More modern games of this type sometimes have an in-game hint system, like "The little Acre" and such.

A long long time ago, when dinosaurs roamed the streets and played early video games, you couln't just go online to look for hints or even a playthrough (sure there were e.g. hint books that you could buy or help lines you could call, but those were usually available only for US customers, especially the hint lines).
In a way it was quite fascinating because either you figured out the puzzles yourself, or you heard from your friend, who was playing the same game, how some puzzle could be solved. Maybe partly because of that, puzzle adventure games made more sense, and it was more exciting to hear your friend figuring out the puzzle that you both had tried to solve at the same time, almost as exciting as figuring it out yourself.

When my uncle and I first played Monkey Island, DotT, etc, I was years away from my first internet. But as far as I remember we had game magazines with the solutions to the games. I still have the solution for Alone In The Dark here somewhere :)
I think my uncle actually solved Monkey Island by himself first by opening the EXE file with an editor and looking for text that could help :D
