ET3D: Interesting idea, to count average days between purchases. So on average 5 days between purchases for me this year. If I include other content purchases (books, comics, P&P RPG, audiobooks, music, ...) it's about double that. Looks like I'm consistent: in 2014 I also had a purchase every 5 days on average. So I'm not any better but not any worse.
Consistency is the road to success, they say. But the purpose of therapy is to improve - if you want to improve, that is.
I think you know too many of those indiegalagogo etc sites, maybe you can reduce the amount of stuff you buy by sticking to just GOG (they didn't pay me to say that) and perhaps one additional site for your Android tablet gaming. I'm trying to keep my wishlist confined to GOG and Steam (for the stuff that isn't here) and limit both lists to 10 entries max.
I occasionally have these weird moments were I'm thinking about erasing my wishlists completely and uninstalling all my games but then I'll probably get nostalgia and come back due to a strange "unfinished business" feeling. Knowing full well that I won't miss anything if I never play anything again. The notion that I can somehow play all the must-play games I need to have experienced and then quit for good is equally nonsensical since I know that this is a never-ending undertaking.
I'm obviously not going to uncover the mysteries of Life by collecting eggs with a yellow chicken character in Toki Tori so what am I getting out of this? Fun alone isn't a truly satisfying reason for me to do anything. There needs to be some purpose, That's probably why gaming can't be my hobby anymore, because even though I still love games I can't go back to the time when unadulterated fun was enough of a reason to invest considerable amounts of time into something without judging it as pointless.
Fantasysci5: I think my buying is about once a week, when the sales hit. I think it's as much of a hobby for me to look to see what games are on sale and add games that look cool to my wishlist, than to actually play them...I'm addicted. :(
Ah, a new patient...I mean, group member. Welcome, Fantasysci5!
It's a mini dopamine rush, instant gratification. Reminds me of playing grocery store as a kid, where we would buy and sell miniature plastic vegetables and fruit etc to each other with toy money.
Shopping for games on sale isn't as harmless as it might seem even if you can easily afford it because when the brain gets a feeling of reward from such non-constructive activity, it can cut into the motivation to do something which is actually rewarding but takes more effort. In other words, we become more lazy. Needless to say, this is bad.
Maybe I will uninstall all my games now as well as Steam and my GOG...wait, I didn't actually install anything for GOG. It's just a website, I can't uninstall that. There is no escape!
