I know my opinion may seem extreme to some, but I think the entire concept is stupid and ridiculous and maybe even dangerous in the long run.
I'm suspect of course, since I only buy my games on GOG.

I'm also alarmed by the way the author of the article just seems to dismiss the issue of eventual future dangers of game-subscription (which are inherent to every streaming service, of course). Like running out of $ and suddenly you can't play your beloved game anymore.

Still if you're a Steam user (and you have to always be online to play certain games) why not just pay less in order to play those same games? I somehow can see the logic behind it.

What do you good folks think of this?

Locking your games behind subscription is something i of course despise and would never sign up to or support in any way and that goes two fold with an already released game.

Suffice to say i hate Paradox and already knew they are idiots, they pretend to care about their consumers with good post launch support and all but it's all BS. Most people don't think ahead or have thoughts of their own therefore crap like this will happen which is sad.

To be honest, Paradox's model these last few years seems dangerously close to a subscription service already, with a small DLC every few months (for each of their currently developed games). They seem to be moving to larger and less frequent expansions lately, though.

Especially considering that the base game has become Free to Play.

But it would flood the GOG catalogue by a bajillion DLCs which I am not sure would be a good idea.

Indeed, I am suprised gogs database hasn’t blown up already. I know modern databases can hold millions of records, but this paradox we are talking about.

Paradox died for me a long time ago. Too many DLCs and no more complete games.

I don't see a problem with this. if someone wants to subscribe to such a service, let them do so. personally I want,.

and I do not see this as much of a threat, either, most games will still be sold as well

After being hooked on MMOs for years, I kicked the habit and long ago, decided to never pay a subscription fee for any game. I am ok with optional DLC, but not like Pdx does it, where they screw up the base game and in some cases drastically alter what the game is.

So I am all for it as it will help me to never consider another pdx game.

Yeah after CK2 i went from being a regular customer to one that has not bought anything since and will ONLY get their games years after relases with all the DLC added, and usually it is on a huge discount by then. Their change in ideology around CK2 'monitization' pretty much lost me as a loyal customer. They deserve better than that imho.

If it's single-player and I can't play it offline for as long as I want, then I'm simply not going to buy it because that's not ownership. I subscribe to an MMO but that's something that requires server maintenance, frequent content updates and the constant rebalancing that entails. Plus it's not something I can stow away on an external drive or whatever. Completely different expectations for single-player vs multiplayer.

I will say that for the most part, Paradox have been reasonably anti-DRM in my eyes. Even the Steam exclusives can be played without Steam running once you've downloaded them (no installer though). This is going in the exact opposite direction so I wouldn't be caught dead supporting it with my wallet. Unlike buying their games on GOG, which is where almost my entire winter sale budget went.

Subscriptions are really popular with consumers whether we like it or not. I don't personally understand it, but that doesn't change anything. Assuming they offered frequent new content additions, I'd guess lots of people would be into what they're talking about.

Pay less? It all depends on how long you pay for the subscription.

Anyway, not for me; I want DRM free games & I minimize my fixed costs as much as possible.

The DLC ridden 4x is already a bad enough experience for me that I avoid them till a complete edition comes out so making it worse will at least mean not less money from me :P
