Thanks for bearing with us in this thread. We’d like to announce that today we’ve introduced the addition of new installers, with implemented GOG Galaxy client.

Like Destro described it back in May, we decided to separate the „new" and „classic” installers, for your choice. So if you don’t care about the features like achievements or cloud-saves and don’t want to use GOG Galaxy, you can download the „Classic Game Installer", just like it was handled before. For games that have new installers, the default download view on „My account” will show the "GOG Galaxy Game Installers" - you will notice that, as it is visibly described in „My account” game view. To download the „classic” ones, just go to „Options" and choose „Classic Installers”.

The new GOG Galaxy Game Installers were added to +100 games - a selection of all games that make use of GOG Galaxy features. I'll post the current list of games with the new installers in a separate post.
Going forward, all new games that will use GOG Galaxy features, will now receive both GOG Galaxy Game Installer and Classic Game Installer.

Introduction of GOG Galaxy Game Installers doesn’t change anything in terms of keeping the Classic Game Installers up to date. As soon as we receive an update for any game, we will prepare an updated version of the classic installer, just like it was done in the past.

Edit: Pinned.

MaGo72: With all the numerous alternative suggestions that have been made in this thread and in some other threads, it is easy to see that the move to "advertise" Galaxy and provide a "convenient" way for users not very "savvy" in using/installing software as announced by GOG is more than just missing the target.

What makes me wonder, is the given premise really the reason for the move to put Galaxy into the offline installers?

Galaxy is the future and focus of GOG.com. Galaxy left Beta and they are desperate to get it installed and used as much as possible.
I know that they will leave offline installers alone.
There must of been some confusion between what GoG stands for and what Adam Kicin'ski and his stock holding friends try to aspire to.

None the less money does corrupt, it's wise to reminisce what got you to this point (:

Freedom of choice; is after all their motto.

Ghorpm: Sounds like a reasonable solution. I'm completely fine with it :) I like word "classic" a lot - otherwise I wouldn't be here ;)
avatar
F4LL0UT: Is that so... hey, I have this deal for you, I call it Great Deal Classic! You give me all your money and I'm gonna send you a gift code for Jack Keane 2! How can you possibly say "no" to that kind of classic deal? Eh? Eh?
Not classic enough for my taste ;) Sorry

I doubt we'll hear from them more on the matter regardless of what weekday it is.

EDIT: Apparently I was wrong.

And stupid.

I am shame.

paladin181: I just feel more and more that GOG is not a true professional company willing to spend money equivalent to their growth. THey caught lightning in a bottle and ran with it, and when things began to grow out of their previous size, they think they can continue to do business as before, just with a few more people.

The real problem is that with growth comes change. And once you reach a certain threshhold, there are expectations of competency that didn't exist before. A broken feature here and there stood up ok to 5000 users. 100,000 users however create a load that requires different structuring of the code. This different structuring was added piecemeal without regards to how a changed bit of code here and there changes the code dependencies around it, and more things are broken, which are again patched piecemeal.

Another company would have realized this by now and perhaps rewritten the entirety of the site by now, but GOG hasn't shifted their paradigm yet, they're still thinking small, managing small on a big scale. It just doesn't work.

You have to adjust with your scale, and every model has a limit to the amount of size it can support. It feels like GOG's current business model is exceeded by their customer base and their desired client and vendor base. They need to learn how to think bigger instead of thinking small and magnifying that.
And not making use of telecommuting is not helping either.

Destro: 2. As mentioned earlier, we will work on making the GOG Galaxy installer smaller, but at the cost of it being online only.
avatar
djdarko: This needs some clarification.

Will Galaxy be operable offline, or will the installer require online because it's only a stub?
Let me rephrase what I was trying to say: the new smaller installer of GOG Galaxy will require online connection to download its components.

Executer: I present, the best outcome:
ITS A PRANK BRO, JUST A PRANK
Now one houndred comments will elaborate why a Online installer for Galaxy in a OFFLINE installer is a stupid idea.
Not the absolute worst possible.. but pretty close.

Will it include actual games files or will it be a web type installer in which Galaxy is downloaded and the game is automatically downloaded in Galaxy?

So basically can you install the game without Galaxy and have an option to opt out of Galaxy in these new installers? I was just wondering how close it is to the original idea.

I know you said it's required to be online to download Galaxy components, but is it mandatory to download those components. That's what I'm getting at.

Either way, I realize you can still use the classic installers... so it's doesn't matter I guess, I'm just curious.

Nothing changed about the "new" installers - they are standalone, backupable, offline working game installers, with option to disable GOG Galaxy installation if needed. Once we minimise GOG Galaxy size footprint on the said installers, installation of GOG Galaxy as a part of this flow will require online connection, but lack of it should be handled gracefully and not affect game installation at all.

Howdy Destro, how are you? :)

Anyway, I think some screens even beta alpha or whatever would come in handy in this case. Can you clarify a bit more? Box checking and unchecking, file sizes, examples etc etc.
Honestly I'm a bit confused, dude! ;)

Thanks a ton and keep up the good work!

Thanks that's what I wanted to know... I didn't personally mind the original idea, just didn't agree with how they were implemented for everyone else. IE: the size issue and being opt-out instead of opt-in.

But these are still more than usable for backup purposes then which is now clear, so good to know...

Seems to be still checked by default, but will eventually use a web installer to install Galaxy as an option (that you can opt out of) instead of bundling it. So slightly better than original idea if I am interpreting that correctly.

V4V: Many of those issues are decisions by the games' developers or publishers. Why do you blame GOG for them?

"Abandoned" games are a modern myth in most, if not all cases. Copyrights usually don't just vanish with the companies holding them, they are sold to or inherited by other companies like all the other assets.

I concur about the forums, though. Removing the infamous rating system would be the very least, followed by moderation worthy of the name. And still, you buy here from time to time. And still, you read and post in these forums. If I lose my trust in a vendor, I just leave. What keeps you here?

I also wish for an update notification. In the meantime, a comparatively easy way to check for updates is to go to your games list after logging in and change "MY COLLECTION" at the left side right above the games list to "UPDATED". There you see the recently updated games. But keep in mind that they seem to be removed from that list if you go to their download page, so either don't do that or download the updates right away.

In addition to that, I have made it a habit to check a game for updates when I am about to install it from my local storage.

edit: wording, typo
This only works if GOG lists the games as updated. Around half of game updates done are quiet updates; either the game doesn't take the updated flag or the particular update for the games that do register updates doesn't trip the flag. Either way you get more silent updates than you know.

morrowslant: Right now the only GOG installers guaranteed not to have GOG Galaxy files in them are ironically Linux installer files.
GOG hasn't managed to figure out a Linux Galaxy client yet, so any/all Linux installer packages will be clean.

Downside to this:
Not all GOG games have Linux installers. Witcher 3 is a prime example.
Right now Witcher 3 is a wasted purchase for me.
You are right, and you are not the only one.

In addition, GOG has many titles with no Linux installers, where Steam or HumbleBundle (DRMfree) provide those.

This is why I purchased for example LIMBO on HB instead.
Very very sad.

Means I can remove my Galaxy-stance avatar..
For good!
