How does this cloud save thing work? I was about 50% through a game when things went bad. After the new hard drive is attached, will I be able to pick up where I left off via the cloud save? Will it in some way prompt me or do I have to follow some special procedure?

I'm not certain I understand, but here's what I think you're saying. You were playing a game. When you exited the game, you noticed Galaxy informing you that your save files are being synced to the cloud. At one point you suffered a HDD failure. Now you are getting a new HDD.

Install the new HDD. Install Galaxy, and allow it to install the game you were playing previously. Galaxy will also restore the save file it had last synced to the cloud. Once you start the game, you'll be able to load from these save files.

Don’t know, I make a point of personally copying the files off to various backup areas stored with the installers where I am in control and can organise as I like. Works even if the net was removed.

OK. It sounds like it will seamlessly happen. Yeah, I wasn't very clear but, you were close. I was shutting down the PC when the power failed so Windows didn't close correctly and it wasn't repairable. For whatever reason, due to a slow I-net connection, I couldn't download Win10 so, rather then send me a flashdrive, Alienware (Dell) decided to send a technician and replace the hard drive. No wonder Dell stocks aren't doing so well. :)

Funnily, I'm looking for a new laptop, and I see a lot of recommendations for Dell. I knew that Dell isn't really what it used to be, but that's some additional food for thought. Thanks for the tip!

They did fix the damage - it's just that they could have done it cheaper. It didn't cost me anything, mind you; it just wasn't the best way to go in my opinion. I think Microsoft won't let Dell send it on a flash drive due to greed, er, I mean licensing issues.
