LOL... So my family got me a new laptop (I was borrowing one to play Fallout 4) and in setting things up I was doing one step I've done EVERY TIME I GET A NEW COMPUTER, and that is installing THE ORIGINAL AND STILL THE BEST Age Of Empires and...... NO DVD PLAYER!!! WTF????

Panic stricken I start looking underneath... in the back and then whew.... there it was, on the left side right next to a USB port that I had somehow missed. Cold sweat was running down my spine.... whew.

But now I'm playing Age of Empires on a Windows 10 computer..... AND IT'S STILL THE BEST!!!! I have to have my AoE fix on a regular basis or I'm not sure what might happen... lol.

By the way, 100% DRM free too (unbelievable from Microsoft isn't it?). Once installed, the DVD can be removed and you can play it to your hearts content. No disc check, no online check, no registration (I stopped registering several installations ago figuring they must have about 100 copies of my AoE registration by now lol). Just click and play... the way it's supposed to be.

But.... what happens if I ever do get a laptop without a DVD player??? Noooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!

You just convert the DVD to an ISO file and no worries.

Quite a few laptops are doing that now, in the interest of "streamlining". Quite annoying. Only 1 USB port, no LAN port, only wifi and no DVD/CD.
Definitely not the direction I'd go. If I wanted something that light and streamlined, I'd use my phone.

Pretty sure there are no CD patches for aoe 1 and 2. Or you can install somewhere else and transfer it to a pendrive and onto your laptop.

Get a disc image of it, you can rip the dvd to an image file and then load that image file in daemon tools as a virtual disc. I do this with all my discs as I don't want to damage them. I use clonnecd.

It's by far the best RTS IMO. Ever since then, in an attempt to "do more" they've, again IMO, gone too far and the games are just.... too much. Too many units to keep track off... too many things happening at once... just somehow too much.. at least for my old brain and what's left of it's functionality. I turn on AoE and sometimes spend hours going through the simple Tutorial campaign. Still fun though. And that's what a game is supposed to be. Fun, not confusing and overwhelming.

I occasionally play other real time strategies, even AoE II and III, but one is still my favorite by far. And you can find thousands of scenarios and campaigns for it online at the granary.

I don't suppose anyone knows of an ftp site for AOE campaigns, its a bit annoying downloading single files each a tiny size.

I think it was some fancy shmancy tiny HP laptop (I borrowed from a friend when I needed a more powerful device...it is more powerful, but quite limiting otherwise).

You go to a store, buy a flash drive, copy the game on it and then insert it in the usb's laptop.

Only one USB port—what the heck?! No USB headset and USB mouse and USB controller at the same time? What is this disgusting thing?

Mine is four years old and has three USB slots. Less than three USB slots is a big no-go for me. Eww.

(I know you could use a USB hub, but a quality product is a product that doesn't require any workarounds.)
