tfishell: I'm not a fan of this type of sale either which is why GOG simply isn't getting any of my money.
avatar
Austrobogulator: Yeah, I'm not into the whole idea of gambling-style sale gimmicks. I can't bring myself to pay $3 for a chance of getting a game that I have zero interest in or that I already have elsewhere.

On top of that, I'm very particular about the games in my library - I try to only have games that I genuinely intend to play.
i think these things are kinda funny to do, 3 or 4 or so, like the mutator promo, i dont hate them, no one forces us to do it :D

well i was so curious that i forgot that i have all the games i like in the indie category that GoG currently has, there are load of indie games i would like to see on GoG cause i like them, but maybe someday these will arrive here aswell.

as for this line:

" On top of that, I'm very particular about the games in my library - I try to only have games that I genuinely intend to play."

Well this makes me turn red, kinda out of shame, i must confes, when i started here and on other games sites i also planned i would buy what i would intend to play (turns even more red off shame) but.........

things in life dont go always as planned, more then ever it goes the other way.
Anyways, i might have some games that i am able to play
( dont contain 3d lightningeffects, weird noises, distorted graphics/voices, weird motions)
but dont seem to be playing these because well in all the excitement you sometime buy, ehm certain games at 1 bucks at sales and then you kinda seldom or never play them because your playing commandos or fallout for the 5000th time , but the fallout games stay cool)

so you cant always get exactly what you want, but thats life.

but i did ask support if they could turn the shadowwarrior 2013, jazzpunk, dust:elysian tail and legend of grimlock into a giftcode.
so i can trade it or if else fails give it so the game will get played instead of 'collecting virtual dust' on my GoG shelves.
So all i can do is wait and hope for the best.

hedwards: I don't object to different, I object to the abusive nature of it. They've had some wonderful sales over the years, but they've gotten progressively more abusive over time and I've gotten to the point now where I refuse to buy anything during these kinds of sales. I'm probably one of the few that does, but I'm not about to encourage this kind of ridiculousness.

I liked the idea between that timeline sale, I hated the fact that you had to be up all night and stay home from work to make the most of it. It really should have had a period at the end where you could pick up the games you might have missed for a discount though.

natronosaurus: I probably would have bought 5 of them if they were implemented in a better way.

grimwerk: Got a specific better way in mind?
Have the randomness of it limited to stuff you have on your wishlist with a much smaller chance of getting a gift code for a game you already own. That way, you won't get something you have no interest in and the possibility of getting something that you can trade for something else (to enhance community-ness).
avatar
hedwards: Of course it's exploitive, to some extent all sales are. The ones they've been running though are far worse than anything I've seen elsewhere. Expecting people to take off from work and not sleep for the Insomnia and time machine sales was ridiculous.
avatar
bler144: Personally I thought Insomnia was fantastic. It was also very effective at draining my wallet, but fortunately coincided with my birthday.

Considering they run "normal" sales nearly every weekend and often during the week, it seems a bit ...myopic, perhaps...to call them out for doing something different with 3-5% of the days in the year, even if some of those experiments don't work, or at least don't work for a particular individual.

I don't have the inclination for gambling to participate in the Pinata as designed, but I don't think they suck for attempting it, since they'll almost certainly be back to 'normal' sales soon after this one ends. And as some of the jokes above note, we're not coerced or forced into participating, are we?
" Personally I thought Insomnia was fantastic. It was also very effective at draining my wallet, but fortunately coincided with my birthday. "

beautiful line

i had to buy a new wallet, the old one was all torn up, and worn out, it could not stand the pounding it got during the insomnia, fall and wintersales, so it retired with a sort of medal of bravery and all the scarves it got during the euro battering sales :D

You mean as opposed to the Samoan male problems currently plaguing Russia?

hedwards: Insomnia was worse because they were giving away a tiny number of free games and the next time was definitely going to be the time you got it.
I forget about the freebies. They were probably compelling to people who are easily compelled.

budejovice: The only $3 game on gog is not a pinata possibility.
avatar
hedwards: I stand corrected, didn't the OP say that the game he got was only $2 at the present? It seemed odd to me, but having the minimum value the same as the pinata price seems a lot more reasonable.
Yeah, OP was hyperbolic and technically wildly incorrect. I assume they didn't value the game highly themselves, but definitely was't the sticker price.

I like the thought. How do you prevent users from gaming the system? That is, can't I adjust my wishlist to exactly what I want to receive, perhaps to a single game?

Myself, I'd like to see pools of available games. Each pool would include 5 or 6 possible games. When buying a pinata, I'd have to select pool A, B, or C, and I'd randomly receive a game from that group. I think choice makes the randomness feel more controlled to a buyer, and they'll be more likely to participate. Also, choice makes the buyer feel more responsible for what he or she receives, and less likely to complain about a result.

Of course, GOG should select better names than A, B, C, and perhaps modify the random selection to accommodate already owned games.

I mean conditional probability. I'm not a frequentist.

Ok, let's say that the pinata is weighted towards your wishlist. Let's say, a 65% chance for a wishlist game, a 25% chance for a randomly selected "other" game, and a 10% chance for a game you already one. Yes, you'd have a better chance of getting something you want, but it's not totally guaranteed.

Gotcha. Seems sensible enough to me.

Frequentist? Is this a word now? You have to keep me appraised, I'm getting a bit old and out of touch with the fancy things kids say these days.

It's been a word for quite some time. So you're not old, you're just a country bumpkin counting on his toes.

Lost one to a farming accident in '86. No wonder all my math problems always end in 9.

sherringon456: To the OP,I don't even know how they work, as I was so underwhelmed by the games initially on offer. Indies, Which usually are adventure games or platformers(2 of the 4 genres I have no interest in.) and mystery games (Another genre which I have no interest in.). If one pinata only gives one game then it is poorly implemented if it gives you a game which would cost less if you just bought it from the store. Even when better games come on sale (The the time gap between deals is also too wide imo.), I still probably won't get a pinata because of the randomness.
avatar
JDelekto: As an aside, which type of game holds your interest? I do like adventure games, but I find platform games don't hold my interest as well as others --however, some geniuses manage to make them interesting.

I think RPGs really grew on me, but then when it came to sandbox type games like Saint's Row 3rd, etc, really filled some of the void for venting.

I wish they had it here, but Gary's Mod (of course using Valve's engine) was the best sandbox I could find.
Main ones:
Strategy (Mainly RTS)
RPG
FPS or TPS
Action Adventure
will at least have a go at everything apart from Adventure, Platform, certain types of shooter, walking simulator, mystery and puzzler. Should have said I didn't like 5 or 6 genres, depending on if you consider different types of shooter a different genre.

Sales like this depend upon the fact that people don't have infinite will power to trick them into buying games they might not otherwise be willing to spend money on.

As far as gambling goes I'm not sure that this is even legal. The pinatas are literally gambling. You might get what you paid, you might not and you might get more than you paid. It shouldn't be possible to wind up paying more for a game through the pinata than if you bought it outright.

Strictly speaking participating in this sale might well be a class C felony making it similar in punishment for possessing child pornography or torturing animals.
You are joking, right? You have to be. I'm just going to operate on the assumption you are. Ha ha! Good one, hedwards! Had me going for a moment there...

That doesn't work on GOG. GOG can take your money just fine from two half credit cards.
