JDelekto: I'll tell you this, they promised to give me a game or a gift code for $3.00, it's usually much less than what people spend on coffee these days. I ended up with the Blackwell Bundle, a very decent package which I already owned.

If you were to buy it outright it would be $9.99, so I believe there was truth in their advertising. So, if someone is willing to forego their coffee one morning for a bundle of adventure games (if you like games like Sierra's King's Quest), then you still got something!

I will be gifting this code as I already own it. However, I wanted to point out that giving out games within that price point is an interesting idea; however, I would like to know a) exactly what list of games they are choosing from their pool; and b) what they are using as their random number generator. :)
To answer the first part of your question (what games)
Although some games seem to be "limited" and sell out but sometimes get restocked at some point.

To the OP,I don't even know how they work, as I was so underwhelmed by the games initially on offer. Indies, Which usually are adventure games or platformers(2 of the 4 genres I have no interest in.) and mystery games (Another genre which I have no interest in.). If one pinata only gives one game then it is poorly implemented if it gives you a game which would cost less if you just bought it from the store. Even when better games come on sale (The the time gap between deals is also too wide imo.), I still probably won't get a pinata because of the randomness.

Thanks for that, but all those I see listed are already on my shelf, so it seems that anything I probably take a chance at on the sale is probably a good game I can gift to others'.

There will be a new set of random games starting Monday morning, but until then, this is the list.
My view:

"Buy some random games that if they haven't already been in a $1 Humble Bundle tier then they most likely will be pretty soon, along with 4 other games."

No thank you.
Of the one I purchased, I still don't know whether I'm disappointed or not with the promo overall. You're (at best) guaranteed to get a game that's worth more than you spent but at the same time you're left with the high possibility that it's a game you might not ever play (for any number of reasons) or, if you're a person juggling multiple digital game libraries across different services/etc. then you might be getting saddled with something you've previously acquired elsewhere. Thankfully, in the last two scenarios the refund system here can be a real bacon-saver.
I don't like gimmicky sales, and the idea of buying something blind seems just silly to me. Thankfully there is a "normal" part of the sale too, so maybe there will be something interesting there. It's just a pity it takes so long for the new deals to come.

As an aside, which type of game holds your interest? I do like adventure games, but I find platform games don't hold my interest as well as others --however, some geniuses manage to make them interesting.

I think RPGs really grew on me, but then when it came to sandbox type games like Saint's Row 3rd, etc, really filled some of the void for venting.

I wish they had it here, but Gary's Mod (of course using Valve's engine) was the best sandbox I could find.

hedwards: Of course it's exploitive, to some extent all sales are. The ones they've been running though are far worse than anything I've seen elsewhere. Expecting people to take off from work and not sleep for the Insomnia and time machine sales was ridiculous.
Personally I thought Insomnia was fantastic. It was also very effective at draining my wallet, but fortunately coincided with my birthday.

Considering they run "normal" sales nearly every weekend and often during the week, it seems a bit ...myopic, perhaps...to call them out for doing something different with 3-5% of the days in the year, even if some of those experiments don't work, or at least don't work for a particular individual.

I don't have the inclination for gambling to participate in the Pinata as designed, but I don't think they suck for attempting it, since they'll almost certainly be back to 'normal' sales soon after this one ends. And as some of the jokes above note, we're not coerced or forced into participating, are we?

budejovice: That's on anyone that actually seriously thought not sleeping or skipping work was a good idea. I mean, really...
Well, the point there is that it's a decision that people have to make. If you do go to sleep or work, you can miss out on the deal you wanted. During the Time line promo, the only game that I wanted in the entire promo happened during that first day before I woke up.

Insomnia was worse because they were giving away a tiny number of free games and the next time was definitely going to be the time you got it.

hedwards: It shouldn't be possible to wind up paying more for a game through the pinata than if you bought it outright.
avatar
budejovice: The only $3 game on gog is not a pinata possibility.
I stand corrected, didn't the OP say that the game he got was only $2 at the present? It seemed odd to me, but having the minimum value the same as the pinata price seems a lot more reasonable.

Minimum value is $9.99, so a guaranteed 70% discount. I'm sure the OP is complaining that some of these games may have been cheaper then $3 in Steam bundles or Humble promos...

I don't object to different, I object to the abusive nature of it. They've had some wonderful sales over the years, but they've gotten progressively more abusive over time and I've gotten to the point now where I refuse to buy anything during these kinds of sales. I'm probably one of the few that does, but I'm not about to encourage this kind of ridiculousness.

I liked the idea between that timeline sale, I hated the fact that you had to be up all night and stay home from work to make the most of it. It really should have had a period at the end where you could pick up the games you might have missed for a discount though.
