Thanks for bearing with us in this thread. We’d like to announce that today we’ve introduced the addition of new installers, with implemented GOG Galaxy client.

Like Destro described it back in May, we decided to separate the „new" and „classic” installers, for your choice. So if you don’t care about the features like achievements or cloud-saves and don’t want to use GOG Galaxy, you can download the „Classic Game Installer", just like it was handled before. For games that have new installers, the default download view on „My account” will show the "GOG Galaxy Game Installers" - you will notice that, as it is visibly described in „My account” game view. To download the „classic” ones, just go to „Options" and choose „Classic Installers”.

The new GOG Galaxy Game Installers were added to +100 games - a selection of all games that make use of GOG Galaxy features. I'll post the current list of games with the new installers in a separate post.
Going forward, all new games that will use GOG Galaxy features, will now receive both GOG Galaxy Game Installer and Classic Game Installer.

Introduction of GOG Galaxy Game Installers doesn’t change anything in terms of keeping the Classic Game Installers up to date. As soon as we receive an update for any game, we will prepare an updated version of the classic installer, just like it was done in the past.

Edit: Pinned.

fables22: As for the option being opted in as default - after careful consideration, we've decided to go with this because we believe that it's easier for an experienced user to uncheck the box than it would be for a new user to figure out how to turn the feature on.
Why do you assume most new users WANT to turn on galaxy?

Those that do want to use galaxy should do so by choice - because they chose to download it.
The rest of us shouldn't be punished by having to be extra careful and remember to untick the galaxy box every time, or else have to uninstall something we never wanted on our machines.

It's much easier (and makes so much more sense) to make the default option unticked.

The advantage GOG has (had?) over steam, was that we can just install games to our desktop and play them WITHOUT having to bother with annoying clients. Why take away that advantage by becoming another steam-clone?

Lemon_Curry: I'm sorry but I seriously question the extent to which Steam has been able to entice pirates into using their client and paying for the games.
You can question it sure, I'm just telling you want I've heard from self admitted former pirates. Tis all I can do. Even Gabe says that, and with gamers also saying it, it seems to be at-least somewhat true.

HunchBluntley: Ironically, I'm actually glad that DOSBox and redists are included redundantly in the relevant installers, since they're needed to play the games that they're included with...
And since GOG has fiddled with the settings for each individual game.

This really got to me this time. It may just be par for the course for current GOG, but I had a rather terrible day and this just finished me tonight. I can't stop thinking about it and it's just getting me more and more down. So thanks for that.

I came to the site for the old games working nicely on newer systems. I stayed for the nicely packaged installers and great community. Now I'm convinced I will leave because of bullshit moves like this one. You may still backtrack from this, and I may put up with this one, but if I stay it will be the next one. Because there will be a next one. And I don't know if I want to stay around to feel like this once again.

And to think I was excited about the galaxy "universal" cloud saves. I even installed the thing. Fuck.
Oh ye I forgot one thing in my post.

It kinda runs counter to your "tryna get it in" efforts but it would be nice and I think it would go a long way to assuaging the negative reaction if you had the checkbox have a persistent nature. so, I clicks it once, it's clicked for me always on that machine or that account.

This feels like a bad idea.

users who deliberately selected a "client free" game download now download the client as well, taking up more storage space and bandwith. Additionally they have more work, as they have to tick off the selection before installing.

users who deliberately installed galaxy don't have any benefits, either.

users who don't know about clients and gog galaxy and stuff install something they don't know about, how is that going to help them?

So what does do exactly, that makes our lives better and save us time?
I don't get it...

The change only seems to annoy. It feels a lot like when Microsoft was trying to coerce Win7/8.x users into "upgrading" to Win10 with the constant GWX nagware & trickery. Ok, so not quite as bad as that, but getting pretty close IMO...
Very tasteless joke in coming (Joke, not being serious here. :P )

Moves like this make me wish Richard Kuklinski's family stayed in poland. :P

I can already imagine the fun when this is put into games that never will get a update in its lifetime say for example

-> downloads dangerous dave pack
-> installs fast only to find galaxy installed as well for what gog ? to update a old game that never has any update ?

So i download my offline installers because i want my games backed up without that damn client....

So imma gonna add that client to your installer :D

I use Galaxy but i don't want galaxy in my installer. ESPECIALLY WHEN GALAXY INSTALL is default.

What next Bing taskbar ?

Any day now Gaben will back that shit up by ditching DRM, I suppose. o.O

I'm usually quite impartial to these things. Ok, installers bundled with Galaxy, possibly an increase in size - bad news, but in the end I can live with it. Something to untick every time I install a game from GOG - bad news, but in the end I can live with it.

GOG starting to act like a digital distribution outfit which I'd normally avoid - gotta say this is worrying. I understand that perhaps the rate of adoption for Galaxy might not be up to the level GOG management wants it to be, but this should already send a clear signal - pulling this opt-out behavioral economics stunt in order to get an increased client usage and promoting it as a "convenience"/"hassle-free" feature for new & inexperienced users... feels very un-GOG like, at least unlike the GOG I've signed up for years ago.

Times change and you've got to survive and grow, I get that GOG, but if I were you I'd build up on my strong points, not act like I'm trying to get in league with the big bad boys. You might not have noticed but most of your die hard users are refugees from all the usual gaming industry bull that's being flung around today.

What a terrible idea, soon I won't find any advantage to buy here instead of Steam.

I think they would actually prefer not having any DRM, but then would be in the same position as GOG is now. They do it to keep publishers happy, not because they fully agree with it. Thankfully that tide has begun to turn in recent years.
