The free <span class="bold">Shadwen Demo</span>, where you can try out your silent killing techniques in a bleak medieval environment, is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, DRM-free on GOG.com.

Time stands still, as Shadwen lurks behind a dark corner, wishing that the little girl cowering beside her didn't have to witness the brutal scene that is about to unfold. But maybe she won't. Perhaps there is another way to get past these guards, climb on that scaffold and continue on her mission to assassinate the king. Before you take any action time stands still, allowing you to change plans on the spot and even rewind failed attempts. Killing might not be necessary, as long as Shadwen manages to stay hidden.

In anticipation of the stealth-action game, where you move freely among the shadows of a gritty medieval setting, developers Frozenbyte are releasing the <span class="bold">Shadwen Demo</span> and GOG.com is jumping in on the action! You will have the opportunity to sample Shadwen's light-footed scaling and stealth-assassination mechanics in a fully-playable area of the game and win awesome prizes in the process. The demo will be available on our store between February 24th and February 29th but, once added, you will be able to access it from your GOG.com library forever. All individual scores of those playing the demo will contribute to a global community score; the higher the global tally, the lower Shadwen's launch price will be. Head <span class="bold">here</span> for more details.

GOG.com CONTEST
We decided to do something extra for all the GOGers out there who want to try the free demo, so we are launching our own parallel contest where you must lunge #fromtheshadows for a chance to win awesome Shadwen swag!

The basics:
—Grab the <span class="bold">Shadwen Demo</span> and reach the end of the level without raising alarms, suspicions, or your blade against the guards. Staying hidden earns you more points.
—Screenshot the stat screen: Complete the demo level scoring as many points as you can, then post the image(s) below or tweet them at <span class="bold">twitter/GOGcom</span> with the "#fromtheshadows @GOGcom" tags.
—Grab sweet swag: The 10 highest-scoring assassins will get a Shadwen t-shirt and a free copy of Shadwen, courtesy of Frozenbyte. In case more than 10 entries are tied for the top spots, their submissions will enter a raffle.

So put on your soft leather gloves, don your darkness-colored robes, and exercise your rope-throwing: unsung glory and awesome prizes await!
The event will last until February 29th. Winners will be announced in the forums soon afterwards.

Contest Winners Announced!
The winners are in!

Due to an in-game bug making it impossible to do an undetected + no kill run worth 1600 points, there was a bit of confusion about eligible entries. To make things fair, we considered both the never-detected runs (1100 points) and kill-everyone runs (1110 points) to be eligible for the grand prizes — but with no more than one entry per person.

Since there were more than 10 eligible entries, we ran a raffle powered by the random number generator at random.org

And the winners are:
RabidGears
Goatbrush
w0lf1k
LiefLayer
Sablelune
Aningan
Aceso
Pixelion
GothaBlutauge
@Asaldar_

Thanks for playing Shadwen on GOG! We'll be reaching out to the winners individually to get your T-Shirt sizes and addresses. In the meantime... stay hidden, friends.

MorphysLaw: This game is pretty cool. I was a bit annoyed that at certain times I *had* to kill guards to make Lily progress (there was only one guard--the first one in the inside part--that I had to kill just to make him not notice me), and the AI isn't great at times (guards not seeing you unless you are within their 90 degree vision sometimes, other times hearing the slightest footstep, or Lily going back and forth a lot). Overall though, I quite like it, especially the way the grappling hook handles! That just felt great in its use, and the fact that time stops when you're not pressing any buttons makes it even better. The time stopping is a little annoying sometimes when you just want to walk around a little (it'd be great if there'd be an option to make the stealth button a toggle for several reasons).

Are traps going to be acquired only outside of missions, or also during missions? Is there going to be a nonlethal "sleeping dart" version of the poison dart trap? Are guards going to be able to capture Lily (and thereby causing a game over)?

I liked the aesthetics of the game and the characters and thought they looked good and gritty (though they could use more polish--the lighting doesn't always seem to do them favours), especially Shadwen herself, whose design is also very practical (braids > ponytail > loose, when it comes to stealth and combat). I was confused about some of the controls that weren't explained in the tutorial video or easily deduced via the controls menu, like how to de-attach the rope from things after it got attached.

I sadly wasn't able to get more than 450 points even on a second, more careful run, simply because I had to kill so many guards to make Lily progress at all. Are there any ways of distracting the guards from their post without alerting them, or are there alternate paths for Lily?

.

EDIT: Dangit! How do you take a screenshot of a fullscreen game? When I try to Alt+Prtsc or Ctrl+Prtsc it takes a screenshot of whatever is there if I Alt-Tab, rather than the game. I can't seem to play the game in a window either.

