tinyE: OH! So you were telling me off for my opinion of the game!

Oh thank god! cool. :D

That's fine because I realize I'm part of the .000000000001 % that didn't like the original Descent.
What did you think I was telling you off for?

Not in here. :P
Probably Magic Carpet, 60fps and anti-aliasing in 1994.
Battlezone. Twice :)
First in 1980 with vector graphics, and second time in 1998 with fluid RTS/FPS/SIM mechanics...

Yes, because thats so me right? I would so call out on something that does not even involve this thread. There is a time and place for things and this is not the time or place for that, other then what pc game was ahead of its time.

I say Wolf3D was ahead of times due to the fluidity of its first person movement, remember most first person games out at that time was I think Ultima Underworld and that was a RPG, not an action action game.
Thief: The Dark Project. The first First Person Sneaker that I can recall. The use of 3D audio was spectacular.
I remembered playing Descent for 10-15 minutes as a kid and felt extremely nauseous and wanted to throw up. There are certain old games with that graphic style and the 'gliding' motion through the graphics seems to cause it. Another one is Half Life, where there is no bobbing and you just glides around.
M.U.L.E. - Fantastic economy model well before its time.

I didn't get sick. I didn't like it because after the first two mines I kept getting lost. :P

If you have no innate sense of direction this game is NOT FOR YOU! :P
For me, I'd have to say Myth. The first three games (Wolf Age was "ok"), just blew my mind back then, and pretty much had me glued to my pc.

onarliog: No Man's S... screw it, I can't even finish the joke.

I'd say Populous in 1989. A revolutionary game that nobody quite understood on release, only to spawn a hugely popular genre of its own in the following years.

EDIT: Dammit, forgot about the "PC" part.
It's in the list I linked to but if you have anything to add, that'd be cool.

dtgreene: From what I have read, Ultima 9. Apparently, its over-the-shoulder camera hadn't been done before, and even the system requirements were ahead of its time (which, of course, makes the game inaccessible to many players).

Of course, being ahead of its time doesn't actually make the game good, but then again, I haven't played it (the lack of a female Avatar option in Ultimas 8 and 9 is a dealbreaker for me).
For an RPG perhaps? But Tomb Raider was from 1996, soon followed by Mario 64 and there were a bunch of games like them in the following years. There's also I, Robot from 1983 (!), and Alpha Waves from 1990.

You might have use for this list then: http://www.mobygames.com/game-group/protagonist-female

Elite. It was an awesome game with a huge open universe.

Come to think of it, Wolfenstein 3D was actually simplified version of Catacomb 3D.
So, yeah Catacomb 3D was FPS much ahead of it's time.
This is a good video series to get some perspective on FPS history with:

Does anyone know what gets the crown for the actual first 3D FPS game? I'm so totally confused right now. :P

And I was going to mention Diablo, but there were other hack & slash crawlers before that, so why is everyone after Diablo called a "Diablo Clone"? Seems kind if like the way us 'Muricans give credit to Columbus for being the first to do something 400 years after someone else did it. :P
