nightcraw1er.488: I realise that I am fighting a losing fight here. I joined this store as it offered the ability to purchase a game on the storefront and download via browser, and then disconnect. That is it the sole point of buying here. Every month that point is now being eroded away in favour of becoming more steam like. Time to find a new store.
ncameron: And there is nothing at all stopping you from still doing that. All of the games are still available for you to buy via the normal methods. They are all still able to be downloaded by your browser. None of them require a connection after download. I'm at a loss as to what your issue is here? That you aren't able to get a discount because you don't want to follow instructions to get the discount? There's nothing making you install Galaxy, just that you get a freebie if you do. If you want System Shock 2 that badly, guess what - you can still buy it outside Galaxy as normal. There is no 'forcing' happening here, it's all in your mind. Pax11

richlind33: I think the point he's speaking to is that Galaxy and Connect are indicative of the Steam business model, the primary purpose of which is DRM. But really, I don't understand all the outrage, as if people are somehow entitled to a gift. In this case, it is a gift with strings and if you don't like the strings, you don't receive the gift. End of story.

Indeed you are correct, thank you for the information.

Pax No, I think you miss my point entirely. It is nothing to do with the game free or otherwise. It is simply that those using Galaxy are being treated differently to those that don't. If, for instance, I were to remove the word Galaxy and put the word female that would be acceptable would it? No, of course it would not. Those of us who don't want (or can't - from linux user above) to use a client are being excluded because of this. This is something that has been coming from the time they released this client and it wont be long before it is client or nothing, just like steam.
richlind33: I think the point he's speaking to is that Galaxy and Connect are indicative of the Steam business model, the primary purpose of which is DRM.
Pax11: That may be, but let's be honest: the only reason to use Connect or Galaxy (for the sale and for purposes of this discussion), are to get something free. In fact, I see Connect as simply a big favor from GOG that they didn't really have to do. Of course, it's also a likely good marketing ploy. But really, I don't understand all the outrage, as if people are somehow entitled to a gift. In this case, it is a gift with strings and if you don't like the strings, you don't receive the gift. End of story.

But it's not. Those with Galaxy aren't really being treated differently, they're being given different opportunities. Just like those with Facebook or Twitter accounts get access to some additional giveaways from time to time, to encourage people to engage with Gog on those platforms.
This isn't a step towards Gog introducing DRM, just like none of the other things people have complained about in the years I've been here have been. It's just Gog trying to improve their client (which while many of us hate or are indifferent to it, for many more being able to install and play games through a client is a deal breaker so it makes sense for Gog to have one) by offering an incentive to use it and stress test it.
Gog is a business. The only thing that sets them apart from Steam and makes them a viable alternative is the fact they are DRM free. As soon as they drop that they might as well cease to exist (and probably will) or just sell Steam keys like everyone else.
Gog are never going to drop DRM-Free. It is their niche, their one and only real selling point.

I stopped using the normal method after the client came out it also needs it for some multiplayer situations like dying light because i believe it runs off a server Hench it needs the client or we would be stuck in the stone age with games. The only thing i want is a download limiter so it doesn't hog up my bandwidth also I got Twitter for my gaming needs I never realized how many companies do giveaways on there as well streamers use that as well. Facebook is personally family/friends as well you don't have to use them but i use them for my advantage :D

Bad analogy. The difference is, you can't become (or "unbecome") female. A better one would be like the contest where you get a free game if you write a poem or draw a picture. In this case replace "draw a picture" with "use Galaxy".

richlind33: What is the value of "DRM-Free" if it doesn't mean no bloatware and no spyware? (and as a side note, personally I find it much worse than DRM; I don't mind mild forms of DRM, like one time registration, as much as I mind being forced to use a bloatware client like Steam and Galaxy).
b) Even if it was, as long as you can log in and download an installer without using Galaxy, then GOG are still offering the game "DRM-free".

hummer010: It's kind of discriminating against both Linux uses and Mac users. Worse for Mac users - the game being given away is actually available for Mac, but galaxy isn't.
Galaxy is very much available for OS X. The link to download the OS X version is hidden if you're not on OS X though (OS X users see the OS X download, everyone else see the Windows download).HunchBluntley

The client is optional as long as you can buy, download and play the games without it. Not getting a freebie that's being given away for the very purpose of testing the client is not making the client mandatory. You can just ignore the damn thing and go about your day. Just like buying enough games to get the thre free ones is not mandatory, and you're not being "punished" by not getting the free games if you haven't bought enough on the sale.

HunchBluntley: Actually, on the Galaxy info page, one can click to switch between the Windows & OS X versions by clicking the underlined name of the other OS in the small text underneath the "Download beta" and "Discover our vision" buttons. The function to display the download button is roughly like:
If OS X, show OS X download - else show Windows download.
While the Switch OS button works like:
If Windows, show "switch to OS X" button.
If OS X, show "switch to Windows" button.
