Leroux: Awesome link, thanks for sharing!
I found it earlier this year and then forgot to bookmark it. When I remembered it last week I went on a frantic google!

Their definition of Metroidvania is pretty broad but it's still a very worthwhile site. Lots of freeware and indie things to be found.
Here's a roguelike sorry if anyone posted it before

And a metroidvania also again sorry if anyone mentioned it

Interesting. Can anyone recommend anything from there? I prefer more of the Metroidvania kind and less roguelike (RPG and items rather than hard challenge)

I noticed they promoted Valdis Story, I think the release is quite close now.

I played the demo of Rogue Legacy and found it to be all kinds of awesome. I really enjoy the family line aspect of the game plus you can build your castle up, customize your dude/dudette with a bunch of runes, unlock all sorts of classes. And the game has superb controller support.

Another one I can recommend is Unepic especially since it too just got some kick butt controller support and Francisco, the dev, is constantly working on improving the game. The graphics, to me, are unique, tons of loot (and yes, our version has some GOG-related swag in the game :D), cool boss fights. Just don't ask Telika, one of our forum goers about one of them :D.
I revcently reached the end game of Unepic, I had a blast until that point. :P

I'll read up on Rogue Legacy, they mentioned a release here on GOG too. :)
I've just finished Waking Mars and I'm surprised that it wasn't mentioned here yet, despite being available on GOG. It's basically Aquaria in space. Without combat. And without bosses. And instead of exploiting your environment for yummy snacks, you need to repair and preserve the ecosystem of the caverns, which leads to a bit of puzzling and RTS/business sim like building, farming and resource management. Anyway, one thing it's got in common with Aquaria apart from being an enjoyable metroidvania is a great soundtrack! :)

Yes, Rogue Legacy is really superb. I finally killed the first boss ... after about 30 generations. xD
Aztaka, if it hasn't already been mentioned, and I'll mention it again - AZTAKA.

Absolutely incredible metroidvania game with amazing hand-drawn visuals, a great story and a great soundtrack.
It came out in 2009, I believe. It's available on Steam, and was one of the first indie platformers I bought before I really started buying them, and without question, is still one of the best.

AZZZTAKAAA.

Man, I would so like to play that one; that you say it's a metroidvania type of game makes me regret even more that my current rig can't run it smoothly. It was in one of the first indie bundles I bought (Indie Games Pack or something like that?) and ever since it's been waiting for me to finally get a new computer. ;)

Yup, I concur heartily!

Me too!

Does anyone know a site similar to MobyGames or GiantBomb but with better filters? A metroidvania as a genre would be kind of awesome too, makes the search easier. :P

The best I've found is that Tumblr I linked to further back. Go on there and then click the 'released' tag, it filters out all the news posts and just gives you all the games, one post per game.

Oh, neat trick. I actually found a few with demos available.

It's a pity they're still sorted in order of posting though, it'd be nice if someone did a proper database that can be sorted in other ways.
