Hope someone can help.

Recently updated my old XP machine to a new Win 10 machine, but several games, Overseer being one - are not running.

They install fine, but I get the (file name).exe has stopped working message when I attempt to run them.

Tried running as an Administrator, using different compatability settings, colour settings, resolution and a combination of all of them - no joy.

Hope someone can help

No prob. Please follow these five easy steps:

1. Brew yourself a cup of tea
2. Drink your tea. Pinkie up (optional)
3. Put the empty cup into the washing machine.
4. Severely flagellate yourself for using Windows 10
5. Revert back to XP (I don't care how, just do it), praising your wisdom

Serious answer: unfortunately, Overseer is not officially supported by GOG past Windows Vista, and there's probably a reason for this. I too hope somebody is able to help you, however.

install a virtual machine like virtual pc
virtual box
or the like

install windows xp in a virtual machine
install the games
play them in the VM

or go back to xp or vista

or install vista or xp on a second hand laptop or desktop laptop is easier to store solely for retro gaming

As soon as it downloads, I'm going to try emulate XP and see if I can get it to work like that. (on Win7 though)

I agree about Win 10 - came pre installed on my new PC, I didn't choose it

XP was great imho.

Saw on a different thread about running it via sandbox. Tried this and I do not get the Overseer.exe has stopped working but a Direct Draw error

DirectDraw init Failed

Well, I downloaded and tried it to work on win7. It does run, but the video has no sound and objects are flaky, but it does technically work. Probably a directdraw or video codec issue.

Then I booted up my virtual machine XP mode, and that doesn't work directly. It was a longshot, since it only emulates direct drivers, but it was worth a shot.

UAKM and TPD work fine as well - even on Win 10

I was imagining showing up at the end of the game only to find the room empty...

xp is 15 years old by now its time to let it go


alternatively im not willing to let go of windows 7 because i dont like certain things in 10
i am at best willing to move to 8.1

I assume it's because those are running in Dosbox, while Overseer is a Windows-exclusive FMV game from the late 90s. Compatibility with modern systems for something like that is wonky even at the best of times.

best thing to do with games like that is to scrounge up a dedicated retro gaming system
and either run xp or windows 98\ME

Yep, and even then, it sometimes feels like you have to resort to black magic in order to get those damn things to run properly.
