I've been considering getting it at some point (hopefully I can get it to run with wine), but I've read some people saying it was kind of a boring game. So how was the story ?

I think you can find Syberia good if you like games like Broken Sword. Story and places you visit are strange but are very beautiful. You should look screenshots, if you don't like this particular design, maybe you will not like the game.
But for me it was a really good travel, a good experience. I can't wait for the second! I need this :-)

Another thing you have to know: you must have Syberia AND Syberia 2 because the story isn't completed in the first game.
