TodaysLoneWolf: Now using GOG Galaxy, those former Steam-based purchasing habits have surfaced again, though I'm making it a habit to actually invest more time to COMPLETE the games despite having so few free hours.
Well done. That's the important part.

avatar
TodaysLoneWolf: I assume it's reasonable to pick up games on sale now to play later as it saves money in the long run
It only saves money if you play them in a reasonable time frame. If you don't play them at all, then it's a net loss. If you play them after several years, then there's a chance they will drop in price further. Doesn't always happen, but if your completion rate is very low (as mine is), I think it ends up better to just hold off buying more. Wish I could manage that. :)
The purchases just keep coming. Humble Bundle Leading Ladies 2 entry level tier.
I'm also going to buy Groupees' Bundle in A Box 5, once M.H.X's Chronicles - Infinite Ocean is unlocked. Sounds to me (based on some YouTube listening) like an album that's worth buying for $1. It will add some games to my backlog though.
Groupees reduced the bonus requirements for this, so I bought it. Glad I didn't pay more, because I'm not enjoying the album that much. Oh, well, I guess adding some games to my backlog is a bit of consolation.

Ah, well, if it's not collecting games it's collecting game dev tools. $12 went to the Humble Game Making Bundle. Which also adds a few games to the backlog, just for good measure.

ET3D: …$12 went to the Humble Game Making Bundle.
At least some of that sum will support a good cause beyond the buying-games-habit!

I'm currently resisting the Dark Souls deals on HumbeBundle. I can't even play the DS games on my computer but I'm really interested in the DS2 DLC stuff since I played the base game on PS3. This is a case of buying just for the sake of buying in case I may potentially upgrade my PC in one of the coming days (which is most definitely not going to happen) so I can play the game later and not have to buy it in a more expensive state. Which is ridiculous.

I've been really interested in buying a WiiU lately as well just because I want to play Wind Waker....

Nevertheless I have to get either a current-gen console or upgrade my PC soon because otherwise I'll probably cave in and buy games I can't play anyway. Too many interesting ones are coming this year so I think I might as well be allowed to enjoy them beyond the kick of the intial purchase.

DISCLAIMER: These words were written in a state of tiredness and may not make sense grammar-, spelling-, or structurewise.
It's been over a month since my last GOG purchase.

YEEEEEEEEHAW!!!!!
Today i was tempted twice, Lords of Xulima here on gog and the humble kickstarter bundle (that includes LoX) but was saved by the thought of all the other games that i still have to pass and my lack of patient to play games with this heat wave...

YEEEEEEEEHAW!!!!!
Congratulations, well done, well done indeed.

I've been clean for 28 days, that's the longest I've managed since joining GOG in November 2013. My previous record is 26 days. In two days I'll reach the one month clean goal as well, and then I'll try to stay clean for the rest of July if possible. Can't be too proud of this newest achievement though as the big "summer sale failure" is still too recent. It's easy to be clean for a while after a big sale. The next true test will be the fall sale but I doubt I'll buy as much as in the summer sale.

Had a close call with Panzer Corps going on sale on Steam for $10 earlier this week but was saved due to my gift purchasing rule.
Had to add 2 of the newly released Warhammer games to my GOG wishlist but since they're not on sale there is no risk of me buying them right now.

Out of all my wishlisted games, the only ones that would strongly tempt me right now are Telepath Tactics, Galactic Battlegrounds Saga and maybe Escape Goat 2, other then that I can hold out just fine - or so I believe.

It's 26°C right now here in Switzerland at midnight - too warm to sleep and too warm to play difficult demanding brainiac puzzle games or strategy games that require lots of focus. I'm playing Broken Sword 2 right now, casual enough for these temperatures.

My record is 27, one day sly of you. Today when I play Red Alert 3 and find that I have some units missing when compare to the wiki...... that lead me to buy the expansion for a complete experience.

:( should have not play this game....

I didn't even realise there was a new weekly. I already have AR-K, so I will pass.

I bought Lifeline on Android a few days back.

You mean you did buy the expansion just now? If so, it does reset your "clean timer" to zero but it does -not- reset your total efforts so far to zero. It's the overall improvement that counts. Two steps forward, one step back is still one step forward. For an addict of your epic magnitude, 27 days clean is already a big achievement.

