MetroidVanias (I call it 2D action adventure):

Poacher:
Medium difficulty,about 8-10 hours long.
Has a nice story for such a game and even some C&C that affects the ending.
Also humorous.

Nightmare Sphere:
A Japanese freeware game(has a weird translation to English).
You play as a girl who has been resurrected for some reason I forgot...
Anyway, the game has a very big world with a lot of upgrades(For example there is double jump->triple->quad->FLY and
dash-air dash-air dash twice, air dash three times, you get the idea)
In combat you get to use 3 weapons, each one has 4 combos with upgrades. And also various elemental magic orbs.
The character has stats ,but being an action game, they don't matter much.
There are many bosses(including the Predator?at least looks like him.)however many are reused.
Took me about 15 hours.

The game also has some kind of alignment system which affects the ending - if you help or hurt people you can get "Purified"/"Corrupted" and become "Good"/"Evil"

However note that the game features rape,as enemies will try to rape you and you can rape npcs as well.

Well, I for one appreciate the warning. I shall investigate armed with foreknowledge.
As far as roguelikes go, I have to recommend Sword of the Stars: The Pit. It's got all of the elements of a classic roguelike: YASD (yet another stupid death :D), proper turn-based movement and combat, randomization, tons of skills that are also affected by your primary stats, etc. And yes, you can get it here :P

On the metroidvania front, I have to update my impressions about Unepic now that I got to play the latest version (1.42.3). The graphics are no longer too tiny to see as the game supports just about every resolution under the sun. I am playing it right now at 1900 x 1200 and it looks AWESOME. The GOG shirt and the Classic Controller (mace) are also nice goodies to have :D.

Here's a roguelike for those of you with kids. It's called Crayon Chronicles and it's actually quite complex once you look past the surface. You have some decent customization options: you can customize the three friends you have to rescue, your catch phrase, how your character looks and more. Gameplay is as follows: turn-based combat? Yep, it's there :D. Stats? Sure, there's only 4 of them but you get a chance to pick the two you want to upgrade at level up. Randomization? Yes! Basically, if you want to introduce your child to gaming and not worry about gory violence or bad language, then I can't think of a better game.

Check it out here: http://www.outergridgames.com/

I have also taken the liberty to edit the thread title because the misspelling of rogue into rouge just drives me nuts. Sorry OP.

Honestly that looks like something I'd enjoy. Is it DRM-free? I couldn't find anything on the site stating whether it is or isn't.

If you're talking about Crayon Chronicles then the only thing that resembles DRM is the one-time activation code you enter to unlock the full version from the demo. I've seen worse DRM :D

Crayon Chronicles looks awesome, and it's cheap on top of it. :D The website says you get a registration code if you purchase it - do you happen to know if the activation is DRM-free/offline (like Shareware and CD keys used to work) or online (like SecuRom)?

EDIT: Whoops, I've never been ninja'd this badly before - I should probably have refreshed the page before posting ... XD I'm still interested to know if the one-time activation is on- or offline though (and would it work with each new installation?).

When I was activating the game I don't recall it telling me that I needed to be online but I am not 100% sure as it's been a while since I activated the game. I can tell you one thing: Windows Firewall didn't pop up asking if I wanted Crayon Chronicles to have access to the internet so take that as you will :D.

Ok, thanks! In any case, DRM or not, unless it will secretly erase your harddisk, I guess you can't really go wrong with a $3 game. :D

Like I said, I was online but I don't recall the game calling home or prompting me that I need to be online. Keep in mind that it's been a while since I activated it :D

Thanks for the tip off about Crayon Chronicles! It is indeed off-line activation and the game is pretty damn good too.
Has anyone linked to this site yet?

DRM_free_fan: Hmmm. There was a decent little free indie metroidvania title I played briefly some time ago. I can't think of the name of it now. Lost Daughter? Last Daughter? Does anyone know the game I am trying to think of?
Sorry for the late reply, I missed your post but I only just thought of the same game and noticed it isn't mentioned here yet. I assume you're referring to Eternal Daughter (scroll to the end of the page)?

Yes that was it.
