCSX2.

Heh, it really is, or any SD content for that matter. I'll try and keep that SD TV from being sold just so I don't have ruined graphics in media that isn't in HD, moreso movies... especially the VHS tapes I've got!

I have speed issues with games i try to play, but those are usually 3D titles (Dark Cloud 2, as an example) while other titles work just fine (FF12, Ar Tonelico, Ys games, Mana Khemia, Disgaea, etc).

As for Xbox emulation, it's effectively just pulling the OS out and patching it and running it via VirtualBox or something, since it's x86 architecture and a subset of the Windows NT kernel. So the full fledged emulator isn't necessary.
Sadly, this is more like a fast-food remaster technology than a proper backwards compatibility, since the "emulated" games will have trophy support (that can't come from nowhere, they had to actually modify the games to allow that):

So don't expect physical disc support, you'll have to pay again....

Hmmm.... I am using the latest development builds, they probably have seen a major improvement since the long last stable 1.2.1, maybe? Odd, I had good to great results with this emulator for some years.

Here :

http://pcsx2.net/download/development.html

You need to install the Visual C++ 2015 redist (x86) to run these builds.

Ps2 Bios online are "illegal", copyrighted material but if you do own the console, you can find ways to extract it, or to "safely" download it somewhere, I guess... Be careful with the source!

My rig is quite similar to yours, i7 4790K, GTX 970 and 16GB RAM. Windows 10 OS.

I assure you, I have just got PCSX2 set up again yesterday for my little niece to play Simpsons Hit & Run and.... Barbie and the 12 Princesses.... And I have played a good hour of Silent Hill 3, too.

They all run really well at 100% speed, as shown on the top border of the emulation window.

Here are the very few changes from default setttings in configuration I use, if I do not mention any particular setting that mean I left them untouched :

Core GS :

- Window mode screen, set to widescreen 16/9 instead of 4/3.
- Speedhacks screen, set MTVU on to benefit from multi threading processing.

Plugin :

- Adapter, search for your graphic card in the menu.
- Renderer, OpenGL hardware for the most accurate emulation.
- Internal resolution to 4x native for the best image quality on a monitor / TV running at 1080p with the lesser impact on the hardware and performance.
- Anisotropic filter to x16.
- CRC hack level to Partial (recommended for OpenGL)
- Enable Hardware Depth, and Accurate Date.

(Optional) Software mode settings, enable Edge AA and 16 rendering threads, in case it is necessary to use this mode (F9 on keyboard) during occasional rendering glitches.

Apply, enjoy.

Also, NVIDIA control panel or to be sure, NVIDIA Inspector to enable Triple buffering + forced V-Sync can help performance.

You can find on YouTube plenty movies showing the emulator in action, like this one :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9SycHpHO8E

This is proper full speed emulation, the problem with this footage is Direct3D 9, 10 or 11 renderer removing the very particular grain of this game image making it "clean", heresy for a Silent Hill game, if you own the 2 or the 3, or the 4th game of this series and can start, use an ISO of them, please try using OpenGL and settings I shared above, see what I mean by most accurate emulation of the Ps2 in HD, for the most games supported... :)

Second comment you wrote yes.... SD output on HD device is ruined by "definition"!!

On topic, I am quite positive this may well be, Ps2 Classics playable on the Ps4 simply, and I wish, why not, PsOne Classics will follow.

The ps3 is an entirely different beast owing to the cell architecture that it espouses unlike the MIPS architecture used in the ps2. Ps3 Emulation would be exceedingly difficult on even the most powerful x86 machines let alone the ps4 (which also happens to be x86).

Emulating a ps2 is already possible on x86 machines and it is a tad bit surprising that this feature was not made available earlier.

nightcraw1er.488: Its about the only impressive thing with Nintendo, that I can play Cube games on the WII.
That's because when Nintendo claims backwards compatibility, it's usually at a hardware level. To their credit, I've never heard of them describing the Virtual Console as backwards compatibility. But yeah, it's no secret that the Wii basically had a GameCube in it and the DS had a GBA in it.

Ah. So in other words, Sony are doing a 'Virtual Console' and calling it backwards compatibility. :/
