Kalonos: They are adventure games in where you explore a map with locked zones looking for upgrades, after which those zones come open. It doesn't need to be a sidescroller to be a Metroidvania game. What are the Metroid Prime games then?

SirPrimalform: 3D first person games with metroidvania aspects. The definition of metroidvania doesn't magically change to accommodate whatever direction the Metroid series takes...

Anyway, you're welcome to call them whatever you want. I was only saying that I certainly wouldn't consider them metroidvanias.
Isn't this the definition of Metroidvania?

"A style of platform game with role-playing game elements and inventory items, involving more exploration than a traditional linear platform game."
Knytt Underground maybe? As a "Metroidvania"?

anjohl: Symphony of the Night is absolutly essential. Great game. Metroid Fusion too. The last playable Metroid game.
I agree with both your recommendations. However Dice5 did say no console games.
Two free Rogue-likes I have played and enjoyed:

nethack dot org
transcendence dot kronosaur dot com

I am afraid I am not into those other games unless Lemmings can be counted as one...
There is also a combination of the two genres: a Castlevania Roguelike!
(free and Java-based. I.e. platform independent)
Oh - I forgot - Gentrive 2, 1 person procedurally generated metroidvania.
Could we all PLEEEAAAASE agree that the term "Metroidvania" is widely accepted to be referring to 2D platform exploration games like the classic Metroid & Castlevania series?

We should move on to providing Dice5 with answers to his original question.

Dokusai: Have you played Spelunky? It's a rougelike metroidvania where you play as an Indiana Jones type character.
I second that.
Give Spelunky a try. It's free to download & play. It has random levels too! :)

Hmmm. There was a decent little free indie metroidvania title I played briefly some time ago. I can't think of the name of it now. Lost Daughter? Last Daughter? Does anyone know the game I am trying to think of?

No, not really. OP has no such definitions, this is all yours. For me genre is more about gameplay, than not just perspective. I have no problem with metroidvania games being played in 1'st or 3'd person perspective.

I would also like to mention Delver for rogue likes, but it is 3d, so I am maybe not allowed.

PS - Also, not sure OP cares that much any more, this is a necor'd thread.

PSS - Caveat is of course when someone puts perspective as description of genre for example 2d metrodvania or FPS, OP did not

I've been watching that one for a while and it looks amazing!
I am officially adding to the recommendations of Project Black Sun and Bunny Must Die.

BTW it's likes not [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rouge]rougelikes.

And there are tons of roguelikes on the PC. Most of the in the grand tradition of dungeon crawlers, not these newly fangled Bindings and FTLs :)

I'd recommend:

Stone Soup
Tales of Maj'eyal
Dungeons of Dredmor

Well perhaps he was looking for something like the colour red that isn't the colour red. In French. :P

Kalonos: "A style of platform game with role-playing game elements and inventory items, involving more exploration than a traditional linear platform game."
By that definition, Metroid is not a Metroidvania, since it lacks roleplaying game elements.

Something like...

"A style of platform game with adventure game elements, involving more exploration than a traditional linear platform game"

...would probably make more sense.

And yes, laying down the definition is important if we're gonna suggest some games to the OP. What he is looking for are action-adventure games with platforming elements, not action-RPGs.

Yes, I realize that Symphony of the Night has some action-RPG elements, but that is not part of the Metroid formula. These type of games, including SotN, are first and foremost action-adventures.