Right when I got 1110 too. :(
You can toggle time to flow normally, but it's not preassigned to a button. I bind it to Z for convenience, though sometimes it takes a while for it to work.

Have you tried just pressing PRTSC? On its own. That's what I did.

With the grappling hook, the way scrolling the mousewheel loosens or tightens the rope, I would like if that could be used to pull boxes and stuff over. I don't like having to walk to do that, I tend to get spotted when that happens.
Alas, countless attempts at the elusive 1110 have failed miserably, as have my chances of receiving the game as a gift... :[

I wish someone could tell me what I was doing wrong, having killed all of them without a single one going yellow dozens of times, to come to a bare minimum of 2 "Cautious Guards"... I wish I knew which those 2 were, at least, but as it stands it's mere speculation and after spending more hours at this than I dare to admit, I ingloriously surrender my arms... :|

However, guiding Lily to the end without killing anyone was extremely easy, hence I will submit that result at least (1100), having achieved it on the very first run, as most probably have. And I do cherish the opportunity to enhance my cunning in order to kill all guards with only 2 "phantom" guards becoming "Cautious". ;)

A most interesting game that suits my taste perfectly! :)

Thank you, GOG + Frozenbyte!!! :D

stevieknix: I have gameplay mechanics that are supposed to allow me to get a friendly AI past some enemy AI. The enemy AI should, therefore, respond to those mechanics, but they aren't. That is a problem. That is the game not working properly.

When I create a distraction it should distract those guards, that is why it's there.
Generally I believe that the metal rat thing is working as intended, it's just a bit tricky to to use. If you place it properly, and once it enters the guards' line of sight (or maybe even if they hear it), they 'll start following it around. Now the noise it makes may not be that loud so the guards hear it and they need to at least take a glimpse at it in order to chase it. Of course there comes the question, "should the guard have heard that?" and I mean it depends. The level we were given it was pretty dark, the guards seemed sleepy (or drank? I don't know) and so you can say it's justified if they miss the rat's sound. I have to say from my experience it worked like a charm every time I needed it. I mean there was even a time when it started running around and attracted the attention of 4-5 guards. Now to return to the tricky part I am saying in the beginning, placement is really important, and also I should note that if it goes directly on their feet they 'll just break it and won't give extra time to "investigate" further (all things considered maybe they should).

I had an issue while trying to screenshot the game as well with Print Screen, it just gave me a screenshot of my desktop, but I tried Fraps and worked. The screenshots are saved as bitmap tho and they are pretty big (about 5mb each), but you can resize the screenshots via paint and save them as .jpeg for a lower size.
Guard #1: "Did you hear something?"
<Big ass explosion right next to them>
Guard #2: "I didn't hear anything!"

:-D
ok 3 hours left... and game price launch is 16 dollars!! A really good price for my taste.
I also tried my best and I was able to get both the 1100 without killing and 1110 with everybody killed.

Greets.

ok I worked hard to get 4 run as fast as possible to make + points.

3 of 4 were never detected + killed everyone run. this is my last demo 4 times run for fun:

get killed everyone+ never detected is really too easy when you know what to do... in the 3 run I alerted 1 guards at the beginning...

Final launch price is 14.55 dollars

MorphysLaw: it'd be great if there'd be an option to make the stealth button a toggle
avatar
phaolo: Actually, there is a "toggle time" key in the options.
Well, I meant stealth as a toggle specifically, because then you also don't have to hold that button the whole time.

avatar
phaolo: For the screenshot, I had to select "run in full window" in the options (as wisely suggested by another gogger).
Thanks. I tried that, and it somewhat worked. I guess Windows 10 doesn't really want to work with me here. Screenshot is attached, but the score is cut off. :( Shows all the other parts that are relevant to the score, though. Had to make it smaller, because the original screenshot was four times the size that the GOG upload allows.

You can save it as a .jpg instead of .png to get a smaller sized file.
I'm curious which 10 of the 21x1110 point people have won.

Don't forget it was possible to post to twitter too. There was total 276 never-detect people which is prerequisite to top score, but that was across all services that took part in that event. GOG share for this contest should be smaller. How much - no idea.

All the 1110 points I saw killed guards though.

The devs should giveaway another copy just for the pacifist route, because that was the main objective and it was bugged :\

Fine with me :)

I had 25-detect pacifist playthrough, I think I saw someone else post 23. I should be good either way.

But 1110 is the highest score.
reach the end of the level without raising alarms, suspicions, or your blade against the guards. Staying hidden earns you more points.
You can't finish the demo without killing anyone + no suspicions. Neither can you do it with no suspicions with no guards killed. Since it's the highest points, I'd say 1110 wins. But if it's the 1100, I did that as well.
