Rockstar would make a great pirate game. I know you PC players are still angry about GTA4, you should give them another chance. A long list of classics from Rockstar games I would not give up for anything.

Risen 2
Sid Meier's Pirates! is mindnumbingly excellent! It is so so much fun! The first time I got really lucky right off the bat by running into a Ship of the Line. You can finish the entire game without once coming across that magnificent ship!

Oh yes absolutely. But I'd rather see them make a Bully sequel. There aren't nearly enough games like it. Not games a bout bullies, but games about a kid's over the top adventures in a school&surrounding-town setting.

They have had plenty of chances. GTA5 is DRM'd up to its salty balls and linked to all their R* social shite. No, I am afraid they have long since ruined their chance

It's not just PC players that should have been angry about GTA 4. It just wasn't any good. Jumping through their DRM hoops for the best part of an hour beforehand only served to emphasise that.

It was a bit like being strip searched to get into a Jedward gig - after being lied to by every reviewer out there who swears blind that Jedward are the hottest thing out there and will change your life forever. Only they're shit.

KoreaBeat: Still waiting for a pirate-themed FTL-like.
Oh yes please! It might be a bit more complicated. But that could be compensated for by having a 'issue orders while paused' feature or something.

Ahoy, this topic is much to my liking! :)

Besides the aforementioned games Ghost Pirates of Voojoo Island is really similar to the Monkey Island series, while another adventure game is Captain Morgane and the Golden Turtle.

And the Terraria-like Pixel Piracy could also be mentioned.

There is/was a try with Seaworthy as a combination of FTL and Sid Meier's Pirates. After the unsuccessful Kickstarter campaign I do not know if the devs finish the game.
My faves have been:

Sid Meier's Pirates! (first played on the C64, but the new version is good too. Get a map of the Caribbean to play)
Assassin's Creed Black Flag
Risen 2

I don't remember specifics, but I know Neverwinter Nights had some good pirates modules.

Edit: I forgot about Napster! :-P

Risen 2 is good pirate game
and ofcourse Sid Meier's pirates, the best pirate game ever made
Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales and Age of Pirates 2: City of the Abandoned Ships. And CoAS does have a well maintained mod.
Just finished watching Treasure Island (1989 with Charlton Heston) with my son and he was delighted. He loves pirate themes and Sid Meier's Pirates (the new version) is the game he plays most and the one he comes back to.
Can't you conduct pirate activities in the whole X series?

Wow, I can't believe I didn't think of that one. That used to be a favourite of mine when I was younger. I would love to see it come to GOG, maybe with the multiplayer intact, along with more Monolith games in general.
