I thought my porridge tasted rather odd.

It was a bit nutty.

I love GOG, Steam has so much crap nowadays, you can barely find the good games buried under them.

You'll get over this feeling once you have a game that is not updated anymore even though the devs are sending their patches to gog, like it's the case with Sots: The Pit.

bredy12: Ok you're right. Steam is probably the best. I still like GOG though. I see great possibilities.

Only one way to find out, ask him if he likes VN's or rpg maker games.

bredy12: I have a 3 year old steam account, a raptr, an origin, a humble bundle, and there are probably more that are slipping my mind. Now all I have to say about GOG is that I can see them surpassing them all just because of the community voting feature. The community will always be happy because they directly take the most upvoted additions and add them. This makes the community a major part of the expansion of this site. Steam just adds what gives them money and EA just buys popular titles. GOG was made for the community so as long as scumbags don't find this site then GOG will be epic.

Wishbone: While it's great that you're happy with GOG, I'm afraid it isn't all as rose-tinted as you make it seem. Yes, GOG is great, especially compared to many other services, but...

For one thing, they don't "directly take the most upvoted additions and add them". This isn't because they don't want to, but it's more complicated than that. They can't sell a game without having a license from whoever owns the rights to said game, and some publishers just aren't interested in GOG, probably because of its DRM free nature. Other publishers may be interested, but it can take years to negotiate a deal with them. So it's not quite as easy as "adding whatever gets upvoted the most". The community wishlist is still an important tool for GOG, and helps them to know which games are likely to be received well here.

As for scumbags not finding this site, I'm afraid that's too late. Much too late. It's a sad fact of the internet that scumbags are everywhere, and GOG is no exception. It's still the best community I've seen anywhere online, but scumbag-free it is not.
I suppose the community is still pretty good as internet communities go. It was just so much better back in the "Good Old Games" days. I suppose they needed to branch out to survive, but I still really miss that.
Also: what, exactly, is "a raptr"?
avatar
bredy12: Yea but its still better than Steam
avatar
Wishbone: I think Steam perfectly exemplifies what happens when it really is just a matter of voting for a game in order to automatically have it released there, just look at Greenlight. The amount of crappy shovelware made by complete amateurs is appaling.
I still can't fathom how some of that stuff gets through. Bad games are one thing, asset flips and completely broken garbage are quite another.

Yeah, it's actually kind of weird how many feathers are getting ruffled by the idea that "GOG is pretty great." Maybe the DRM-free mindshare isn't quite as united as they appear :P
I really like gog.com, good customer service and good curation. DRM-free and great selection. Good prices and great value. Classics that work on our new systems.

Haven't you noticed? You're cool and smart if you voice clever critique about GOG.
It's one of the quirks of our community here and the quirks are one thing that I find interesting with this place. :)
