cose_vecchie: Maybe Soldat?

The style is definitely the same, but no, sadly not the game I am looking for.

The-Business: Is it Lead Soldier?
Sadly no.

paulrainer: sounds like ikari warriors
Not that one either.

DanishPsychoBoy: I am looking for a 16/32-bit styled game, and I think that at least one person on here, other than me, must have played it.
It is drop-down shooter, where you are part of a military unit consisting of 4-5 guys, you get parachuted into the landscape, and then you just make your way down, killing enemies. You can pick up different weapons, by smashing crates, and if you go out of the game (instead of pausing) your character will desert, and it cuts to an animation of him, being chased by other soldiers, if you die, it will tell you how many enemies you killed, whilst showing you a funeral march/parade.

BreOl72: Sounds alot like "Airborne Ranger" to me:

Maybe some more info that could help, the game that I am searching for was never released on consoles (at least to my knowledge), it is from some time in the 2000's, and I think it was a free indie title.
Seeing as, according to the topic title, you *can* remember the name of the game, why don't you post it?

It was a typo, I didn't notice it until someone pointed it out, a few hours after the post had been uploaded.
Ha, I vaguely remember a game for the Amiga, which would fit the description. You were able to play it with 4 players, using some adaptor to split the joystick ports of the Amiga 500. But I forgot the name! :-D

From what I can remember it wasn't released on console, it was a free indie game from some time in the 2000's, from what I can remember.

Hey, the Amiga 500 was no console!!
And you wrote that it was a 16/32 Bit computer game. The Amiga 500 was a 16 Bit Homecomputer.

Don't worry about it, your comment was in good intentions. :-)
The military funeral while showing the score reminds of something that i've played on a mega drive, i can't really remember much since it was only one time but it doesn't fit the description since i think it was an helicopter game (not desert/jungle because the death scenes of those are different) and it was a coffin with the american flag on top of it.

If you search Google images for 'top down games military'. Do you see some familiar screenshots then? :)
If it is post-2000, it might be rather tricky to find something on.

You mention your character deserting if you left the game without pausing? Does that mean alt-tabbing out? Or if you quit the game without saving? It might give a hint.

When I read that bit I immediately thought of an old Amiga game, which was a sidescrolling platformer deal, but which had your characters able to go MIA (Missing in Action) instead of just KIA (Killed In Action). If the game actually saved when you started a level and would in fact consider your character a deserter if you quit before reaching a save, that sounds unique enough to narrow down the search scope a whole lot.

Even today, saving you starting a session so it can do something if you don't actually finish it is rather rare.
