I know this isn't on GOG, but it's a good old game regardless. I'm posting here because the gamers here are awesome and the boards are quasi-active concerning an old game like this. I'm about to boot up this game and play it for the first time.

My main questions are, since this game seems to have a ton of content and ways to play through the game, what should I be keeping in mind the first time through?

Alignment- is there any major pro/con to choosing one alignment over the other? Most importantly, any permanently missable content by choosing a particular alignment?

Characters- any permanently missable characters in the game in any way at all? If so, which ones are they and when do the choices come into play?

Anything else also that I should know going in. There are so many dense FAQs, and I want a few broad overall tips before just diving in, then regretting something and having to restart. My goal is to have not quite a "perfect" game file but just a really great solid first experience, without missing the cool stuff.

I've played Ogre Battle since owning it on the SNES and it's been my favorite video game ever since. I randomly decided to pick it up again just the other day so it's an exciting coincidence to see it mentioned here (I don't frequent these forums). While, I've played the game a lot and looked through a handful of FAQs over the years, I still end up forgetting a lot of the details. If you want to enjoy this game for as long as I have, I would suggest you do your first playthrough blind. It can be a rabbit hole of wonder, and it's just so much fun to go nuts with your own strategies and build Units based on the characters you like with no idea what they will become next. Once you read the guide and understand the mechanics, you might feel discouraged to use certain characters because you know how they min/max in the end, and you find out some truths about the balance of the game that might damper some of your experience. If I haven't convinced you to go blind by now, I can shed a little light on Alignment and characters below as best as I can, but you'd be better off reading an FAQ for more details.

In a nutshell, Alignment will ultimately determine what Advance Classes your character can become. As a really rough example, once you Level your Fighter to the appropriate Level (I think it might be Level 3 or 5, don't recall exactly) you will be given an opportunity to advance to the next Class. If your Alignment is high you may be given the option to become a Knight. If it's low, then you may be given the option to become a Beast Man instead. I do not recall if your choice of Alignment can cause you to miss content, but I don't believe so.

There are characters in the game where you will be given a one-time only chance to recruit, and the stipulations vary. It's always map specific, and I believe other contributing factors can involve: liberating a place with a specific Character in the Unit, liberating a place with a specific item, answering a Yes/No question in a specific way, finding a hidden area, and possibly the time of day.

Unfortunately, even though my information may require a fact-check, I hope I at least got you in the right direction, without ruining too much for you. Enjoy!

Actually, Tactics Ogre is a Super Famicom (Japanese version of SNES) game that was ported to the PS1, and is more like Final Fantasy Tactics than Ogre Battle. The PSP version, to my understanding, completely changed the mechanics.

I *think* that the Neo-Geo Pocket Color got an Ogre Battle game.

The GBA Tactics Ogre is the same type of game as the SNES/PS1/PSP game, though it is a different game, with completely different story and maps. One unusual characteristic of that game is that permanent stat up items are so common (enemies regularly drop them in random battles even early game) that it sometimes makes sense to sell them for money. Also, something interesting happens if you name a female character Deneb (I think that's the name) and turn her into a witch, though the result may ruin game balance if you use her.

The N64 game is most like the original Ogre Battle. In the tutorial, you get to control Deneb. (Deneb seems to be a recurring character in the series, though sometimes as an easter egg. I believe she appears for real in the original Ogre Battle.)

This had to be my fav game on the Super NES (or maybe the NES)...I loved it. It's been way too long since I played it, so I can't really offer any real advice, other than enjoy the heck out of it! I do remember looking on Ebay for a copy to play on my old PS2, but it was ridiculous, what prices they were going for. Anyway, your thread title brought a big smile to my face, because after Zelda, that game hooked me for life into gaming XD
