Let me start by saying that I love game soundtracks. I have lots of them on my iPod that I listen to on headphones in the office or in the car driving home from gigs in the early hour of the morning.

I hear soundtracks I like on various sites for games that I wouldn't be interested in playing but when I find some of those soundtracks available here, I'm not able to purchase them without owning the game!

Why?

I suppose I *could* just trawl the internet for an alternative source but why should I when they're right here on a site that I visit on a daily basis? A site that I know I can trust with my purchases?

I'd be interested to hear from a blue if Is this a 'feature' of the store that's going to be reviewed at some point?

I think it is possible to buy the soundtrack as a gift and then redeem it yourself without owning the base game.

Nope.

You can buy soundtrack or DLC as gift, but can not redeem them without owning the base game.
I know it because I have bought several free DLC as gift to myself.

Thanks Grargar, but I just don't get it. They managed to set up a separate platform for movies so why can't they do the same for OSTs?

I have a big enough backlog without paying for games I'll never play just to get a soundtrack. I'd rather do without. :-(

I can't really say with any certainty. Maybe they had plans to do so, but they fell through when the movies didn't catch on. Maybe they couldn't come to an agreement with the publishers/composers. Maybe operating as a music store isn't particularly profitable for them. The exact details are and will most lilkely remain unknown.

Hm. That tab is still there? I've gotten so used to ignoring it... GOG should just remove that section for purchasing altogether.

Glad you pointed me to that thread as I just checked my account and haven't been given my Broken Sword OSTs. :-/

Not happy! How many more things am I missing from my account?
I also think it would be nice to be able to purchase OSTs that are sold as DLCs. Now I listen to streams instead and noone gets paid but if they do not want money it is their problem.
I imagine it is the publisher of the game that decides whether or not they wish to sell the soundtrack of their games as a separate product, or as a DLC subproduct that requires the base product as part of the business model rather than as a technical dependency.

Are there any game soundtracks available for standalone purchase on GOG? What about on Steam or some other service? I've no idea but genuinely curious without bias either way.
The Obduction soundtrack is standalone. It was announced (and therefore confirmed) by no other than our beloved Judas. I will just say this: If the publishers wanted to sell their soundtracks separately, they could.
Think you should be able to buy them on Bandcamp for smaller releases and iTunes for bigger ones (mostly anyway)

But if they're already selling them as DLC, why wouldn't they want to capitalise on extra income from people like me who would buy the soundtrack but have no interest in the game? It may not be a large amount, but it's still extra sales. I doubt there are many people who would for the game just to be able to own the OST.

So it's not a platform issue then if it was done for Obduction. I own the game so didn't realise there was a difference in the setup. Gotta love Cyan. :-)
Why are soundtracks sold, instead of being given inside game's extras?