Last year, I bought a game every two days (slightly more, actually) and this year I've only been buying one game every 10 days on average so that's an improvement by a factor of 5.
Even if I should relapse again in the coming days and have to reset the counter to zero, I'm still doing 5 times better than last year. In that regard, I hope you won't see your latest fail as weighing too heavily on your conscience.

Doing all these simple calculations really helps, at least I think it works for me. I already figured out how to save money by buying everything twice, a claim most would laugh off as silly and illogical if I didn't have the numbers to back it up.

I bought Goat Simulator on Google Play. Unfortunately it doesn't include the MMO simulator, which was the part I was more interested in. Still, I'll keep it and hope they add it some time.

Interesting idea, to count average days between purchases. So on average 5 days between purchases for me this year. If I include other content purchases (books, comics, P&P RPG, audiobooks, music, ...) it's about double that. Looks like I'm consistent: in 2014 I also had a game purchase every 5 days on average. So I'm not any better but not any worse.

I think my buying is about once a week, when the sales hit. I think it's as much of a hobby for me to look to see what games are on sale and add games that look cool to my wishlist, than to actually play them...I'm addicted. :(

Consistency is the road to success, they say. But the purpose of therapy is to improve - if you want to improve, that is.
I think you know too many of those indiegalagogo etc sites, maybe you can reduce the amount of stuff you buy by sticking to just GOG (they didn't pay me to say that) and perhaps one additional site for your Android tablet gaming. I'm trying to keep my wishlist confined to GOG and Steam (for the stuff that isn't here) and limit both lists to 10 entries max.

I occasionally have these weird moments were I'm thinking about erasing my wishlists completely and uninstalling all my games but then I'll probably get nostalgia and come back due to a strange "unfinished business" feeling. Knowing full well that I won't miss anything if I never play anything again. The notion that I can somehow play all the must-play games I need to have experienced and then quit for good is equally nonsensical since I know that this is a never-ending undertaking.

I'm obviously not going to uncover the mysteries of Life by collecting eggs with a yellow chicken character in Toki Tori so what am I getting out of this? Fun alone isn't a truly satisfying reason for me to do anything. There needs to be some purpose, That's probably why gaming can't be my hobby anymore, because even though I still love games I can't go back to the time when unadulterated fun was enough of a reason to invest considerable amounts of time into something without judging it as pointless.

Ah, a new patient...I mean, group member. Welcome, Fantasysci5!

It's a mini dopamine rush, instant gratification. Reminds me of playing grocery store as a kid, where we would buy and sell miniature plastic vegetables and fruit etc to each other with toy money.
Shopping for games on sale isn't as harmless as it might seem even if you can easily afford it because when the brain gets a feeling of reward from such non-constructive activity, it can cut into the motivation to do something which is actually rewarding but takes more effort. In other words, we become more lazy. Needless to say, this is bad.

Maybe I will uninstall all my games now as well as Steam and my GOG...wait, I didn't actually install anything for GOG. It's just a website, I can't uninstall that. There is no escape!

I'm on a good path i guess. I managed to resist getting Lords of Xulima which is on my wishlist. I also skipped Groupees BM21. Thus i managed to stay 'clean' this week. Heck i even resisted getting Alien: Isolation (though that one because i'd rather wait for a GOTY version). My new strategy is that i don't buy even strongly wishlisted stuff before it's 75% off, if it's a great game or 80%, if it's something i plan on playing someday. And bundles only if it has at least 2 non-owned games that i plan to play someday. My addiction otherwise threatened to get out of control. I've already spent this year more on games than the entire last year.

Thanks for the heads up that it's live. :) Moebius is on my wish list, so I'm not sure whether to feel sad that I did pre-order for $2 or be happy that I don't have yet another game I won't play any time soon.

That's a good question. In theory I want to improve, but in practice I mainly care about cherry picking stuff instead of just blindly buying. I enjoy checking out a large number of gaming outlets and learning what's available and then trying to not purchase everything. :) Of course, I still buy too much, so it would be good to buy less.

As I said before, there are quite a few benefits to any pastime. Content consumption can be quite stimulating, especially if you view it with a critical eye (that is, you try to understand what's good and bad about the game or book or movie). Still, it's not my place to convince you of that. I feel lucky that I can still enjoy fun for its own sake.
