Ughhhhhh. That would be a dealbreaker all right.
Looks like the Switch is going to replace the WiiU, but I remember Nintendo's CEO saying that its not going to be a replacement, but "something different". Not really sure what to make of that statement.

Yeah, they said the same about the DS and the Gameboy... and look where that went.

I think that's just something they say, one to make sure the current console doesn't tank completely at the prospect of a replacement (though in this case Wii U is pretty much there already) and to keep us guessing a bit about what it is.
Dig that innovation.
Maybe they call it the "Switch" because you'll have to keep switching parts! XD

jk, jk

That actually makes a lot of sense. Thanks for bringing it up.

All I'm saying is that I hope it won't wind up like the last time someone tried to make an ARM-based gaming tablet that also did double duty as a TV console/home entertainment hub.
Or the last time someone tried to make an ARM based Game's console that specialized in bugger all else.

Seeing as my interest in this is actually at sane levels, I'm really not seeing how this is going to compete in...whatever realm it actually will be aimed at, especially if Nintendo does what they did for the 3DS and Wii-U, ignoring the lucrative application market. Realize if you will that neither were able to connect to a time server to update the time themselves. A basic function that's been on cellphones since before the NOKIA 5110.

It isn't going to be an easy sell to ask people to buy something that could cost as much as your common Android Tablet/Phone while offering none of the advantages and being bulky to boot. I really hope they aren't pushing local play as much as that (laughable) trailer implied.

And if the battery life is anything like, or worse than the devkit (3 HR), this thing is practically DOA.

It's crap, but I'm not sure that's such a big deal.

I don't think my 3DS lasts much longer than 3 hours straight playing, and my smartphone certainly wouldn't.
As long as you can charge it without the dock, i.e. a normal cable, I don't see that being a huge issue.

This is Nintendo, who has had you charging using special cables since the GBA SP.
i think that the switch will cost 499$ and 499€ (in Europe).

3 or 4 hours sounds real to me

timppu: "And then?"

Frankly to me this sounds a bit like Nokia announcing a new (Lumia?) phone. Their time has gone, everyone has moved on already. Kids are playing free-to-play games on their iOS and Android devices, not handheld (or console) Nintendodos. Or Nokia N-Gage for that matter.
I'm thinking along the same lines, but Pokémon Go got my hopes up for Nintendo a little. If Nintendo is willing to come further out of their comfort zone and release, say, an Advance Wars game for Android, people would buy it. Hell, they could just do remakes of old Pokémon games and those would sell like hot cakes. Even I might buy one.

They did that already though. Fire Red/Leaf Green [ which I missed out on :*( ], and Alpha Sapphire/Omega Ruby. Earlier this year they also released the original games on the 3DS Virtual Console.

On a side note, Pokémon Sun/Moon is coming out in a couple of weeks. Looks like 2016 is the year of Pokémon.

Well, it's the 20th anniversary. If there was one year to really go all out, it was this one.

Gotta say, I'm loving all the new memes about this thing.
