for those not in the know
a group of fans have overhauled the morrowind engine to allow it to run much more better as a whole
and on modern operating systems
there are window
mac os
and linux versions
https://openmw.org/en/

you do however need to own the game
base game will do to run the game

so far it runs fine
and i instaleld several mods
but im not sure if the new engine pikcs up the expansion packs

installing this http://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/36945/?
to see if it plays nicely with open mw

edit : it doesnt
it does look most impressive on its own though

Thanks for the heads up on that. Would be the first mod I'd look at installing.

Mgso is a collection of mods. It basically morrowind code patch, mge XE, graphic and sound mods.

The graphic mods are compatible with openmw
The others are not. Code patch alter original morrowind exe. This exe is replaced by openmw. Mge XE alter direct 3d rendering, along with additional functions like script extender and distant land. It doesn't work with openmw. Sound mods usually broken when playing on Linux using wine so I don't know much about it
noooo you dont say
believe it or not not everybody runs linux or is interested in linux
so they might have you know missed that thread or glossed over it cause they arent interested in linux

its a bit of arse to install though
you need to have the goty edition
you need to have bloodmoon and tribunal installed
as well at the latest patch
you need to have direct x 9
.net 2
.net 4
and
visual c++ 2008
installed

worse of all though is that at various points during the installtion it disables your interface or just takes over to make automatic adjustments in the game
when it runs it looks most impressive

its just the installation that is a bit annoying

As someone already said, "Morrowind Overhaul - Sounds And Graphics" is not completely compatible with OpenMW. If you simply want the best graphics on Windows, just install the Overhaul and not OpenMW, at least for now.

I agree that the installation of the Morrowind Overhaul is horrible but it is a large mod compilation with opional files, after all.

You could take a look at the sticky threads in the game forum: https://www.gog.com/forum/elder_scrolls_series

I recommend installing fixed official plug-ins: http://download.fliggerty.com/download--1079
and these fixes:
Solstheim Rumor fix - fixes the broken Rumor topic http://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/40060
Delayed DB Attack V2 http://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/14891
Morrowind Overhaul fixes http://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/42149

and checking out these mods:

Tamriel Rebuilt (only partially completed) http://www.tamriel-rebuilt.org
Morrowind Rebirth (you can't use 3D grass and animated NPCs from the Morrowind Overhaul, Rebirth has its own animated NPCs) http://www.moddb.com/mods/morrowind-rebirth

Edit: I feel like Bethesda. I post my messages in an incomplete and broken state.

At least you didn't try to charge us for the modification you made to your post though.

Thanks for the info! I didn't know of this either.
Alright, I've opened it.. now what?

I see what you did there.

I thought I should mention it: the name of the engine is really OpenMW not Open Morrowind. Open Morrowind is a far better title for the thread than OpenMW, though.
