ErekoseDM: may i?
(i have an ouya)
jcosmocohen: Absolutely! I'm so glad someone could use it. Enjoy!
(What do you think of the Ouya, if you don't mind me asking?)
the ouya had a fatal flaw where you *NEED* to enter a credit card number when i first got it. it wouldn't even boot up and let you get and try the free games / demos without a credit card.
so my first impression was i like the feel of the controller but this little snag with the credit card system instantly put me off. especially after the hacks on psn and m$ where they got account info or whatever. in addition to target and all these other 'secure' locations where they give away your CC info due to lax security.
so i vowed to never give my CC info.
found a workaround after a week. using 'test' CC numbers to get me past the 'authentication' part.
(NO not stolen CC or fraud bs. just a dummy account essentially for testing purposes built into the CC systems)
Ouya dragged their feet on getting paypal added into their systems (if they even bothered to add it yet. i think you can finally buy value cards for Ouya in target or something as well) because they wanted to push for CC info to 'accidentally' buy tons of garbage. (like those fish games where the little kids kill the fish and can 'resurrect' it for $100) not to break the immersion or make you get up from the coach. id rather have to get up and have a shred more security to my finances.
the wireless was kinda poor initially. im 1 room away from the wireless access point. i had to tip the Ouya unit on its side so the powerbutton (top) is aimed at where the wireless access point is at to get the signal / not have drops. its probably the housing they used on the unit since it doubles as a heat sink.
if i had a long enough cord id go wired with it.
and there is ALWAYS a new FORCED firmware update. >_<
the controller feels nice. but the touchpad portion is one notch above piss poor. multi-touch would be non-existent. if i had to use it regularly in a game it would be the killer of the enjoyment. it is decent for about 1 click.
i read loads of people had sticking buttons due to lazy designs, but either i got a good one or havent used the controller enough to get the issues.
i wanted it for the xbmc to view video files. naturally they decided this wasnt worth having working initially even though it was touted in the pitch. even the first few versions of XBMC were lacking.
games wise its a bit of a mixed bag.
any games that are good are generally waaaay overpriced.
(cyclic problem of the funding and paypal not existing issue)(supposedly paypal is available or was about to be available.... i got bored of waiting, and dont see the option on the menus but maybe its on the website (hopefully).
many of the free or cheap ones are sometimes kinda broken. a few gems around though.
i however did get to play 'ittle Dew on it pretty early on, and that was pretty awesome.
there was also a gun game that was free that was pretty good that had some cover options.
played Organ Trail on it, and that made me snag it for PC as soon as possible.
Fist of Awesome was a good romp for a few mins.
100 Rogues finally showed up on Ouya and that one was pretty good.
all the emulator options are great as well. but my modded Wii does it better, with a better controller, and i can access my data easily though the SD card.
had the ever fixed the payment options i would have gotten Final Fantasy III. had it on ipod but the bigger screen would have been great. they dragged their feet so long its a moot point, ill get FF3 for something that would run on the 3ds or wait for it to show up on VitaTV/ PSTv when it gets to America.
just double checked the OuyaStore and they seem to have a good influx of games since i last booted up (that look worth playing / dabbling with)
Ouya would be great for Multiplayer or a party for sure. small size to fit in a bag and take over to a friends place.
can pair ps3 controllers. Ouya d-pad and buttons work well for me, and i like the metal and the feel of the controller. almost as good a feel as the n64 controller.
Ouya would be worth it at $40 maybe if you have friends over oft. not sure what they are flogging them for in store.
so all in all
(What do you think of the Ouya, if you don't mind me asking?) :
i have a love hate relationship with it.
thanks for Broken Age! ^_^
