It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

Well, loading up the old hotmail today after a few days away and looky here, M$ has been "improving" it again. Seriously though, what is their problem, it is just going from bad to worse. Half the time it refuses to work (on any browser), the other half the time it doesn't work as it did before. For instance, I had a mail in drafts before, where if I found a link then I would post it in their and look at it later. Tried that yesterday and it kept popping up previews of that page, annoying at best but not he end of the world. I look at that mail today and lo and behold all the links in the post have gone. They show in the preview, and I can copy out the source and get them that way, but just opening it in outlook shows nothing.

So, does anyone have any good suggestions for a replacement web mail? I know gmail, which is ok as long as you don't have anything you don't want the entire population of the US to read. The others seem to be either plagued by bad interfaces, or poor support (looking at GMX comments here), or completely awash with adverts.

Any suggestions, even paid might be better at this point.

How about plain old postcards, it doesn't mean people won't read them on their way, but due to how they're expediting things these days, it's your best bet.

Yahoo is fairly decent, isn't it?
If you're very private and a bit geeky, you could always run your own server :P

That's what I do (on an old Mac Mini running and old version of OS X Server, but that's beside the point), then set up Roundcube on the web server and you get what (in my opinion) is one of the best webmail clients I've used.

EDIT: If you're not averse to running your own web server, but don't want to set up a mail server, you can most likely set up Roundcube to talk to Outlook.com via IMAP like any normal desktop web client does.

I used to know somebody that ran a Gentoo server with LDAP and e-mail and such on it for his whole family, it was pretty neat.
He did still run it from home I think, but back then hosting and such were very expensive.
I personally created a Gmail account, linked all my hotmail accounts to it and never looked back Of course Gmail is not cool in this day and age but it works so who gives a toss.

Fairfox: I moved over to Gmail years ago, way less clunky, and nice 'n' neat. Winz.
Well yes, but unlike OP you're not trying to sell state secrets via your e-mail account.
Probably.

Indeed, and how did you know that...Mr Smith?

Anyways, yes, hadn't thought of linking the accounts. Gmail works at least so might just do that. Thanks for the suggestion darthspudius.

Gmail can fetch messages from your Hotmail/Live/Outlook account, which --of course-- makes Google aware of everything in said messages, and any messages you send will go directly from Gmail. I wouldn't suggest doing that if you're paranoid of Google snooping around.

Is a Microsoft account really that much more secure and private that moving to Gmail is seen as a serious risk?

You can set up the Windows Live Mail client to download emails and such from your Hotmail account to your own computer.

I doubt m$ are any better, however saying that gmail is much more useable than hotmail now. Their changes over the last fee years are really ruining it.
