It’s similar to systemd vs. SysV or many other such choices: a regular end user should not have to care about that.

I suspect most of Linux users don’t know if they are running X11 or Wayland, and do not suffer from this lack of knowledge in any way.

Well I understand there is program compatibility issues, that's why I think it's called X-wayland exists and why the slow transition to Wayland.

But I think I've heard something about compatibility issues with Nivisia and Wayland, at least in the past?

Last I tried out Wayland, half a year (ish) ago, I certainly had compatibility issues on my 1060 equipped desktop.

But I've never had much desire to spend any time trouble shooting, as X11 has always been a dependable fallback and its feature set and design has so far been a better fit for my needs than Wayland has.

As long as X11 is fully supported by applications, my Linux boxes will almost certainly stay on that.
