While I think the price of many digital games is bloated, I think the price for Pillars is fine. Since there are three editions, a buyer can pick and choose the one that best suits them. I personally chose the Champion Edition, which for $29.99 I thought was a good deal, especially considering the content. I could have bought the Hero Edition, which in my opinion, I think is a fantastic price for the content the game has to offer, but since I am a fanboy of these type of games, I decided to get a little more.

So when it comes to Pillars, I disagree that the game is too pricey, especially considering the sale price (or reg price), the choice between three editions and the content given, but in general, there are many digital games that cost too much; it's just that Pillars isn't one of those games.

If it's too pricey for you, just wait a year or two for the 'Complete Edition'. With expansions and at a lower price.

CharlesGrey: The production, shipping/handling of physical units is definitely at least in part what made them more expensive, even without the inclusion of optional extras. ( Which were also common back then, especially in PC game boxes. )

Digital distribution is a lot more straightforward and cost efficient, which is why I still refuse to pay the same for a purely digital release as I would have for a traditional physical copy.
That still drives me crazy after all these years. Even now I bet I can pop on Amazon and… yep, there it is, a physical edition for less cash.

There will always be people who find the price of any particular game as being too expensive for their own expectations/value/judgment/economic conditions etc. of course. More realistically though games are priced exactly at what the marketplace values them at as a whole. If a game is truly overpriced compared to what the entire target audience thinks it is worth then it wont sell very well, and the publisher wont bring in the bacon. If that happens and they want the product to be profitable then they end up needing to lower the price to boost interest and stimulate consumer interest. No matter what a game's initial market price is they all go through this process and eventually the number of people buying it at the initial asking price drops. They use sales to re-stimulate interest in the game, but the regular price remains the same until even the sales promotions do not result in enough revenue generation and they're forced to lower the base retail price. They'll continue to drop the price over time to maximize revenue at whatever interest level remains, and most games reach a minimum plateau level beyond which they wont drop the price any further.

Highly successful major AAA titles seem to hold their higher prices the longest, some never dropping the initial asking price for years on end. Others do well but interest slowly declines over time and they end up dropping the prices. The same is true with indie games of course too, although their initial asking prices tend to be lower than games from bigger shops. Ultimately though pricing is set based on predicted interest in a given title, and then adjusted afterward based on how well the game makes money and that's affected by how well it is received by gamers.

What I've found is that if a game seems to be greatly overpriced, it is a matter of individual perception only, because it is the wider marketplace that ultimately decides what a game is worth in terms of price. If a game is high priced for a long period of time, then it must be selling very well and the publisher has no compelling reason to lower the base retail price.

With respect to Pillars of Eternity, there is a huge cult market for Dungeons and Dragons style games out there, in particular right here on GOG. It is rare for games of that style and size/completeness to be produced nowadays, so when one comes along the die hard D&D enthusiasts among us trip over ourselves to grab it up, whether buying it full-retail or when seasonal sales etc. come up.

As long as there is high level interest in the game however, I wouldn't expect the base asking price to drop much at all. Base prices only drop when consumer interest drops, so if a game is keeping a higher price than one expects then it is most likely because the rest of the gaming marketplace puts high value on that game and are buying it up in sufficient quantities to confirm the asking price is both reasonable and profitable. This is good too because it increases the likelihood that such companies will produce sequels and other similar products in the future, as well as potentially stimulating other companies to follow suit (such as Tides of Numenara for example).

Anyhow, this may be stating the obvious but then well... sometimes the obvious needs to be stated too. :oP

Based on everything I've read about Pillars of Eternity (and based on Obsidian's track record), I think the Hero Edition would be worth every penny.

Really? there are full priced games with barely 8-10 hours of gameplay...

PoE and Witcher 3 were the first games in at least 10 years that i spend more than my usual limit on. Having spent more than 70h on both id say they were worth it...

What do you expect to get for $22 as a fair value? In general, examples of things you have bought that put this to shame.
It's their game, if it doesn't work for you, wait for sale or don't buy. $23 for PoE doesn't seem bad to me. The problem is them driving the tiering wedge into your head. I haven't seen the cookbook, collector's book, or guide but it's hard to justify these things being worth $30 in digital form. Guides are flam and useless in today's world of the internet option. The cookbook is less useful when you have to alt-tab to it instead of having it on hand like you would in a physical form. The collector's book can't go on a coffee table or shelf in digital form. Then again, I'm hesitant to attack a game that harkens back to a genre no longer prevalent these days, as well as one made by a studio like Obsidion. Paradox is OK, too.

The Novella is a different story (no pun). A good book could easily justify the $30 with the rest of the things but why is it still "coming soon"?

If you go based on time vs price ratio, you're probably getting well over a hundred hours if you play it. Even if it's expensive, if it's your kind of game it's worth the price, even at 50%.

However, being a frugal person, it honestly isn't quite worth it for me yet. I'm willing to wait. I still haven't played/beaten the original baulder's gates games, mostly since they are based on the old D&D systems and it's been a while so following the mechanics/system is a little more annoying for being optimal (which you pretty much have to be to play it and do any good at it).
