Summer is a great time for fresh air, beaches, and vacations, but what if your vacation desires are something a little more… untraditional? What if you’d prefer to launch off into the cold of space and set out on an adventure?

Well, in that case, you’re going to need to turn to games! During the Summer Sale on GOG.COM, we’ve got a bunch of stellar space exploration titles available, all at amazing discounts as a part of the Space Games Collection.

To celebrate these titles, we wanted to take a minute to talk about some of our favorite ones. So, if you are looking for a new game to sink some time into, we’ve got you covered. Strap in, and let’s blast off!

Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity

Starting off this list is the excellent real-time strategy title Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity, where you take the lead of a spacefaring civilization that is embroiled in galactic war. Construct starbases, conquer your enemies, and once you’ve beaten them down, forge an alliance with them.

MOTHERGUNSHIP

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have MOTHERGUNSHIP, a blisteringly fast bullet-hell game that has you mowing down loads of alien machines and giant bosses. What helps sets this title apart is the ability to craft your own guns with over-the-top parts to build the ultimate weapon!

Space Empires Complete Pack

Space is the perfect setting for strategy games, and with the Space Empires Complete Pack, you get access to multiple titles from the series! Explore solar systems, design your spacecraft, choose from multiple races to play, and more.

Shadow Empire

Here’s another strategy title for the list, but one adds a unique twist in that much of the content is procedurally generated, meaning each time you play will be a little different. Navigate a tricky political landscape as you look to make friends with both governments and cult leaders as you wage war on a grid-based battlefield.

X4: Foundations Collector's Edition

In this Collector’s Edition of X4: Foundations, you not only get the main game but two expansions, as well! This beautiful space simulation lets you fly plenty of spacecraft, add them to your fleet, and explore a living universe with a constantly shifting economy.

EVERSPACE 2

If you are looking for something a little more fast-paced, then look no further than EVERSPACE 2. This one is perfect for people that want a little bit of everything. Explore the universe, pilot unique ships, and blast away enemy ships while collecting loot. And don’t worry, there’s a great story too!

Master of Orion: Collector's Edition

Another beautiful space game, Master of Orion: Collector’s Edition brings all three games from the series. Choose from a variety of races and build technologies to gain an advantage across 100 different solar systems. War isn’t your only win condition! Outwit your opponents through technological and diplomatic victories, as well!

Deliver Us The Moon

The final game takes place a little closer to home - the moon. The Earth is in bad shape, and you’ve been sent to the moon to investigate why the colony there has suddenly stopped broadcasting. Explore the space station, solve puzzles, and get to the bottom of the mystery.

So there you have it, some of the awesome space-focused games that you can snag for a discount during the Summer Sale on GOG.COM! So whether you want to shoot things or just hop in a spaceship and explore, there’s something here for you.

What do you think? What’s your favorite space game? Are any of these great games catching your eye? Let us know down in the comments!
Shadow Empire still lacks a forum page.
It is quite needed, considering it's a game that allows PBEM multiplayer and could be a good point to gather players for a game.

No 'Starfury' - not complete series. =)
Anyway - great release !
I forgot about Starfury. Very good game. Thankfully I got it years ago from...somewhere, I don't remember now.
I hope they bring it here.

Maxvorstadt: Same here.

Cymepa: I'm sorry, can you clarify, which game is SEIVD and which game gets an increased discount? Thanks!
SEIVD is Space Empires IV Deluxe.
The whole Space Empires bundle gets in increased discount, if you already had SPEIVD from here.

Gudadantza: I am really curious about The Space Empires I, II and III. Are they virtualized? are the original Windows 3.1 versions tweaked? or are they real ports for newer windows?

And which ones are the basic differences betwen the first three games? are basically engine upgrades of the same game or are they differentiated i more things?

thanks in advance, greetings
I tried them yesterday. They appear to be running natively on Windows 10, though I can't 100% guarantee that is the case. They look like normal Windows' windows.

I never tried the first two games before yesterday, so I don't know them at all. The rest appear to be the "normal" versions, perhaps tweaked for modern systems. I say perhaps because I never tried to run then before I bought them here on modern systems.

The first three games appear to be getting more and more complex. The third one appears to be quite modern in comparison.

The first few games can't have their resolution changed, at least the little I have spend my time with, so if you use a 14" 4K monitor you might be in trouble.

Thanks for the info.

I must understand that the first two games run at their native resolution. I guess that it could be 640x480. But is it scaled? or the desktop resolution is changed? Maybe is it shown in a tiny window instead?. Or can it be resized like a proper win app?

Greetings

Space Empires 1.
You first get a maximized window with borders, where you set up the number and names of players. When you actually start the game then you get a resizable window, but the GUI elements inside it remain same size and position even if you resize the window. It's a small window. Probably around 640x480.
When you end your turn the window disappears and is replaced by a maximized bordered window asking you to click to play at which point it too disappears and you get the regular window back.

Space Empires 2.
Same as with 1, only that the window is not resizable at all. When you end turn the window disappears to be replaced by a pop up dialogue element saying the turn is being processed, after which you get a small confirmation window to click to go back and play your next turn in the usual normal window I mentioned before.

Space Empires 3.
You get a large resizable (and possible to maximize) bordered window. Within it there are multiple other windows for each part of the game. Within you can change the size, minimize maximize each element/window. Think of Windows 3.1 GUI. While the game window is resizable, it doesn't affect the windows inside it, so you get scrolling bars on bottom and right side of the game window to scroll through to see the windows, or of course to change the dimensions of the windows within the window. if you have made the main window smaller. I hope that makes sense.

Space Empires 4.
I haven't installed it yet.

Space Empires 5.
You get an option to choose windowed or fullscreen and resolution for the fullscreen option.
The resolutions available are all there, but they don't all see to work. My native 2560x1440 doesn't work, it gives an application error. Same with 4K. 1080p works. You also have an option to pick 16 or 32 bit color.
The windowed mode seems to be fixed at around 1024x768 or close by.

1,2,3, No scaling or desktop resolution changes.
5, if you play on windowed mode, no resolution changes for the desktop or scaling. If you play full screen then at least the 1080p seems to be performing desktop resolution change. The reason I am saying this is because when you exit the game, or if you minimize the game (it has a button to minimize the game when in fullscreen mode), then while the game minimizes, the desktop icons are all moved to a smaller area. If you wait a few seconds everything goes back to normal positions.

Again, I haven't tried 4 and I don't remember much about how that worked.

Thanks a lot. I can have an idea now.

Space Empires 4 has a black UI specific for te game. If my memory does not fail it should fill your native resolution. The interface abandons the pure Windows 3.1/95 aesthetic or pure windows functionality.
