I've tried everything i've seen on the web...admin rights , run as admin gog and the game , but no matter what i try the game wont save my progress .
I changed the "read only" file to not read only but as soon as i apply the change and then OK it and shut the file then take a look again it's back saying "Read only" , i know this is a Windows 10 issue but nothing changes the fact i cant make saves !
Any help and advice is greatly saught , i really want to play this game after having played Skyrim on Steam, this is the first game ive purchased on gog.

Download the installer files to your machine. Don't use galaxy, just download the files direct from the website. Install these files by clicking the exe, it will open a screen which will have options button, select that (it might be called settings). You can now stipulate a path to install the game to. Select something outside windows folders, e.g. C:/mygames
Let the install run and the game should appear in that folder, you can then run the game directly from the created shortcut or from the exe in the install location.
First rule of windows club, never install anything to windows folders (like program files)
Also, if you have any issues, first test would be to close galaxy and run the game from the install directory.

So first thing to do is Unistall the game from gog?
Then download the game from the website ??? which website ? ( i'm new to gog )
After i have Installed to a Folder of my chosing and want to play the game will gog open or does it bypass it completly ? Will i lose any benifits if so by not using gog to play my game ?

I would download the offline install files first, but yes, uninstall the non-working version.

On the GOG's website, move the mouse over your account name on the top of the page and select "GAMES", then click the game you wish to download to get access to the download links. Now you need to check under the links if the files include the Galaxy client or not, if they do, press "MORE" and select "CLASSIC INSTALLERS". Now you can download the files and then proceed to install the game.

The offline installer may still create a shortcut on the desktop that tries to launch Galaxy if it is still installed, so you may need to go to the game's installation folder and figure out what is the correct executable for launching the game manually.

If you don't launch the game from the Galaxy client, you will more than likely loose any client side benefits, but once you have gotten the game to launch manually, you can try to point the client to search the game from a given path and have it be added to the client and see if it finally agrees to launch within the client.

Now if you want to do things properly, always install games to a secondary computer, then copy them to a dedicated gaming partition on your primary gaming PC and figure out what registry keys may be needed to get the games working on that. Once that is done, you can add GOG games manually to the Galaxy client and let it handle the patching. For backups you can just archive the installation folders (where you of course have saved any required registry keys) and that's it, no need to ever install those games again, just copy the games or move the drive with them to another computer, merge the keys to the registry and after installing a dozen or more VCC++ libraries you can find out how many of those games no longer work thanks to the new GPU's driver lacking any support for features that they need...

Did as instructed but got the same result .
looked thru the download files and even though i Installed as advised thru Classic downlaods there are gog files in there and the game has reappeared in gog game list .
Think i give up. : ((

This doesn't seem like a Galaxy issue nor a GOG issue. You would probably have the same issue on Steam too. Looking around Google, have you tried this: A save file should have been automatically created for you not long after starting the game. Did that save? If so it points to the above being the issue.

Regardless of what others will tell you, I recommend a new GOG user sticks to using Galaxy as it is far simpler. If you want a full backup offline installer (like the ones on the site) you can download these via Galaxy too by going to your library -> Game -> MORE -> Backup & goodies.

I'm not sure why that requires not using Galaxy, you are just doing a re-download and wasting bandwidth. It's the same files no matter how you obtain them.

You can set where you're games are installed in Galaxy too and if you need to move them it's a simple as copying the files to the new location, uninstalling the old copy, and re-importing the game. Far quicker and less bandwidth being used.

I'm admittedly making an assumption that he hasn't got the installers backed up, so reinstalling would require a DL anyway. User seems not that tech savvy, and note that Galaxy is picking up his attempt to reinstall as well. If Galaxy is installed in Programs, then this could be causing the issue (and it may be defaulting his install to the Programs folder). Nuking Galaxy may allow him to get the game installed elsewhere and running on his rig. After that, we can help him to get Galaxy reinstalled in a fashion so that he won't have this issue again.

If Galaxy is closed and you launch the game from the exe file there is no difference and no need to uninstall Galaxy. All Galaxy is picking up on is the Galaxy related files that are included with the game. No offence but for a none techie person downloading bin files and making sure they are all in the same location is far from simple.

Also I just tested this. I have Oblivion installed via Galaxy using Windows 10 64-bit in Program Files (x86) with an admin account. Game launched and saved without issue.

So I suspect the issue isn't related to Galaxy at all nor it's location.

Okay, I really, really don't want to get into a back and forth with you on this. Suffice to say, the guy's using Galaxy and installed the game via Galaxy and it doesn't work. My instinct is, due to the issue he's reporting, that it has to do with the install location. I'm not blaming Galaxy, but if it's defaulting to installing the game to a location that's problematic, then he's best off not installing this particular game with Galaxy. He may inadvertently still be installing to a Galaxy defaulted location that's causing issues.

Again, not blaming Galaxy - I use it myself (although I never install my games via Galaxy).

And I would also suggest that DLing the installer files and having them all in the same place would be far simpler for the non-techie user than copying and moving the entire game to another location, as you suggested earlier (and is something I wouldn't recommend anyway, as that could cause more issues, depending on the game).

*edit* You may be onto something here. But this issue he's reporting has, the vast majority of the time, been caused by an install in Programs folders. I think it would be well worth his while to check if it works in a different location.

As soon as you hit install it ask you where you want to install it, so if he was to re-download it in order to move it to another location there is no real reason he can't do so via Galaxy. It's no harder that picking a new location when installing a offline installer. That's all I'm saying.

I'm not saying you are. Simply saying that we can quickly eliminate Galaxy as being the cause by launching the game from the exe file with Galaxy closed. If the game still won't save then it's not Galaxy causing it so why take the time to uninstall it then having to re-install it later if you want to use it?

It just seems like a lot of times the go to advise with any issue is to uninstall Galaxy because some people have there own reasons for not wanting people to use it... when we can clearly figure what is and isn't directly caused by Galaxy.

Possibly but if the user has a bandwidth cap or something like that, it would make more sense to do that. Not everyone can just re-download a game over and over, speaking from experience.

As long as you copy the files to a new location and uninstall the game in Galaxy this will not cause issues. The game will be re-installed using the downloaded files by using verify / repair which compares the games files to GOG's sever.

It sounds like what happened to me with Fallout 4, which is that for some reason the game doesn't have rights to save the game in the folder it wants to save it. This means you have to allow the game to write in its save folder.

If I recall right, Bethesda games save the games in My Documents user folder (c:\users\username\etc\bethesda). Go there and check if the folder is marked read-only. If this is the case allow writing in the folder as well.

A regards the save name one i have tried that and its not the issue .
I think it's and admin problem with the files as ive read several people with very simular problems on the web in steam and here in gog , more in particular with older games on Windows 10.
I recently started playing Tyranny on steam with no problems but when i fancied playing New Vegas , which was installed a couple years back and already completed a play thru i came across this same problem of games not saving , even tho all my old saves were still there , i could use them but not save anymore thereafter .
The main difference i see with Tyranny and the games i can't save to is the Game folders i cant save to are "read only"
I've been all over the web looking and trying various fixes but none have worked for me .
That's why ,to be honest ,i thought i would give Gog ago with Oblivion...but have run across the same issues ...it seems i'm doomed.
If i can fix this READ ONLY issue i'm sure i will be sorted .
