cw8: How much is the sharpness loss? Can those be corrected by the Unsharp Mask in PS?

I'm not too serious about birds though. I wanna take a few good photos of some birds when the opportunity pops up but I don't think I'll go hunt for birds to shoot however, so you can call me a casual for that.
I'm much more serious about landscapes which is y I got the 10-20mm. The Sigma 120-400mm does sound great, I might consider that if I don't get the 18-270mm.

Was considering about the 18-270mm for travel overseas, if I get to travel in the future, one in all lens for everything. Pack the bag with the UWA and ditch the kit lens, add the flashgun, tripod and the filters to the load. I think I can travel pretty light except for the tripod of course.
Sharpness loss is tricky to say and how much you can get back through unsharpen mask depends on the output of your photos. If you're just making them for the internet then resizing and sharpening in stages will hide a lot of softness and results will be decent enough. Prints is a different area (one I've not delved that much into as yet) - again some sizes you might be ok at others you'll see the softness.

Your last point though is really identifying what this lens its - its giving you a single do all lens, which as you say is great for travel when you want to travel light and when photography is probably not the main reason for the travel. Quality isn't really what this lens is about its the convenience of having a do all lens.

cw8: You shoot the eyes of insects. I got problems trying to shoot the leaf where the insect is on :D
What cheap ball tripod do you recommend. The cheapskate $17 one I'm using now shakes in the wind heh.
With tripods you get three options:
Cost
Stability
Weight

You can pick two only. If you want cheap and stable its going to have to be heavy - its also probably going to be a second hand tripod with a 3 way head instead of a ballhead. It's hard to say though since a lot of this depends on how much you can throw at a tripod - if its not much at all second hand tripods are a solid investment - if you've more you can look at more modern and expensive options.
Also note once you hit the pro series the legs come without tripod heads - important to note if you look at new or second hand since unless its stated as being a kit or bundle it will come without a head.

K, the Digital Rev review says it's made in China. That about helped me decide not to get it. :D
If I ever get a superzoom, probably just get the Sigma 18-250mm. My Sigma 10-20mm is made in Japan. Then maybe use the 18-250mm or 10-20mm as the walkaround lens.\

What kind of tripod can I get for say US$100? I need something, preferably ball-headed that can go down low for stuff like beach shots. Low angle shots + UWA lens = win.

Ahh I'm a bad one to ask that to since I'm in the UK (wrong market). However I'd say have a look for an older model manfrotto 190 tripod and ball head on ebay. Avoid the newer XPROB designs since to go to low angles the middle section comes out and then flips to a horizontal angle. This sounds really neat, till you try it and find that you've not only got your tripod at an odd angle to what it normally is, but you've also got a long section of the middle waving around which gets in the way.

Awesome, I'll check it out, thanks for the help! I need to curb my spending on photography soon. :D

Thx ! Cool sky indeed, except for the right side (too bright). We had a tornado warning something like 15 minutes before, heh.

D90 kit lens. :)

Nice shot, multiple exposure or one exposure? Kinda like to have one of those for my drive to work, what the top speed on that . . . that . . . thing? . . . =)
Thx ! 3 exposures. Top speed : 25 mph (200 mph if dropped from the top of a cliff).

That sky bugs me. I can't wait for the next storm. :D

I believe it might get a little hostile on the interstate . . . =)

I like the scene and vehicle, looks like the twenties or thirties. You could edit the sky out and put what you wanted in ???

Actually I was going to give it a try with cloning. Patience, patience... heh.

Cloning will work, hope you don't mind if mess with the image, your original would look much better of course . . . =)

Made a duplicate layer then used the eraser tool to erase the bright sky to transparency. Pulled dark sky from the bottom original layer (Ctrl - J), moved and stretched it to fit behind the transparent dupe layer. Erased the overlap of sky and tractor., A little touch up with the clone tool etc.

Do you use Grad ND filters?
avatar
Stuff: snip
Layering + eraser... of course, I should have thought about it before the cloning method. Your editing is pretty darn good, considering that you probably didn't waste too much time on it. Thx !

No filter at all, just my 18-105, naked. :) But thx for reminding me, it's about time I get one of those. And they are so cheap.
I have a DeviantArt account. I don't have a great camera to use but I enjoy taking pictures nonetheless whenever I get a chance: DA-Account
