Will there be weekly staff picks today, or will there be some big release today again?

You will have to wait for an hour to see. I think that GOG will want to have all the spotlight on W3 tomorrow so I predict no special release today - normal weekly pick. Although I could be wrong. :)

There will be a regular staff picks today as hinted by the twitch schedule . After all, there are some people who won't get/play W3 on day one so there should be "food" for them (me included)

Steam Summer Sale starts on the 11th, GOG usually starts a week earlier. Make of that what you will.

Does it? I thought it did, because of the winter sale, but I'm reasonably new here and heard other users say they usually run at the same time?

They may overlap at some point, but GOG usually begins their summer sale earlier than Steam.

If the GOG summer sale will start this week, I don't think it will start today. There's still an on-going Interplay weekend promo which will end tomorrow. So maybe tomorrow, we can see a sale.
