I purchased this game through gog but I cannot get it to load on my phone. Anybody know how I can rectify this? I want this old game not just for nostalgia, but because nothing comes close to its greatness.

sadly since the version of Wc2 sold on GOG is the B.net edition and not the dos version there is no easy way to do so.

The more pressing question would be: WHY would you want to?

To answer the question, there's no way to play the gog version on a smartphone.

Interesting, but you misinterpreted my rhetorical question.
I wasn't puzzled about how to install & run War2, more like baffled about how to play it effectively on a small screen and without any way to do hotkeys.
I played Wesnoth on a phone, but that's turn based.. War2 is realtime!

By using an 'On-The-Go' cable (or adapter) and connecting a USB splitter, one can then plugin a mouse and keyboard to an Android phone or tablet. As Android has mouse and keyboard functionality built in.

Maybe you can play it with Exagear (Wine port for Android) or proot with Linux. But gameplay quality might end up being sub-optimal, as well as there being different implementations for different hardwares and Android versions.
